Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of earthy and piney hops with distinctive bitter notes. Taste is a mix between some piney hops with distinctive earthy notes and light dry caramel malt. Body is about average with good carbonation. Quite bitter and hoppy as advertised.

Thanks to my brother for sending me this bottle. This bottle was labeled as 1000 Ultramate, which is the same thing as the 1000 IBU Light.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma has a ton of floral hops in it, as well as some grass and biscuit notes. The flavor is quite strange but I - unlike several of the people I shared the bottle with - enjoyed. I get the same floral notes, as well as a little bit of leather, grass and assorted spices. There is also a high amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

I certainly consider myself to be a hop head - I absolutely love the tongue shredding bitterness offered by a 150IBU IIPA, however I am still quite weary of the contents of this little bottle!

Appearance: This is actually a pretty good looking APA. The body is lightly clouded and a peachy orange colour with tinges of red. A rough pour yields a massive off white head that lasts pretty well and leaves some thick patches of lace on the way down.

Smell: Hmmm, talk about a wolf in sheep's clothing! 1000 IBU smells like a standard, well hopped IPA. Tons of citrus (sweet orange and grapefruit), peach juice, light tropical fruits (pineapple and mango) and a ton of pine resin and pure hop cones.

Taste: The initial millisecond on the tongue yields a lovely sweet honey character as well as some sweeter citric notes. These flavours are however quickly forgotten as an immense wave of tongue shredding bitterness engulfs all in its path. This is easily the most bitter substance I have put in my mouth! After a few sips, some resinous notes and a grapefruit pith flavour are noted along with the bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Due to the immense bitterness, the mouthfeel is quite hard to evaluate! The body is actually very light and quite watery and the carbonation is of a moderate level and pleasantly smooth.

Overall: Is 1000 IBU bitter? Hell yes, it is easily the most bitter substance I have consumed, but it is far from undrinkable! Personally I actually enjoyed the intense bitterness and would drink this again. I think this is certainly a must try for anyone who considers themselves a hardcore hope head!

On a side note, I gave a sip to a friend of mine who has never tasted an IPA - his expression was priceless :D

Bottle split with Volcanicbeat bought at Blackhearts and Sparrows. From notes.

A - Poured hazy dark gold with a nice one finger beige head. OK lace and a half finger of retention.

S - Honey, dank hops. Lot's of citrus. Smells like the aroma you get from rubbing hop flowers in your hands.

T - Hop tea. Some honey. Just all aggressive, violent hops.

M - Really bitter. Like really, really bitter.

O/D - A neat experiment, but obviously too bitter to be enjoyable. A good bitterness is nice but this was mental. The most bitterness I've ever experienced. An amazing feat to have pulled off, just not what most people would look for. Curious to try the DIPA version as this would clearly provide more body and maltiness.

I honestly don't know how to rate this beer since the style is technically a Pale Ale, but to me it's more of an experiment in extreme bitterness. The beer is very light in body and color, yet packs an intense and lasting bitterness which could cause an inexperienced beer drinker to cough or gag with disgust. I enjoyed trying a sampler sized glass and maybe understand how one could acquire a taste for this beer, but mostly it was something you kind of laugh at and move on.

A - Pale golden hue with a thin yet dense white head. Lacing follows.

S - Piney, earthy hops and nothing but.

T - Wow. Some serious tongue ripping bitterness here. Grass and pine hop flavours.

M - Light bodied, moderate carbonation. Insane bitterness.

O - An unbalanced hop beast clearly catered for the fanatics. Happy to have tried it but once is enough for me.

Still on-tap at the Taphouse after the Takeover

Pours cloudy amber 1 finger head - Ok lacing.

Aromas of all hops, maybe a little lemon.

Taste follows aromas in a mouth-cleaner kind of fashion. its big and its pretty ugly in terms of a hop assault. One of the most bitter/astringent beers I have ever had. This was 'out-there' when compared to other Mikkeller beers at the take-over. When compared to Taphouse usual fare, it's just too much.

Mouthfeel is harsh.

Glad I only had a small sample.

Had on-tap at the Local Taphouse, Darlinghurst on 02/09/2011.

Dark bronze in the glass, head a very light brown colour - looks good. Strong hit of cascade-style hops on the nose, but pretty one-note. Taste OK but the bitterness just takes over and the hops flavours are still very one-note. Expecting some sweetness of fruit on the back palate given this is an IPA but it's just not there. I keep smacking my palate together to see if I can get something more, but that's it! I don't really object to the bitterness, more to the fact that it just dries you out. I can actually feel the bitterness in my stomach.

I wonder about the 1000 IBU claim, as even if Mikkeller did in theory get there they could so easily just say this when it's actually 300 IBU or whatever. Not as bad as I expected overall and it is great to see the style pushed to the limit as it helps you appreciate good rounded IPAs better! Be interested to try the higher alcohol version of this beer in the future.

Pours a light burnished bronze colour with lovely fluffy beige head, retains half a finger with beautiful lace. Looks lovely.

Woah, tangy. Feel like I've shoved a whole lime up my nose. So fruity and sour and tangy, just massive, massive acid on it. Too much; I'm overwhelmed.

Taste doesn't take long before completely puckering up. Nothing much, just massive bitterness, so much acid. Puckering lime, unripe grapefruit, just wormwood and some star anise all just side-effects of overdone, mad-scientist hop bittering. Maybe worth a sip, but not pleasant and there's no nuance to it at all.

Feels OK, just so much ashiness from the hops it's hard to enjoy.

More of an experiment than a beer and yet there's not technique involved. It would take a lot of skill to balance such an insane amount of hopping, and there's nothing here to grab hold of.

First beer I've had which I could legitimately call a palate wrecker. Fruity but mostly leafy nose and just massive bitterness on the palate. Lasts forever. Ruination eat your heart out.

I would love to drink this beer regularly. Overhopped and likely only hop-masochists will enjoy it.

Oh god. What a weird beer. It's a version of their 1000 IBU monster, brewed to only 4.9% ABV. It's a Double IPA without any body to support it. Had on-tap as part of the Local Taphouse Mikkeller Tap Takeover.

Pours a burnished, slightly haze orange-bronzey hue, with a very fine and full head of white foam. Pretty classy and static lacing. Looks good.

Nose is resiny and full, with big pickled orange characters and a sharp citric twang overall. It misses a lot of body and depth, but the sharpness is pleasant enough.

Taste is... Yeah, it's bitter. It's very solid, biting and astringent, and it really doesn't have a lot of body to balance it. It's sharp and direct and green and oh god it's bitter. It's a rather intense experience, and worse for not having any body to cushion it at all. Oh god. I think I'm going to die.

I'm aware that the human palate can't actually taste 1000 IBU, even if Mikkeller did manage to get it there, but they've certainly reached my limit with this anyway, and it's bare-boned and raw, with nothing at all to screen it. Probably the least drinkable beer I've ever had. But not the worst, by any means.
