Picked up a 220z bomber from Olive Tree Market for $8.49 and poured it into a Brouwerij ‘t Ij branded tulip glass.

A: Pours a fairly clean light honey-like hue that is slightly effervescent, with a decent ½” tan head that lingers a while leaving minor amounts of lacing in my glass.

S: A big dose of hop right off the bat – earthy, grassy citrus rind, followed quickly with a ton of booze that really knocks out the hoppiness, sweet crackery malt, fresh grain and interesting yeast with a bit of funk on it. Unfortunately I get a strange metallic smell (maybe oxidation from the cap???) – not sure what it is and it fortunately doesn’t come through in the flavor, but it’s not nice…..…and in an IPA that is already struggling in the hop department, the last thing this one needs is any more distractions.

T: Hop and booze upfront – not one flavor over the other, just a blast of both, and for a 7% IPA, I’m not really sure why. I’ve had many DIPA’s that hide the booze better than this one that range in the 8.5 - 10% ABV department.

Seems like brewer Borg Bjergsø went all in on the sweet caramel malt on this one to try and balance out the hot booze, and in his efforts pretty much wiped out the hop character completely.

M: Medium bodied and carbonated well for the style, finish is crisp and clean and the hop oils linger a while – really the best attribute of this beer.

Overall a really mediocre attempt at an IPA and especially one where the label claims “American IPA” – don’t kid yourself……..not even close! I usually really dig what this brewer has to offer, but this is barely average for the style and at nearly $10. a bottle – I really feel like I got ripped off. There are dozens of better IPA’s that come in at half the price – I could name at least 10 that are brewed in my home town of San Diego, but I’m not here to hype other labels, just warn people of this one. Save your money and buy 2 bottles of any other IPA from SD and get a proper buzz from a traditional IPA without feeling like you’ve been taken by a big name Euro brewery.

A: Hazy orange with an off white head.

S: Tangerine, pineapple in the nose. Smells delicious.

T: Tastes more like a pale ale, than an IPA, but that makes it all the more refreshing on a hot summer day, with pineapple and orange notes.

M: Medium bodied and smoothish.

O: A damn good IPA. Far better than the farmhouse version. Delicious!

A: into a tulip, perfect amber body, few fingers of off-white head left messy sheets of lace

S: lots of bold hops, floral and herbal over the sweet pale malts - suggestions of dry fields and tart yeasts amid the bright hops and fresh malts

T: malt body was a bitter/butterscotchy sweet, some caramel, maybe even peachiness; lots of bittering and toasty hops, seemed like a pretty good mix of citric and pine suggestions, as well as having an earthy, almost dank character

M: has a slight chew to it, nicely bittering and drying, medium-light body but initially full on the tongue, crisp and effervescent

O: an IPA I would have never bought if not for the Invasion Farmhouse IPA I loved (from Mikkeller). Outstanding IPA with a slight musky edge. Fans of the style, Belgian and American versions, should definitely give it a try.

A - Light haze. Nice, deep peach orange-brown. Fine white head settles low but has great retention once it gets there.

S - Sweet honey, thick malt, tangerine, white raisins, earthy wood, bitter florals.

T - Great woody hop flavor with a solid bitter backbone. Honey, mellon, and sweet tangerine keep things in balance. Bitters linger through a long, malty-sweet finish.

M - Sharp bitters cut through a thick and creamy mouthfeel.

O - Exceptionally bitter-forward flavor profile, even for the style.

Not bad at all. More malt coming through then most of the IPA I usually prefer, but I welcome change

A: Copper color, with a little head.

S: Not much to report here. The right smells were there.

T: Bitterness, hops, malt. Again, more malt then I normally expect. More yeast too, but I've come to expect that from European IPAs. Caramel, sweet bread, dried fruit type of flavors.

M: I would of liked it to have had cleaner feel. Thicker then most ales, but not syrupy /sticky like a doppelbocks.

O: My second brew from Mikkeller. I liked it. Will not buy this particular ale again, but will definitely continue to try more from the brewer.

If this beer was a metal band it would be Frightmare. Classic in style, but just enough unique. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PXQA77tEt8
