500ml bottle, with a simple, for Mikkeller, label, the only niggling detail being the mention of sugar in the expectedly basic ingredients list.

This beer pours a dark, shadowy abyss, broken only by a sliver of cherry cola basal highlights, with two beefy fingers of puffy, bubbly, thick chocolate milk head, which leaves a solid array of honeycomb lace around the glass as it evenly subsides. Seeexxxy!

It smells of bittersweet chalky baker's chocolate, waxy black licorice strands, lightly breaded caramel malt, a touch of more weighty toffee, coffee liqueur, ash, black musty fruit, some brighter citrus notes, and peppy leafy, herbal hops. The taste is lightly roasted caramel/toffee malt, dry mocha latte, a more muddled dark, fleshy fruitiness, laid-back herbal anise, soft orange vodka notes, and softly bitter leafy, earthy hops.

The carbonation is average, if a bit on the low side, the body medium-full in weight, and mostly smooth, a herbal liqueur edginess taking a small nip as its pound of flesh. It finishes on the sweet side, the chocolate, demure cafe au lait, and lingering bashed-up fruit running the table, until a final oneupmanship from the lingering bitter pine and citric hops.

A nicely boozy, in a restrained, say what? manner, chocolate and coffee on open display, and the hops, well the hops are everything you would expect for something with the 'American' prefix tacked on to the name - interfering, sure, but quite pleasingly so. The booze, on a final note, is not exactly low-key, but does its best to keep the damage to a minimum. Big, brash, and warm - a hug for when you didn't know you needed one.

Black/very dark brown pour, two finger light brown head. Really great retention, lots of tracing.
Rich porter smell: nice rich roasted malts, dark chocolate, macchiato coffee, with hints of smoke, licorice, dark fruit esters and a touch of green leafy hops.
Lots of juiciness in the initial sip, zesty and quite sour, mix of oranges, figs and plums, getting covered by heavily roasted malts, very dark cooking chocolate and strong grounded coffee beans. Licorice and anise. A short burst of citrusy hops in the finish bring a nice crisp feel, but it's rapidly pushed away by ashy, charcoal roast, with a hint of smoke too. Leafy and earthy hops in the aftertaste, with the lingering burnt malts and a touch of the dark fruitiness.
Creamy body with a low carbonation, nicely hidden alcohol, great balance of roasted malts and bitter hops from start to finish (and after).
Very drinkable and tasty porter, though some people would find the sourness off-putting. It worked for me though.

A - Beautiful looking porter. Deep cola pour into a solid black body. Creamy, light khaki cap of foam. Nice retention and ok lace.

S - Rye bread, dark bitter chocolate, molasses, almond, Nutella, touch of cold booze.

T - Smooth and roasty. Dark toast, dark chocolate truffles, bitter herbs, pumpernickel bread, toasted hazelnuts.

M - Medium body, spot on for the style. Smooth, creamy finish.

O - A great porter, one of the better examples of the style.

Thanks to Tauroe for sending this one down! Reviewed from notes. Poured from 16.9 oz. bottle into an Upland pint glass.

A: Very dark brown and opaque. Forms a thin tan creamy head and almost no visible carbonation.

S: Roasted malts, coffee, cacao, a bit creamy, and some sweet maltiness. There's elements here that remind me of amaretto as well.

T: Coffee, lactose creaminess, cacao, and a nutty (almonds? Or almost peanut butter?) flavor at the swallow. Creamy sweet with mild roasted bitterness in the hang.

M: Creamy, heavy body for style. Low carbonation sensation, and alcohol very well-hidden.

O: Wow - this was really pretty damn pleasant. Mikkeller beers are often hit or miss; but this was a hit for sure. Tasty.
