2011 bottle opened in 2013

A - Bowling ball black with dark muddy highlights. Creamy milk chocolate head with ok retention and lace. Classic Mikkeller.

S - Holy crap. Ancho chilies, peat smoke, milk chocolate, molasses, salt, warm scotch, touch of oak, and mission figs. Nice complexity and great integration.

T - Dry dark chocolate, fresh oak, salt, raisiny chipotle peppers, pumpernickel bread, touch of smoke, cocoa nibs, sharp ginger, dusty char.

M - Milky, medium body. Nice dry, lingering finish.

O - Drinking great 2 years after bottling. While not a heat bomb, the chili pepper plays a starring role in an extremely well balanced profile.

Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Pitch black pour with a one finger, creamy, tan head with decent retention and lacing. Roasty, smokey nose with hints of dark chocolate, espresso, booze, and just a subtle touch of chili. The taste follows suit with lots of cocoa, dark chocolate, and roasted malt. As expected, the flavor from the Speyside barrels is much smokier than with the bourbon barrel version. As it warms, the chipotles begin to emerge and make for an enjoyable combination with the peat from the barrels. The mouthfeel is a bit thin and chalky with a subtle warming finish. Overall, it's a step down from the Bourbon BA version and it lacks depth, but is still a solid Porter.

Another lovely Christmas present from my lovely wife, who intentionally seeks out odd, obscure bottles that I might never quite have gotten to. European green bottle of 12.7 ounces, split with said wife.

Pour is black black; no leakage around the edges, & a quick-collapsing head. After a suitable period to warm, nose is sharp peppers, warm chocolate, & a smoke from a distant fire. There are worse things than these three. Nice.

Texas Range Chipotle Porter aged in Speyside Barrels sounds like an aggressive little bastard, but he ain't. The chiles push to the forefront of the tastes, but they are quiet, & balanced out by mild chocolates & sleepy sweetness. Mid-section is moderately smokey, sliding into a close of peat. The chiles make themselves known further south, as my stomach begins to warm. That warning might limit my consumption of this beer.

With the promised smoke & whiskey & peppers, I was hoping for a triple high off the wall, but this is more balanced than blast. Good.

Odd 12.7 oz. undated green bottle with a dark mahogany label with the standard Mikkeller bearded man, but with a cowboy hat on his head. In front of him are 2 red hot peppers making an X. Right below the peppers is the ABV%, the Government warning, and the only description of the beer. It's aged in Speyside Whiskey barrels. There is a back label, but it's useless unless you're a shop owner. That's where the barcode is. This beer is too special for an ordinary pint glass. Snooze! I decided to pour this barrel aged beer into a Cycle Brewing snifter.

Well, it looks like a barrel aged Porter to me. It's as thick as molasses and as black as an all black cat at midnight. Holding this beer up into the light is not a good thing. It's so thick and black that light will just bounce off it. It might blind you if you're not careful. On top was a fluffy 3/4 of an inch dark tan almost coffee colored head of foam. It had good retention that left behind some rings around the beer and only a streak or two of lace. Loved the color!

The aroma was just as nice and dark as the color of this beer. The first aroma that came to me was the sweet scent of whiskey. It wasn't an overpowered boozy whiskey aroma. It was just right! Directly behind the whiskey was the dark roasted malt, roasted coffee beans, and the bitter dark chocolate. After the roasted elements had their time in the sun, in comes the sweet caramel, molasses, a few raisins, a plum or two, and then it finishes up with a subtle spiciness. Wonderful and complex! Nothing overshadowed anything. Everything had the same amount of time to shine.

Instead of the whiskey starting off, the roasted elements started off the taste. That consisted of the dark roasted malt and the dark roasted coffee beans. After that is when the whiskey stepped in. Again, it wasn't boozy or overpowering. Just right! Directly after the whiskey was a short lived sweetness. That consisted of dark chocolate, caramel, molasses, and a little black cherry and raisin. This beer then finished up with a nice spicy punch. It wasn't so spicy that I needed a glass of water next to me to extinguish the fire in my mouth. Great taste! I got plenty of roasted flavors, whiskey flavor, and even a little peppery spice.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied and full of flavor. The aftertaste had plenty of roasted malt, roasted coffee beans, whiskey, raisins, caramel, and more spiciness. The spiciness left some heat behind. Not so much that it ruined it. It was just right.

I honestly thought this was going to be a novelty beer. It wasn't! It was a nice roasted spicy beer with enough whiskey flavor to keep you coming back for more. Like every other Mikkeller beer, it's on the pricey side. Is it worth it? This one is.

A - Dark black with a hint of brown and a thin finger of frothy khaki-chocolate colored head. Fades fairly quickly.

S - Sweet dark chocolate malts, oak, vanilla, whiskey, chipotle, roasted coffee, black licorice, bit of molasses, some booze.

T - Sweet dark chocolate malts, bit of milk chocolate, vanilla, oak, Whiskey lightly spicy chipotle peppers, roasted coffee, black licorice, molasses, and a bit of booze.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a spicy, warming, and sweet finish.

D - Nice spicy porter. The chipotle adds some nice heat and the barrel adds some nice complexity.

A: thin dark brown head on a jet black body with nice lacing.

S: scotch, oak, roasted malt, vanilla, sweet toffee and butter.

T: scotch and oak up front moving to chocolate, smokiness and mesquite flavors finishing with more scotch whiskey, vanilla and chiles. Nice transition between flavors.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation

Overall: this one was a lot more drinkable than I was expecting. nicely complex, a lot of flavors that mingle surprisingly well.

A - Pours with a small head of light brown foam on top of an opaque, black body. The head settles fairly quickly and leaves decent lace on the glass.

S - A rich, complex aroma of chocolate, peanut butter, whiskey, smoke, vanilla, wood, leather, and so much more.

T - Thick, dark malt up front with some brown sugar, molasses, and smoke. Spicy whiskey notes with a touch of cinnamon in the middle. Finishes with dark chocolate, smoke, nutty caramel, vanilla, and lingering chili sweetness with just a touch of spice in the back of the throat.

M - Medium thick body, moderately high carbonation, and a sweet, but balanced finish.

D - This is a weird beer, but it works so unbelievably well! The whiskey barrel works perfectly with the chili and all of it is supported and enhanced by the base beer. Well balanced, extremely complex and really, really good. This is probably the best mikkelller beer I have had to date.

extraordinary! i a a sucker for all of the mikkeller beers, they are so creative and i get excited to try every new one i see. you always know you are in for a trip. this one is wonderful. it pours a luxuriuos black color, smooth as butter, and with a short mocha colored head that fades out rather quickly. the smell is very alcoholic, cant believe this is only 6.6% abv. smells like about 10%. theres just the smallest hint of peppery heat, but theres tons of roast on the malt, a good dollop of dark chocolate, and an earthy peaty intensity from the barrel. the flavor has all the same characters, but they come in different orders and proportions. first the chocolate, then the boozy, and the speyside whiskey meshes with the chipotle only in the finish, which is long and a little sweet. there is so much going on in this beer, i wish i bought two. i hate to admit it was worth the 14 bucks i paid for a small one, but it is. its got a full full full body, with only enough carbonation to keep it moving. i was left wanting more of this. absolutely worth checking out if you like clever porters. also the barrel has added something special to this, not like any whiskey barrel brew ive ever tasted.

A: Pours dark black with a slight caramel head

S: Spicy sweetness and hot alcohol aroma

T: Very slight residual whiskey flavor. Taste is a lot like the smell. Kind of left open ended and seems to be missing something to round it out. Finish is was an odd bitterness and a charred wood character.

M: Medium-heavy mouthfeel that seems to sit a little heavier than it might need to

O: I was hoping a little more from this. The flavor it distinct...but maybe not in the best way.

The pour is black in color with a tan head. Aroma isn't very good. Green apple, paint thinner, and alcohol. Some roasted malt and maybe a bit of dark chocolate. Really quite abrasive. The flavor is a touch better than the nose, luckily. Green apple, chocolate, roast, alcohol, and maybe just a hint of whiskey. There's a weird chlorine flavor to it, too. I don't really get any of the peppers. Too bad as the regular version was quite good.

Basically jet black in colour, tan head with some lace on the glass. Smell has a lot of oak and whisky notes with a huge roasted malt presence lurking behind it, burnt and a bit smokey as well, dont get too much pepper in the nose but it is there. Taste has more heat from the pepper, whisky and oak, deeply roasted malt and some chocolate as well. Medium carbonation, med-full body, good feel. This was really good, lots of interesting flavours here and it all works really well.

Black with a brown head. Great retention and lacing. Dark fruity notes in the nose, light oak and whiskey character. Some dark chocolate. Tastes like a sweet chocolatey and lightly roasty porter. Some oak and whiskey, chipotle heat way into the finish. Quite good, but not as much heat (burn) as the original. Very drinkable however.

A: Pours a very dark brown, almost black with a 2finger mocha looking head. Decent retention and lacing.

S: Smells of oak and chipotle.

T: Chipolte oak up front, some whiskey and roasted malts in the middle with a bit of heat on at the end.

M: Medium to full body with medium carbonation.

O: Defiantly a interesting beer. Complex but to me it's missing the backbone. The underlying beer, a porter.

330mL bottle poured into tulip

Pours an opaque browned color with some dark, almost black hues. Topped with a one-finger high layer of lightly tanned head, leaving a slick of film across the brew. Not much lacing.

The barrel is a bit lighter than I thought it might be, but still delivers a spike of whiskey heat up front. Touches of chocolate and nuttiness with coffee beans and some roasted notes. Faint notion of spice with a little bit of vanilla.

A little sweet and warm up front with plenty of roasted malts. Nutty with coffee and chocolate notes underneath. Slightly boozy, although not over powering, coupled with a few hits of smoke. The peppers come in towards the back end, and mesh fairly well with the whiskey barrel character. Finishes a warm and boozy.

Fuller medium body, decent carbonation, a bit sticky and chewy on the tongue. This was decent - I was actually expecting something completely out of control, considering who the brewer is, but I found the chipotle and whiskey presence slightly subdued.

Poured from the bottle into my Hunahpu's glass.

Appearance: Pours an opaque dark brown with some red at the edges when the light hits the beer. There is a half finger of thick, tan head that fades quickly to a ring around the glass.

Smell: Roasty, smokey, and sweet. Full of dark fruit notes. There is a note of heat from the peppers.

Taste: Roasty up front and then the heat builds. It isn't a dominating heat, just enough to make sure you know it's there. There is a whiskey flavor as well as some oak from the barrels. The finish is roasty and bitter with some more heat.

Mouthfeel: The body is a touch on the watery side with fluffy carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: The flavor was a bit muddled. I think I preferred the non barrel aged version of this beer. I don't think I'd spend the money on another bottle.

A: Opaque black, 1/2 inch cappucino head, sticks well to the glass.

N: A deep, deep breath of baker's chocolate. A little bit of smoke and some of the peppers. The honey and butterscotch of the Speyside show up slightly. This is mostly one dimensional chocolate, though.

T: Chocolate and espresso as par for the course. I get some smoke from the chilies I'm guessing here, as I've never noticed Speyside to be particularly smokey, at least if we're talking Aberlour or MaCallan and some research partially backs me up, but more to the point, I don't get a lot of whisky character out of this. In fact, if given this blind, I wouldn't have guessed Speyside, but there's enough oak/woodiness here to get at some barrel aged character. Additionally, the chipotle is here, but it's subdued until the beer warms. When it does arrive, it adds a slight acidity.

M: Coating and pretty much right on the mark for a porter. Neither too heavy or too light, and as such, I won't mark it down.

Overall: Drinks pretty well, and it has some good dimension. However, it's primarily a balanced pepper beer with some very minor whisky overtones. Nothing to complain about, and I would certainly have again. I'd be really interested to try this next to Black Butte XXIII.

Side note: For anyone who really cares, this pairs fantastically with Sriracha Rooster Sauce. In fact, I'd have to say if you can drink it with a burger or some Asian food slathered in Sriracha, you'll enjoy this beer quite a bit more.

A- pours jet black with a two finger dark brown head. Looks amazing

S- nice aroma of spice from the peppers, and I'm getting a decent bit of the whiskey as well

T- the finish gives me a slight peppery burn, while the oaky whiskey flavor is what starts off...I'm actually not getting any "porter" characteristics, though

M- this is actually pretty damn thick...very viscous!

O- it really doesn't have any of the coffee or chocolate notes you'd expect from a porter....but the heat from the chiles is there and not overwhelming, and the whiskey barrel isn't offensively strong either. Great beer

Half inch dark mocha head on a dark down body. Well above average head retention, nice lacing as well.

Cocoa and slight chipotle pepper heat in the nose

Not getting a lot of barrel notes, more of the peppers although not overwhelmingly so. Chocolate. Very drinkable.

Creamy mouthfeel. Low but adequate carbonation.

Overall I really liked this one a lot. Different enough to make me want to have it again but not off the wall tithe point where it's just confusing. Thanks TATURBO.

Appearance: Pours out a simple-looking, black body with a smallish, dark tan head.

Smell: Moderately roasty, smoky aroma staked by reserved notes of chipotle peppers, peat-smelling Speyside whiskey, chocolate, and caramel.

Taste: Essentially roasted malts with a fair amount of upfront sweetness and a touch of semi-sweet chocolate chunks. Heat from the added peppers begins slinking in, building on the tongue. Noted smoke element contributed by the malts as well as the chipotles. Little hints of sea salt caramel, vanilla, earthy peat. Dry finish with some lingering pepper heat.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: I thought it was alright. Yep, just alright.

375ml bottle.

This beer pours a solid oily black, with very shy caramel edges, and one fat finger of dense foamy milk chocolate brown head, which wicks away at due pace, leaving a rainforest treetop vista of lace around the glass.

It smells of sharp, chalky chocolate, bready caramel malt, and some spicy vegetal pepper notes. The taste is more clipped, dry cocoa, a subtle lactic sourness, that gets well overshadowed by a growing smoky pepper edge, which also dims any burgeoning hops that may have been. Lost mostly is the Speyside barrel influence, again, I blame those frisky chipotles.

The carbonation is fairly mild, but not without a purpose, the body an unsteady medium weight, showing some thin cracks at points, and the sticky heat makes it tough going for better marks at smoothness. It finishes quite dry - the chocolate and sneaky peppers in charge.

A pretty decent porter, if a bit light - but one that is well differentiated by the simmering pepper warmth. Good stuff.

The viscosity of its opaque black body surprised me as I poured it out of the bottle. At 6.6%, I didn't expect it to look so beastly. A finger's worth of tan coloured head falls almost as fast as it rises. Thin legs of lace spread themselves horizontally across the glass.

The deep, rich, and gooey qualities of the dark chocolate brownies that form the core of the nose are somehow accentuated by soft minty/pine and grapefruit flesh derived from the American hops. Smooth vanilla and oak undertones become more pronounced as the beer warms and pair perfectly with its chocolatey dessert-like goodness. With a few quick whiffs I can pick up the chipotle as well, which plays off of the delicate smokey background. The smokey/sweet whisky scent becomes increasingly pronounced as it reaches room temperature. This is one of the most complex porters I have ever put to my nose. I hope this carries into the taste.

Chipotle, encased in a soft smokey layer, cuts across the center of the palate and flicks it at the back. The more sips I take the more the spiciness becomes amplified, but only in small increments. Rich dark chocolate dances around all sides of the mouth. Vanilla and oak carry their same smoothness in the taste and show up as the beer nears its finish.

Judging from how it poured alone, I expected the body to be more plump. It may sound strange but my initial impression as the beer hits my lips tells me that this is barrel aged. Soft, delicate, and almost oily is how I would describe the feeling. Medium bodied and well rounded but it's just a tad too thin for all of the flavour it packs.

I look at the beers Mikkeller produces as some of the most interesting and innovative beers I've ever encountered. A porter aged in Speyside whisky barrels and brewed with chipotle chili; that was an immediate sell for me. The only other beer I've had brewed with any sort of pepper was Great Divide's Chocolate Yeti, and I can say that I enjoyed the slightly spicy character in this porter much more than I did in the Yeti. It's there and it helps to bring the chocolate out more but it's tamed and balanced and doesn't interfere with anything else that's going on, even at the end of the bottle. I enjoyed every drop of this. With a bit more body I'd say this would make for a world class porter.

Poured into a snifter. This one was quite pricey at $12.

4.5 A: Black color. Three fingers of medium brown, frothy/creamy head. Retention is very good and a healthy sized ring of lacing is left behind.

4.5 S: I love me some chilis and this beer has the chipotles way up in the forefront. After that there's ample chocolate. The whiskey isn't very strong. If I hadn't read the label, I probably wouldn't have even detected it. Supple roastiness and maybe a touch of oak and caramel. I don't think I'd be this impressed if the chipotles weren't done perfectly.

3.5 T: The flavors don't mesh nearly as well in the taste. Foremost, the whiskey seems to be a bit off as it gives out a leathery tanginess that I don't quite care for. Too much peat as well. The chilis are done very well again though. They add a great flavor while being reserved with the heat. The chocolate and roastiness are congruent with the peppers. Moderately powerful smokiness. I think if I got a hold of the regular version, I'd like it better.

3.0 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Could use some more creaminess. Tannic astringency on finish.

3.5 D: This was a tasty beer, but I think it's mostly due to the peppers. The barrel aging did not improve this beer and I feel confident saying that without having had the original.

Poured into my Mikkeller Mugshot Tulip Glass.

Appearance: the Speyside barrel aged Texas Ranger (Chipotle Porter) is really dark; much more so than your standard porter and with a nice mocha colored head that settles into a thin wisp.

Smell: some spiciness in the nose (not over the top), smoked malt, chocolate malt, and a touch of scotch whiskey.

Taste: .. yeah this beer is definitely brewed with smoke dried jalapeno peppers. The chipotle chili doesn't bamboozle the palate, yet is easily detectable on all sides of the tongue. One the other hand, the Speyside barrel seems to be a little gun-shy. Oh well, maybe it's for the better. There's a nice roasty and chocolatey character to this beer, but it finishes bitter and dry.

Mouthfeel: perhaps a bit to thin. Though maybe I should cut it some slack because it is a porter after all (though it looks like an imperial stout).

Overall: a nice barrel aged porter to be sure, but for $13.49 a bottle I'm not sure it's worth buying again.

A shes pretty dark right out of the bottle, massive mocha head falls to a finger of dense foam leaving just a partial ring of lace

S candied cherry come at me right away with some milk chocolate, campfire, molasses, and smokey peat, reminds me of a cherry colt paired with some scotch

T more of a smokey chocolate liqueur flavor then the nose, more peaty smoke and less cherry, just a little booze and cayenne pepper

M the peppers slowly warm your mouth but its pretty mellow, creamy from the bubbles and a long roasted aftertaste

O well suited for a chilly evening with a interesting mix from the warming chilly, smokey peat and a solid porter

I might grab one to drink next winter, pretty mellow now but a year or two couldn't hurt its cause, great stuff grab one if you see it

T: Roasted malts, some dark chocolate. Don't really notice the peppers. Maybe hint of smoke? Not as great as I was hoping, but still nice.

M: Surprisingly, disappointingly thin. Almost watery. But faintly creamy.

O: I like it, I'm pretty sure, but the mouthfeel is so sad it makes me question that. Worth trying, but I won't seek out another.
