Mikkeller Happy Lovin' Christmas IPA brewed with ginger and pine needles

Appearance: light orange, some good lacing, and medium-large head.

Smell: hops, slight yeast, and a citrusy pine aroma.

Taste: hops, pine, light ginger, and a very slight citrus.

Mouthfeel: medium with a bitter finish.

Overall:
This is a good brew. The flavors mesh well and create a nice bouquet. It is really more of a normal IPA than anything else. (431 characters)

Pours into a stemmed glass a clear medium golden with a full two finger egg shell colored white head that sticks to the glass like glue, nice carbonation to the body,a great pour.As great as the pour was the aromas are lacking,I pick up some mild floral and tropical fruits and not much else really.A nice smooth feel with no real sharpness.Flavors are leafy and herbal in the hop department, not a citric/pine bomb by any means,I like the fact it's not overly sweet but I want more hops!An up and down beer for me,the hops are a little subdued but so is the sweetness, not bad. (575 characters)

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is full of lemons and oranges, with some biscuit malt and some perfume notes thrown in. The flavor is similar, with a lot of orange and lemon notes, as well as some biscuit malt to balance out the bitterness and keep it pretty low. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation. (373 characters)

Teku glass. Bottle. Amber/orange like with thin to medium, semi-densed, white head, which dissapears fast. Poor lacing. Aroma of caramel and little toasty, in the background maybe honey. Hops aroma is not so noticable mainly some rasin and floral aroma. The taste in the beginning sweet and mild, but quickly it comes with medium bitterness. It becomes most intensed in the middle of degustation with nice hoppy aftertaste. Light to medium body, thin texture, medium carbonation. Finish is bitter and dry. In overall solid IPA, little bit too mild because. It could be nicer if the aroma is more intense. (604 characters)

1st beer to taste from my new Rare Beer club membership! IPA brewed with Ginger and Pine Needles. Poured from bottle into Brooklyn snifter glass. Pours a murky yellow color, really nice cloudy white head, great retention and lacing. Looks awesome. Smell- tropical sweet fruits like mango, pine (no surprise here), just a great smelling IPA. Taste- nice hoppy bitterness and piney resin, followed by a nice sweet tropical fruit malt. This is a really nice IPA. Maybe the best IPA from Mikkeller I have had. (505 characters)

330ml bottle. It's technically December now, so Christmas beer it is!

This beer pours a mostly clear, medium golden yellow hue, with two fingers of tightly foamy, somewhat creamy off-white head, which leaves a decent array of specked painted lace around the glass as it slowly abates.

It smells of pineapple, orange cream, aged grapefruit flesh, a bit of sugary caramel malt, and that pine tree you just dragged up the stairs, to the 'special' corner in the living room. The taste is bitter tropical fruit, kind of a mash-up between pineapple rind and grapefruit pith, velvety pine needles, like when you first unzip the tent on a cool mountain morning, a sturdy caramel/toffee malt backbone, and some tame sugary alcohol warming.

The carbonation is a bit crackling at first, but settles down soon enough, the body a wavering medium weight, and smooth, but with a hoppy ride-along, which really isn't all that supportive in that regard. It finishes mostly sweet, the rather saccharine malt carrying the day, even with the lingering pine and citrus notes.

A nice, beginner's DIPA, with a more than slight Christmas forest essence. Drinkable, right alongside the rum and eggnog, for a more boreal seasonal experience. (1,219 characters)

Aromatic and Substantive hoppiness buffered by spice particularly ginger. Bitterness from pine needles. I am well near spice tasted-out, and so the drinkability is just Ok. Still a decent and complex beer. Above average mouthfeel. Foamy head and lace. (251 characters)

On-tap at Spuyten Duyvil. I'll admit I usually favor DIPAs that are all hops, but this is a well-crafted DIPA that makes the most of its barley. The hops are big, but a little old school in the sense that it's classic American grapefruit-citrus hops without super bright juice or floral notes. It sort of tastes like a stronger SN Celebration Ale. The malts bring a smooth, slightly bready taste, which by my palate put this closer to an American barleywine than any other style. It's a little thick for the strength, but it's also nice to have a sip-worthy beer that doesn't knock you out with alcohol after a second glass. Check it out if you can. (649 characters)

Poured from a 750 ml bomber into a tulip- pours a hazy golden orange color with two fingers of bubbly off-white head with good retention and a few splotches of lacing.

Smell is very piney, with some ginger notes and a hint of citrus (of the naval orange variety).

Taste is consistent with the smell- more ginger than pine however. Starts of with ginger, goes to crisp pine flavor and bitterness, then to more ginger and orange flavor to finish. Interesting.

Mouthfeel is very smooth- silky almost. Medium body, very little carbonation. This is an interesting beer; glad I picked it up. I won't get it again but it was worth trying. If you're in the mood for ginger and hops (and you happen to be in MA), get Jack's Abby's "Ginger n Juice". (744 characters)
