Bottle poured into a tulip glass. A cloudy lemon drop yellow with around three inches of foamy white head. Aroma is an interesting combination of sun-ripe pineapple, tropical flavored gummy candy, lemon rind, sourdough bread, horse blanket, and something between vinegar and cat urine (Brettanomyces can do some funky stuff). Palate is similarly tart and funky, although I am finding the brett to be rather tasteful, flavorsome yet not overpowering although this element does build over the course of 11.2 oz. Awesome juxtaposition of grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon hops and the aforementioned barnyard funk, fizzy and effervescent with a hint of butter in the otherwise dry and bitter finish. A little pine sap emerges as well. I'd describe this as a technically proficient, mid-range sour with decent hop character. If I had to critique, I'd say this one is somehow a bir rough around the edges, in a way that is difficult to describe. Still worth the price point.

Glass. Little cloudy, golden yellow with medium white head. Medium citrus and straw aroma, also noticable very nice basement accents. Flavour is balanced between dry malt base with some woody accents and nearly medium bitterness. You can also taste some tropical fruits and saison-like accents. Light to medium body, smooth texture, average carbonation, finish is medium and dry, aftertaste is light bitter. Drinkability is high, very refreshing. In general really solid, drinkable and refreshing beer. Very balanced, where none of the element overpower others.

Thanks to my brother for sending me this bottle.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is very heavy on the brett and orange citrus, with some wheat thrown in as well. The flavor is more of the same. The leathery brett and orange citrus notes really come through and stand out. The wheat provides a nice malt backbone and keeps the bitterness fairly low. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice beer, glad I got to try it.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Feb 2014. Picked up recently from my local beer specialist (they've been getting quite a bit of Mikkeller recently). From what I can make out on the label, it's an IPA brewed with wheat and fermented with brettanomyces. Should be interesting!

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle-conditioned. A pale golden hue with faint haze and low carbonation. Produces a large head of brilliant white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a surface layer. Aroma of bright citrus hops with undertones of earthy wheat and a vinous hint of yeast in the background.

Tastes of aromatic citrus hops with a mildly acidic character and a dry finish. Notes of citrus, grainy wheat and earthy, vinous yeast. Subtle bitterness upon swallowing, and a hint of lactic/vinegary sourness in the background. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry. A slight acidity on the tongue, and mild astringency. A tad undercarbonated. Aftertaste of sour wheat malt with citrus overtones.

Impressive - a subtle IPA with fantastic balance. Despite the novel ingredients and yeast, the finished article is tasty and very drinkable. The brett adds a distinctive note to the background, but doesn't overpower or clash with the other flavours. The aroma/taste has a dry, lactic - almost lemony sourness that complements the citrus hops perfectly. If it weren't for the price tag I'd grab another one (or two). Excellent - well worth trying if you encounter it.

This beer is a mildly hazed light gold color with just a little sediment settling. A foamy pillow of pure white head sets at between one and two fingers high and has pretty good retention to it. Lacing is left more in spotting, though some thinnish patches can be found lightly around the glass.
The smell brings the funk, all kinds of barnyard but not neglecting the hops. The wehat is also not overshadowed, making itself known as well. Good integration, all said.
The funk steps aside in the taste for hops bitterness and the wheat backbone to come out more strongly. Tart and funky notes come out more in a lingering finish.
The wheat makes it nice and crisp, with carbonation at a nice level of moderation, and a light but solid body.

12oz chalice at the Underground, in advance of their Mikkeller tap takeover later this week.

This beer appears a slightly cloudy, medium golden straw colour, with one finger of bubbly, loosely foamy off-white head, which leaves a decent sinking storm cloud lace around the glass as things duly settle.

It smells of bitter orange and grapefruit citrus, surprisingly (I guess) funky yeast, aged lemon flesh, subdued pale grainy malt, with a touch of wheaty astringency, a hint of black pepper, and further leafy, floral hops. The taste is rather prominently funky yeast, mostly of the barnyard sort, well supported by the grainy, edgy wheat malt, and attending citrus and floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly sedate, though pervasive enough to justify itself, the body an adequate medium weight, and generally smooth, the hops not quite that adventuresome. It finishes well off-dry, the wheat character discovering its spine, while the hops lend some fruitiness to the cause, and their own offset to the lingering, and now thankfully muted funky yeast notes.

Not really all that prominently wheaty, nor hoppy, as the yeast is the star here, rendering this gimmick inert - it appears that yeast is the new hop, instead. A Belgian IPA, at best, and a so-so one at that.

Pours cloudy yellow, sediment laden, with mushroom cloud of a head. Citrus hoppy aroma exists together with funk. Smooth mouthfeel. The taste is the worst of barnyard, really stinky, with bold hops to make it through drinkability. Do not open this bottle unless you know what you are in for. A hoppy wild farmhouse.

Pours gold with a small head.
Nose shows lemon and elderflower brett notes along with farmhouse characters. Little else.
Bretty flavours too, very farmhouse-y with a little elderflower as well. Not much wheat character.
Good moderately high carbonation.

Bright pale gold with a billowing head of soapy white foam that slowly recedes after a few minutes. Some soapy suds stick to the edges in a sparse spotty pattern. Bright clarity with a slight haze.

Nice Brett aroma with some dried fruit and damp stable hay aromas.

Dry with a hint of astringency, lots of Brett in the taste as well. Doesn't come across like an IPA, more of a Brett Saison or BPA. Some earthy bitterness in the aftertaste. Grassy, yeasty, very dry. Hint of dried pineapple, a little horseblanket. This is a nice beer, not as out there as funkier bottles of Burton Bridge Empire IPA, more clean and well balanced. Worth a try, good intro to Brett for a novice.

11.2 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a slightly hazy straw gold color with about an inch frothy off-white head. There's a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice and hoppy, the brew smells like citrusy hops (lemon peel, tropical fruit, oranges), brett, and a bit of wheat. The taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like citrusy hops (a lot of tart citrus, tropical fruit, orange/lemon peel), brett, wheat, and some grassy hops. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's a little bit coating and has good carbonation. I think this is a good overall brew, but probably not worth $4.99 a bottle. Definitely worth a try though!

Poured from the bottle into a stemless wine glass.

A real nice orb glowing lemon yellow, slow rising carbonation crawling. Head is big and fluffy white, hints of creamy with lots of retention and clumps. Aggressive, and light colored. Great look.

Great nose. Lemon citrus hop, salty brett. Dry yeast and bread punch, real nice. Some faint garden floral notes also, and lots of barnyard earth stench cowpie going on. Really like where this is going.

Taste is a quasi mix of saison hot and hop power. Quick hot sharp hop bitter blast, but quickly fleeting. Long lasting brett finish and dry. Crisp with a weird hop bite, but kind of fun.

Overall the beer is kind of all over and sort of fools you a bit style wise, but it's pretty tasty.

Appearance: straw colored and somewhat hazy with white mottled head. Started med high but faded to thin (but still present) cap. High carb has kept head intact throughout drinking.

Smell: Light fruity/ spicy hop balanced nicely with wheat aroma. Brett a perfect third player - very present adding a nice depth to fruit and grainy aromas. Some fruity brett acidity is present, and very slight hint of funk.

Taste: Relatively high hop bitterness strikes first and initially seems unbalanced, leaving almost puckering bitterness. But not quite to that level, and as my palate warms to the beer the ibu's actually seem to do a good job of carrying this great wheat/ brett beer. A nice lemon like flavor emerges - but a complex fruitiness that I attribute to brett, which includes some peach and melon with moderate acidity. Brett funk is low, but that intriguing woody character that borders on funk is all over this beer.

Mouthfeel: Moderate body with creamy finish, boosted by fairly high carb. Somewhat puckering sensation I attribute to hop bitterness combined with brett acidity

Overall: A very nice brett beer with hop bittering a little higher than I would expect. But it works, for the most part. Brett character perfectly done, just the right amount of acid, fruit and earthy/ woody complexity.

The Mikkeller version, two year old bottle, shared by Bob at our tasting last night.

Pours a golden, slightly hazy yellow, with a one inch head, and some lacing down the glass.

Smells like lemon, hay, some citrus hops, and wheat.

The taste is similar- the years on this bottle have allowed the Brett to completely take over- it tastes more like a wild saison or something like that than an IPA at this point. There's a little bit of an acidic twang, with lots of barnyard like funk, some wheat/hop bitterness, some citrus, mostly lemon.

Light bodied, medium carbonation, crisp, dry, mouthfeel.

A good one to start the tasting off with, this bottle has held up pretty well.

A: The beer is relatively clear light yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that died down but consistently left a short head covering the surface and a coating of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of funkiness are present in the nose along with hints of citrusy hops.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of barnyard funk along with hints of citrusy hops—grapefruit seems to stand out in particular. The hops contribute a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied on the palate and has some crispness along with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The addition of Brettanomyces really makes the smell and taste of this beer interesting, although it's balanced enough with the underlying beer so the hops still shine through and the funkiness isn't too overpowering. The wheat malts makes this lighter-bodied and easier to drink compared to other IPAs.

Brassy yellow, bright and clear, with a moderately dense white head that falls over a few minutes to a thick film and 1cm raised lace curtain. Vigorous bead.

Nose has a distinctive chalky, musky, funky character from the collision of the yeast, hops and wheat. Solid lemon-sherbet/lemon-cleaner presence, sweeter tropical high notes from the hops and mild sweaty socks and dried hay notes keeping it rustic. Really nicely done.

The tart, dry yeast and wheat combo is more dominant, with big upfront lemon pith and breath freshener notes before the hops emerge later, bringing passionfruit and intriguing floral notes into play.

Pretty light entry with a little oiliness, presumably from the hops, but rapidly becomes uncompromisingly dry to the extent that whatever bitterness there may be is completely drowned out.

Excellent concept, and very well executed for the most part. Only criticism is the aggressive drying acidity detracts from the drinkability. To be fair, much of the hop character has likely been lost in the 5 months since bottling.

Poured into an imperial pint. Color was a pale golden color, with a thck bubbly head. Head quickly faded down to thin wispy bubbles with occasional spots stuck to the sides. Fair amount of carbonation rose from the bottom. Aroma was definitely hoppy with strong herbal scents as well. Can't place it exactly, but something like sage or rosemary. Nicely nuanced without being overpowering. Flavor was tangy hops, with a tad of weak orange in the back. A little too sticky in the mouth, not so much coated, but tacky. Nicely tingly on the tongue. Overall a nice twist. Good flavors and interesting.

12oz bottle into snifter. Have enjoyed this beer a few times over the years and am glad to finally have the time to make some notes on it. Nice rich fruit notes on the nose, hazy appearance, lively carbonation. Slightly bitter per style, signature Mikkeller attributes are apparent almost "Sessionable", very drinkable.

A: Pours a golden straw colour. Relatively clear with a giant fluffy white head.
S: Pineapple, tons of awesome brett funk; Wet horse blanket and urinal cake.
T: Lots of lemon and pineapple. A little bitter aspirin on the finish.
M: Good carbonation. Nice dry finish.
O: Great showcase of brett. Not too much wheat character, brett must have been hungry. Could drink a few of these if they weren't $9.50 a bottle.

Straight pour from a pry-off 11.2oz/330ml bottle to a can glass; no freshness or bottling dating that I can see, but given that it’s a well-stored brett beer, I’m not too worried.

Appearance (4.25): Believe it or not, this pours with a very bright, almost perfectly clear yellow body, sitting underneath two fingers of off-white foam that crackles away slowly but visibly. Staying power is average, but lacing is well above: wide-set webs of frilly lace, legs connecting loosely-defined collars all around the glass. Dainty and quite pretty. For some reason, this beer just strikes me the right way.

Smell (4.25): It’s certainly got a nice aroma! Somewhat fruity, bitter-tart citrusy hop notes mingle well with the peppery, fruity combination of brett and wheat, the latter of which also plays well with the earthy, slightly musty side of the brett. A little piney and a little spicy in the end. Lightly bready, moderately hoppy, moderately funky, moderately spicy, lightly fruity.

Taste (4.5): Hops and brett definitely duke it out a bit here, showing a solid citrus zest bitterness that floats in and out next to bretty pepper and a light, fruity tartness—the overall effect being some yellow grapefruit juice, minerally white wine, a tiny bit of pineapple sweetness, and some very tangy lemonade. Actually, this is very lemony, now that I think about it. The malt body is soft and bready without coming off as starchy or biscuity—just nice, soft, fresh-baked white bread with a light drizzle of honey. There’s a slightly peppery, musty-funky undercurrent throughout the whole thing, too, which is excellent because it stops short of coming off as phenolic in any way. Damp hay, white wine, tangy pear, lemon zest, and a spiciness I can’t pin down really sum it up nicely. No booze. Excellent stuff!

Mouthfeel (4.75): Eminently drinkable—like, really hard to just sip. The carbonation seems modest but tingles early and ends up quite fluffy, washing out with a nice, full foaming effect only at the swallow. The body is just a bit on the light side of medium-weight, and has the perfectly dry feel that begs for more but without parching even for a second.

Overall (4.25): This is, I think, an outstanding beer. It’s so easy to drink, so tasty, and bright and lemony, and so well-executed—the brewers avoided every single downfall of brett that I can think of. It’s not phenolic, it’s almost perfectly carbonated, everything meshes, and its funk is never off-putting. If I were a brewer, this is exactly the kind of beer I’d want to make all of the time. Kudos, Mikkeller and Grassroots, because this beer is awesome.

Poured from Bottle into tulip. Paid $6 at deciccos ardsley. Pours a clear golden color with nice head and lacing. Smell is just bad...very bad. Urinal cake is the way to describe it. Lemony and bad.
Taste is decent. Citrus hop with wheaty malts. Hold your nose when you sip this.
Its a good beer with an absolutely horrible aroma...so...not my fav here. Not worth it except for pure curiosity.

11.2 oz bottle purchased at Hunger Mountain Coop.

Clear golden body with a frothy white head.

Nose is tart vinegar brett with a "wheaty" malt note.

Flavor is crisp, tart, grapefruit citrus, tasty and quenching. Not much malt to note. I'm not sure that the wheat is doing much here, but the combination of hops and brett are even better done than Orval.

Mouthfeel is tart, stripping, zesty.

A very interesting brew. I bought it on the Grass Roots name alone, but well worth the taste.

Slow pour into my Spencer Abbey goblet. Persistent head with nice lacings. Color is pale yellow, almost green. Smell is nice, hoppy, hard to describe. Tastes very crisp, hints of apples. Tart. Not at all IPA tasting - more of a farmhouse ale flavor (must be the yeast). Body is a little watery. Overall a nice crisp beer, but not worth the $6/bottle I paid.

Pours a big pasty white fluffy 2 finger head that fades fairly slowly with nice pillowy lacing, semi clear bright golden yellow-orange color.

Nose brings a nice Brett funk, light lemon, grassy, little horsehair, lemongrass, hay, wheat, earthy, touch of fruity zest like hops,

Taste brings more Bretty funk right off, little horsehair and earthy bready doughy funk, light yeasty flavor from the funk as well. Then grassy flavors, some wheat and hay, grainy, bready and grainy. Then light grassy and lemony hops, little citrus like rind and fruity hops, nice bitterness, floral and bright. Finish is dry and funky, more bready malt flavors, lingering barnyard funk, decent bitterness and light floral grassy citrus hops.

Mouth is med bodied, lots of carb.

Overall very nice, very tasty, great Brett funk, hops blend nicely with it without overpowering adding nice floral, grassy, lemony and bit citrus hops, and the wheat adds subtlties to the underlying beer, without being too drowned out. mikkeller makes some great beers, just wish they weren't so expensive.

First had: on tap at Teresa's, Wayne, PA

Poured a hazy straw-yellow color with a nice cap of foamy white head that retained and laced well. Big wheat profile on the nose, musty yeast, grass, and a bit of an uncomfortable ammonia presence that was just teetering outside my tolerance level. There was actually an uncanny tea-like sensation in the taste up front, giving way to pale malt sweetness, wheaty acidity, spicy yeast, notes of citrus zest and earth. Medium body, and aside from the questionable aroma, a pretty solid brew overall.

Appearance: glowing, brilliant, transluscent yellow bodied beer with 3 fingers of bone white head. Head has some staying power and lingers for a while, but eventually drops to an uneven cap. Tons of lacing all over the side of the glass.

Smell: oranges, tropical fruits, and fruity brett are the things that are abounding in the aroma of this beer. Slighty yeasty and bready aromoas are less intense.

Taste: the beer starts of with a mild generic bitterness that really doesnt have a flavor. Then some tangerines and tropical fruit notes appear. Fruity and earthy brett notes hit mid palate. Slightly sweet malt profile of wheat and wet hay. Maybe even a hint of farmhouse funk, but its very mild. A hint of honey sweetness and fruity esters. Not really any lingering flavors are noted in the aftertaste of this beer.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with moderate carboantion. well carbonated beer. very drinkable and refreshing. slightly crisp and very clean. It feels like its a delicate belgian beer.

Overall: This beer is tasty, but not over done. It would be a great beer to have on a really hot day. The brett is showcased fairly well and the hops slightly take a bit of a back seat in the overall picture of the beer. This beer reminds me more of a saison than any other beer style, which was something that I can appreciate about this beer. I liked this collaboration between Mikkeller and Grassroots. I think that this beer has a heavier influence from Grassroots than from Mikkeller.
