Celebrating all-thing-Mexican, Mikkeller jam-packs this stout full of every flavor that's even loosely associated with the Central American country. Aside from tomatoes, this ale is meant to be a mole quesadilla in a glass.

Opaque black in the glass, the beer slowly separates its dark and ominous body underneath from its mocha whipped topping to cap. Long in its retention, the ale coats the glass with intricate lacing patterns as the beer fades.

Sweet and sour in its scent, the ale is rounded with a plethora of complexity. Thinly sweet with candy-shop sweet scents, the beer soon releases tart sherry and port notes that are as succulent as it is acidic. Spicy agave with heavy toast and cocoa powder round out its rich but cidery scent.

Deliciously sweet and roasty, the beer starts out with a French-press coffee flavor, equipped with roast, nuttiness and earthen rootiness. Its burnt sweetness invites that taste of dark fruits- grapes, currants, raisin, dates and licorice all playing a role in its complex middle palate. As the smoky sweetness recedes, its tequilla flavor rises with a spicy fruitiness along with some bright vegetative tones.

Full bodied but not shy on balancing agents, its roast provides dryness. Its hop bitterness provides resinous dryness. Both its natural ale and infused booze provide dryness. Its fading sweetness provides dryness... yet, the beer finishes lightly chalky and only malty-dry with vinous tartness to round it out in the end.

Even though the beer's marketing seems to be a mockery of what's Mexican in America, its taste is true to those flavors south of the boarder, even though the avacado, black bean and honey flavors remain largely below flavor threshold.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours an extremely dark brown with 1/4 inch dark mocha head. Good retention. Decadent in appearance.
S: Cocoa, spice (chili), brown sugar, and an earthy funk.
T: Hot chili, cocoa, and a bunch of other muddled flavors. Way too much going on here.
M: Light body. Hot spice.
D: Not very drinkable beyond more than the first couple sips. An interesting idea, but the result is too muddled and way too spicy.

Huge creamy fluffy dark mocha colored thick rich almost 2 Finger head that partially reverse waterfall, so much soapy lacing that just sticks forever, pitch black beer. Huge legs too. The appearance can't get any better.

Nose brings tons if dark malts, some roast, hint soy, super heavy dark choc and malted milk ball, bitter with hint acrid but barely, hint of coffee and touch of hot pepper, nice nutty aroma with some creamy almond milk, light green plant leaf, big dark brick choc, a deep nosing brings dried black beans like the crusty beans on the sides of black bean dip. Also some earthy spicy chewy hops.

Taste is a bit different, this time tons of hops and bitterness, big earthy spicy hops, chewy hops, light acrid burnt taste, hint char and dark roast, light tin too. Then lots more chocolate, very bitter dark choc, brick of choc, light creamy lactose and a nutty almond milk. Bitter acrid blends with an earthy green leaf flavor and light vegetative. Light chili pepper heat in the back of the throat. Some light creamy black bean dip flavours. Finish is very bitter, semi sticky sweet, lots more dark choc, light pepper heat lingering, plenty of earthy spicy hops, chewy like, light green plant flavor.

Mouth is thick bodied, bit creamy thick, decent small bubble carb.

Overall great to start, bit iffy to finish.

A - Omg... why do Mikkeller beers always look so great. Pitch black body. Thick, creamy cap of dark mocha foam. Sky scraper head leaves carpet-levels of lacing along the glass. Incredible retention.

S - Bright chili peppers, black beans, nutella, chocolate milk, saffron, turmeric, cocoa nibs. Fantastic complexity.

T - Kaladoskopic. Ancho peppers, coffee grinds, cocoa, black beans. Leafy, almond center. Dry, green pepper, tomato plant stems, and burnt chipotle finish.

M - Medium frame with a dry, chalky body.

O - One of the best looking single stouts I've ever seen. Excellent execution with above average enjoyability.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a shockingly dark brown almost black hue with a massive mocha head that's super creamy and dense. Tons of lacing, just incredible. Lacing sucks around too.

S - Aromas of that chocolatey spice notes reminiscent of chipotle, super creamy almond milk, lots of cocoa, light vegetation, just tons of chocolate. Very nice Mexican black bean dip when exhaling and inhaling quickly. Super fun.

T - Taste is not evenly remotely close to the nose. Very bitter, almost metallic, light chocolate, spices/chili, flashes of vegetable, very weird to be this far from the nose.

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, not nearly as creamy as I expected.

O - Overall I was blown away by the appearance and nose, taste just fell flat for me though

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a half finger high light mocha colored head that died down a bit but consistently left a large patch of bubbles in the center, a collar around the edge and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark roasted malts and chocolate are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, but is more complex and also has notes of spices and chili peppers. The roastiness lingers through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little dry (from the roasted malts) and creamy on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O:This beer has an interesting mix of flavors and isn't that difficult to drink.

Was pleasantly surprised with the jet black pour and big brown head that lingered for about 10 minutes with thick brown lacing reaching the top of the glass
Smells of roasted coffee beans, brown sugar, caramel, burnt chocolate
Taste of sweet cocoa and a lactose like sweetness. A little bit of lingering spiciness from the chilles in the aftertaste
Mouthfeel a bit thin
Overall okay beer which I would compare to a Westbrook Mexican Cake that in my opinion is much better as far as complexity and mouthfeel

I didn't know what to expect with this beer - I think I was guessing it would taste a little like drinking mole sauce. I was pleasantly surprised and it was a delicious dessert beer.

It poured about as dark as I expected but had a great thick head on it. The smell reminded me of a kona coconut porter because the dark cocoa and burnt coconut was definitely there. The taste proved the nose true and was highlighted with just a hint of spice. The finish was just a little smoother than melted chocolate. This was a great dessert beer and paired well with dark chocolate. I will definitely have another one.

My one small point of contention - being from Texas, I can't say I would associate this beer with a ranger. Too rich.

Reviewed from notes.

A- Pitch black beer poured from the 750ml bottle into a goblet. Very dark brown, close to black head about two fingers high. Good cap retention with a nice pillow leaving webs of lace.

S- Big cocoa and burnt roast malts up front. Leafy basil-like avocado leaves and big coconut as well.

T- Big deep roast malts up front with a great cocoa flavor overall. Coconut is prevalent as well as some spicy vegetal chili, slight almond and a nice herbal leafy avocado leaf flavor, reminds me of basil in a way.

MF- Thick body with a creamy feel. Moderate and silky carbonation and a roast bitterness throughout.

Reminds me of both Hunapuh's and Indra Kunindra in certain ways. Lots going on but it goes together pretty nicely.

Leave it to Mikkel to make something like this... Anyway, it pours a dark black-brown topped by over a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises cocoa, black beans, dark greens, and spicy greens (akin to green chiles). It's an odd assortment, but it somehow works. The taste holds notes of strongly-bitter roasted malts, dark greens, coffee, and a small mixture that I can only truly describe as "miscellaneous stuff" throughout the background. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a somewhat surprisingly okay beer. I'll admit, I thought the ingredients list was a bit too odd to work properly, but things turned out better than expected. Still, it's just good, not great; definitely something worth trying, though.

Had this a few nights ago when I was visiting some friends. Doing this off memory, but this was a big intrigue and a great beer from Mikkeller.

Appearance was really nice, deep brown almost black. Thin khaki head as I remember. Looked really nice in the glasses. Just what I expected of the beer in appearance. Cool label as well.

Smelled awesome. You could get some of that almonds, sweet creamy scent, with roast and black beans. There was a smooth chocolatey scent that mingled with a bit of vanilla and tequila. It was all there and put it all out.

Taste was great too, another person who was there said it was like a sweet little mexican meal in a glass. Pretty much said it all. Sweetness was balanced, there was spice, the black beans came through and made it slightly creamy with the almond milkiness. It was just nuts. Had a slight vegetable thing to it, guessing from the avocado leaves? I don't know. There was a clear barrel age taste with just a hint of tequila... I mean... dang. I'm salivating just thinking of it.

My only downer was that I felt it could have been a bit more creamy and a bit more dense. The alcohol content was on the low side but this was okay... the beer would have been really damaged by going further. I just wanted a bit more creaminess to it though, a bit more body... but not heavy like black hole or anything.

Overall, great! I really want to have this beer again and would buy it without much thought.

Bottle I brought to share at Wowcoolman's tasting.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, chile, spices, and smoke aromas. Taste is much the same with smoke, spice, and chile flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some interesting aromas and flavors.

Pours a very dark brown color with a huge brown head into my glass. Resembles chocolate milk or something.

Almond milk, cocoa and chili come through in the nose. Very spicy. Reminds me of how the Aztecs created cocoa drinks.

Spicy and exotic with a very nice balance of nutty almond and delicious cocoa with everything else in-between. So tasty. I can't believe it's not an imperial stout because the profile is close enough.

Lingering spiciness and cocoa dominate the mouthfeel. I'm actually sweating after finishing a few sips. Has a deep burn too going down. Kinda like that of a smoked beer but dialed-down considerably.

A very complex and interesting beer that you should definitely spend $12.99 for. I wonder if it can be aged?

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet. Stamped 9621210.

A: Three fingers of dense, creamy, dark-brown head. The body is almost (but not quite) black. Heavy lacing.

S: Very interesting. Some pepper (cayenne?), cacao nibs, and other vegetal matters. "Brewed with spices, almond milk, cocoa, chili, black beans, and avocado leaves." That kind of makes sense. But it's still weird.

T/M: YUM. I am not unsurprised by this flavour. This is pretty much what I thought it would be. Basically a milk stout with some chilies, spices, and odd vegetal notes. The almond milk helps the body tremendously and avoids entirely the thinness present in the Texas Ranger. Almost like a fine gin mishmashed with a milk stout.

O: I really enjoy this. Incredibly rewarding, and it only grows on me as I drink. I definitely recommend the whole bottle. The only way to do it.

Acquired at a local SoCal beer store for $15.00. Expectations are high; this is me favourite brewer. "Ale brewed with spices, almond milk, cocoa, chili, black beans & avocado leaves." This is not to be confused with the tequila barrel aged version of this beer, which comes in a smaller format green glass bottle. 6.6% ABV confirmed. Brown glass bottle with standard unbranded silver pressure cap served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. The number "9621210" appears on the back label; not sure what that means. Brewed & Bottled at De Proef. Imported by the Shelton Bastards.

I need to take a minute to note something really odd. On the bottom right of the front label, it says 11.2 fl oz - but I've seen one or two bottles of beer in my time, and this is most definitely NOT that size; I figure this for 750ml format. Very strange; this must be a labeling mistake.

Served chilled and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a gorgeous rich dark tan colour head of great cream, great thickness, and great (~9+ minute) retention. Body colour is a solid nontransparent opaque black. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Quite appealing. I'm looking forward to trying it. Thin lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head slowly recedes.

Sm: Roasted barley, cocoa powder, dark malts, chocolate malts, and spice. I don't get any of the strange notes mentioned on the label. Maybe a hint of buried chili pepper. Interesting enough; the roasted barley alone grabbed my attention. A moderately strong aroma. No yeast character or alcohol is detectable.

T/Mf: Creamy up front, giving way to a rough dry body comprised of dark malts and muted chili powder. Boy, that dryness is wretched; I'm not sure which ingredient is to blame but I doubt it's the milk. Body is weak and it thins out towards the climax. Coarse in the early second act, really destroying drinkability. Mouthfeel here does not at all suit the flavours. Carbonation is good, but that's the best thing I can say about the texture. Buried roast. I think proteins are the problem here, maybe from the beans. Chocolatey throughout, with some nice cocoa notes. I get spice up front; structurally almost all of the flavour is right there in the first and early second acts; it really falls off towards the end. The finish is nice, though, evoking slick chocolate milk. Fairly thick. The flavour is nice, but the mouthfeel is very poorly done and noticeably stands out for its low quality. Methinks the weird spicing and ingredients resulted in this.

Dr: A disappointment from Mikkeller, especially at its high price. The main flaw is the mouthfeel, which is not at all what it needs to be. Hides its ABV well, though. I wouldn't get it again, but I'll probably end up trying the tequila barrel aged variant. After all, every beer gets a chance - especially Mikkel's. Wouldn't recommend to friends. I'll be able to finish the bottle without issue, but I'm not excited to do it. A failed experiment.

The above notes withstanding, it does get better as it warms.

This pours a thick solid black with inches of cocoa colored foam. It looks impressive. I’m drooling already.

The aroma is reminiscent of a light cocoa dusting and some cocoa powder, with each sip bursting with a layered coffee chocolate and light chili roastiness. There’s a wonderful sharp finish and a great spicy kick. I loved this brew.

(Wish I could pick out what the avocado leaves contribute, tho.)

Had this on-tap in a shaker pint.

A: A skilled pour by the bartender yielded an opaque deep mahogany colored ale with a finger-and-a-half of dense, slightly rocky head.

S: Dark roasted malt, bitter chocolate, a touch of pepper and elusive indeterminate spice, (see below) and a certain earthiness.

T: Up front and all-around this beer tastes very much like a really complex porter to me. It has a full flavored foundation of roasted malt and cocoa that are very well balanced. There's a certain crispness that I must assume comes from the chili spice, which to my taste is offset by just a hint of syrupy, woody almond. A little background research reveals that avocado leaf imparts a flavor not unlike anise. There is a touch of earth that follows the same note in the nose. This I think is the spice note that I had the most trouble identifying while tasting (and in the nose) but it is there; I want to try this one again.

M: The body of this beer was really a nice medium feel; matched the body quite well. I only had one, but at 6.6% abv I would have to say that this beer has a body that is invitingly smooth. I'm assuming the starch and protein from the black beans make more of a contribution to the body than the taste or aroma.

O: I have to say I was impressed by the exotic, yet restrained execution of Mexas Ranger. I liked the fact that it was full-flavored and complex, yet easy to drink and smooth. I found myself almost involuntarily taking big swigs, gulps even, which is not usually my style at all. I could easily see myself downing a couple of pints. I also found it quite appetizing; I did not want to eat at all before I drank it but ended up getting some pretzels and beer cheese with my next selection.

A: Pitch-black pour with a huge, very dense dark brown head. Fades impossibly slowly and never truly goes away. Great retention. Almost solid wall of perfect lacework.

S: Smoky. Some chocolate and ...beans? Kind've has a vegetal quality to it. Not exactly, it's hard to describe but vegetal is close. Probably some combination of the beans and avocado. Very unique, but not that hot.

T: Smoky up front, very similar to regular Texas ranger. Some chocolate mixes in and then come the beans. Lots of beans in the middle mixing with the smoke, giving it sort of a charred black bean flavor. No noticeable heat wave like Texas Ranger, though there is some very very mild simmering hot in the aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied and surprisingly heavy. Very chalky/charred and drying on the back end.

O: Meh. Texas Ranger was pretty good but this one is just overdone. Has almost no heat compared to the original, and the smoke seems cranked up in this version. Thus it is a bit acrid and chalky. The off-flavors of beans and what I presume to be avocado aren't helping anything either. Certainly a unique beer but it's more or less a mess.

Split a 750ml poured into a boulevard tulip

A: pours black with a three finger dark mocha coffee head, this beer looks delicious... Nice retention and excellent lacing.

S: I deffiantly smell black beans, black beans and chocolate, with a touch of Choctaw and roast... As the brew warms the peppers start to come out a bit, with a touch of creamyness and smoke.

T: nice roasty chocolate with a touch of somke, I feel like the peppers come in on the end adding a little kick of heat tona dry roasty finish... Very tasty and balanced... I swear I taste the black beans.

M: nice full creamy mouthfeel with a dry and slightly hitter roasty finish,
With a touch of heat, lush and enjoyable.

O: this is really tasty and delicious, all the ingredients are very subtle and very well balanced... I really enjoyed this.

Nose shows roasted malt, chocolate, earthy notes and coffee beans.
Similar flavours. Lots of roasted malt, earthy notes, cocoa and an aggressive roasty finish.
Carbonation seems full on.
Not sure how much the spices/additions add to the beer.

Pitch black and almost oily with a creamy dark tan head. Good head retention and lots of lacing. Nice.

Roasty, slightly smoky aroma with a fair dose of sweetness and lots of alcohol. Some cinnamon and cocoa. Really nice.

Complex and full of flavour. The touches of chilli are evident. Lots of alcohol and malt with the chocolate over the top too.

Medium-full body with moderately-high carbonation. Good.

A solid beer. Lots of fun flavour combinations going on here. The base stout is very, very good and the whole comes together well.

This definately has some spices added such as 5 types of chillies,avocado leaves,almond syrup,black turtle beans and a couple others,it pours the darkest kola hue ive ever seen and leaves a mocha laced two finger head and clingy lacing everywhere,on smell i get aromas of hot spicy chillies,chocolate malts,herbs and mexican salsa,the mouthfeel is medium bodied with minimal carbonation and has tastes of dark chocolate,spicy hops,roasted nuts,caramel and finished with a lingering heat thats not overpowering it just warms your whole body and overall it definately has a worse bark than bite as on first smell i thought this was gonna really leave my mouth numb from the chillies but it doesnt it just lets you know they are there but in saying that i do like it and would have no problem drinking it again cheers

I had this bottle at the Mikkeller Bar in Copenhagen. Poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy dark brown with a finger of tan head that fades to a layer on top of the pour and leaves a little bit of lace on the glass.

Smell: Mexican spices with dark malt and some sweetness. I'm not getting much heat from the peppers.

Taste: Mild chilis with a roasty bitterness. I'm getting a flavor that I can only describe as Mexican spice. There seems to be a light woody note here as well.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with smooth carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I didn't like this quite as much as the regular version. Not a bad effort by any means. I couldn't pick out the individual flavors, but the Mexican spices were interesting.
