Mikkeller is like a kaleidoscope when it comes to making different styles of beer. The Milk Stout was brewed at De Proef and bottled in a 330 ml format. Let's do it. On to the beer:

Some espresso coloring gets into the head, which forms an inch thick and leaves very good lacing around. As for the beer, its color is like a thick black coffee. Speaking of coffee, I get a large dose of coffee in the aroma, and also a little sweetness. Dulce de leche and a surprising spring of hops add additional notes for a complete experience.

Milk stout or coffee stout? Maybe it's a hybrid. The first note I get is just a little sweet and is quickly followed by a roasty edge. Black licorice makes its mark as well. With these flavors in my mouth, it's no surprise that there's a fun time happening too. It's medium-full bodied with a very low level of carbonation, and finished with a bittersweet chalky aftertaste.

Stouts may be Mikkeller's strength, and their version of a Milk Stout is no doubt a dandy.

Pours black with a large, lasting tan head.
Nose shows cocoa, milk chocolate, hazelnut pralines and roasted barley.
Very sweet flavours, cloyingly sweet in fact. Some roasted malt behind the sweetness but very weak.
Needs higher carbonation, body feels watery too.
Too much lactose by far.

330 ml bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half tan head that sticks around for a while. There's also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like roasted malt, bittersweet and milk chocolate, and some coffee. The taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of some vanilla. It's a good roasty and sweet tasting beer. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick, creamy and easy to drink. It's also well carbonated. I think it's a good brew overall, I'd like to try this one again at some point. $5.99 a bottle.

While the chocolaty flavors are distinct, there's a hint of spiciness and bitterness that make this beer more than just a sweet stout. Beautiful appearance with a huge head and pitch black color. The taste is delicious and the body smooth and rich. Very easy drinking and goes down way too fast. This could easily be an everyday beer for me if the cost were not so prohibitive. and yet, compared to most Mikkeller beers, this one is much less expensive. I enjoyed this very much and will certainly have again when I can find it. Delicious.

From a 330 ml bottle (code on cap was smudged and illegible) into a snifter.

A-A slightly aggressive pour produces almost two fingers of dark mocha-colored foam. Retention is poor but a thick cap hangs around and there is some decent lacing. The brew is nearly black and opaque.

S-I smell lots of roasted, chocolatey malts. The chocolate is milk to dark in intensity and the impression is semi-sweet. There is a good dose of lactic sweetness, too. Not much char or bitterness to be found. The scent is a bit simple, but this beer is good at what it does.

T-There is lots of rich, milky, sweet cocoa and chocolate flavors here. The roasted bitterness factor is low (but not completely absent) and the lactic funkiness is moderate to high. I also get just a bit of dark-roast coffee. The finish gives just a hint of hoppy bitterness.

M-The feel is robust and mostly creamy, but not terribly heavy. Carbonation is soft. The feel pairs well with the flavors and style.

O-This is one of my favorite beers from Mikkeller. It is not over-the-top complex, but it does provide lots of well-balanced flavor, which is a great example of the style. The chocolate tastes real and although sweetness is high, it is appropriate for the style and flavors here. I will be seeking more of this beer.
