Mikkeller "Sort Gul." 7.30% ABV confirmed. "Black India Pale Ale." I've had a great black IPA from Mikkeller before, so I'm hoping this is up to par. Mikkel's my favourite brewer; expectations are high. 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard black pressure cap served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Brewed and bottled at De Proef. Imported by the Shelton Bastards.

Served straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: A light bubble show at the bottom of the head as foam seems to run down towards the body. Pours a 5+ finger head of biege-khaki colour. Foamy and a bit frothy. Lacing is sticky and heavy; wow. A bit creamy. Great thickness. Great (10+ minute) retention for the high ABV; that's damned impressive. Body colour is very dark solid brown-black; it's not quite a consistent full jet-black; there's some restraint there. No yeast particles are visible. All around it's pretty impressive.

Sm: Caramel, chocolate malt, dark bittering malts, floral hops, fennel, raisin, light coffee, and light grapefruit citrus. No hop bitterness or bite. It's pretty good for the style. A bit of roast. A subtle aroma of mild strength. I'm excited to try it.

I couldn't wait on the head any longer after five minutes, so I just started drinking through the head - which was still a good 4 fingers in thickness.

T: A marriage of dark bitter malts, light coffee, light roast, and timid caramel with well executed floral hop notes, a touch of grapefruit citrus ester zing, and a bit of biscuity yeast. They don't clash at all. It works surprisingly well. Nicely balanced and built. The coffee in particularly has a delightfully subtle part to play which really helps bring out the roast and hop bitterness; they play off and complement eachother. Its strength is in its subtlety; it isn't amazingly complex but there's plenty going on here. I don't get any alcohol. Any chocolate malt is minimal. One of the better Black IPAs I've had, but Mikkel has done other better ones.

Mf: Soft, chewy, smooth, and wet. Carbonation is perfect. It's light and soothing on the palate, yet presence is still full. It doesn't lack body, but the mouthfeel really aids drinkability. A fine texture that so few brewers seem able to deliver. Complements the flavour profile rather well.

Dr: A success from Mikkel. One of the better beers I've tried in this style. Mikkel's are the only black IPAs I can remember really enjoying. A solid Black IPA that helps remind me why Mikkeller is my favourite 'brewery'. Hides its ABV well. I'd probably get this again, especially when out at a bar. I do wish the price were better as an import, but Danes have no excuse not to try this.

Bottle pour at the post-FWIBF bottle share held at the Adelaide Inn in Paso Robles, CA.

Pours a murky brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid aromas and flavors for the style.

Poured a black body (maybe dark brown) decent khaki head and some minor lace patches around the glass. The aroma steers towards the malts as I get a little sweet caramel edge, some roasted malts, possible chocolate, and then a bit of both spice(?) and some herbal, bitter hops. Not a standout version of this style as it seems to play it safe, if you will, and have a minor hop base supplement a sweet, chocolaty and caramel malt base along with roasted malts for balance. A very enjoyable sipper and this medium bodied beer hits the spot; just wish the hops were slightly more pronounced.

11.2 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: A crazy two finger billowy mocha head was poured that was for the most part slightly reduced and still there. It is a dark brown black color with bo vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Frothy mocha lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Roasted coffee, bitter chocolate, smoke, pine, and citrus.

Taste: Same as above. Pretty balanced with some bitterness in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium carbonation, ashy bitterness, and medium bodied.

Overall: Pretty standard black ale. I like the beer, but more hop presence would make this beer better.

Pours a large, thick head that lasts for a little while with good lacing. Color is dark, close to that of a nice coffee. Smell is primarily that of the roasted malt and pine aroma. The roasted malt and caramel flavor comes through as well as some fruitiness from the hops present but hidden behind the dominant piney and woodsy flavor. Not a bad balance of flavor overall. Medium body for a Black IPA, alcohol hidden nicely. Easy drinker for this style. Very good example of this style. Would like to have had it a bit fresher.

Look: equal thick 2 thumb high off white foam; very slow retention, stays on top. Dark brown/black color, some subtle amber notes. Looks delicious. Lots of lacing, couple of yeast float around. Hard to see any carbonation.

Smell: Piney, herbs, citrus, grapefruit, woody/cedar maybe some fruity hops. Then comes the roasted, sweet, little creamy malt. Good balance. Some hints of tart, dark chocolatish.

Taste: Grapefruit, lime go to roasted sweet, caramel middle malt (intensity of malt taste rises with temperature). After with good balance of piney and roasted bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, crisp carbonation, still kinda silky, dry finish. Alcohol undetected, stupidly easy to drink - i like.

Overall: Gets better every sip/degree of temperature. Good dark IPA, easy to drink; what stands out is the balance - neither hop nor roasted malt stand out or overwhelm.

Pours black with a large, fading tan head.
Nose shows pine, roasted malt and grapefruit. Somewhat limited.
Big roasted malt flavours but with a fair bit of caramel sweetness behind it. Also pine and grapefruit.
Too much carbonation for these flavours.

11.2 fl oz bottle

Appearance - Thick, billowing khaki head after a careful pour, which leaves solid lacing the whole way through. Black coffee color with ruby highlight coming through when held up to a light. A decent amount of sediment is left in the bottle.

Aroma - Floral hops, dark chocolate covered oranges.

Taste - Floral hops, black coffee, and slight bitter chocolate. Some grapefruit juice pulls through at the end to balance out this complex drink.

Mouthfeel - Slick and oily. Finishes dry and bitter. Fairly low carbonation given the size of the head. So complex, yet easy to drink.

Overall - Good beer, would love to try this fresh (No dates on the bottle). No telling how old it is at this point.

Pours a cloudy medium brown, opaque very dark brown in the glass with big light brown head. Sheet of delicate lace down the glass. Smell: pine, navel orange, notes of buttered toasted brown bread and roast. Taste: tangerine into quick sugared dark fruit note into pine blast, with citrus peel, roast, unsweet chocolate, and dark brown sugar towards the finish. Finishes drying but sugary with lingering pine and a burnt-ish note. Better and better as it warms, pretty solid.
