Got this bottle and saved it for 3 months to drink it on my anniversary. Was disappointed. While this was a good imperial ipa, it had a lot of different favors going on. Alcohol was notable. I had ZD for the first time the night before so that May have skewed my ratings. Overall this was okay and I'm glad I tried it. (318 characters)

IPA meets Barleywine for Mikkeller's latest attempt to hop the hell out of an ale for some for the most obnoxious tastes possible.

A hazy swirl of amber, peach and orange settles into the snifter with a short-statured but highly dense mousse rising to the top. This long-lasting head is ivory in color and laces lightly in the beer's wake.

A ton of malt aromas are just as prevalent in the nose as is any hop character- albeit, both are immense. Honey and shortbread waft about the nose and captures a plethora of fruity scents: nectarines, tangerines, mangoes, apricots, passion fruit and pomegranate is just part of the citrus and tropical fruit medley. And then there's the alcohol- straight-up vodka about says it all.

Its hearty and dense taste is teeth-churning and lush with honey, light caramel and biscuit. Highly bready throughout, the hop flavor edges out the malts on the middle palate with all that citrus, tropical and orchard fruit character. Even apples and lemons make their way into the mix from time to time. Its sheer enormity of taste invites a metaillic and salty taste and aids in pulling the hops and malt together even though it further complicates the taste and causes further intimidation. ...oh, and vodka.

Full bodied, the beer has no problem opposing the dry notion of standard IPAs. Instead it celebrates a viscous and chewy citrus sweetness and breadiness. An ill-faded attempt at hop and alcohol dryness is met with a wall of malt thickness. Still finishing hot and mildly fusal, this ale is a sipper for sure.

Double Eye is an ale that drinks like a meal. Its quite messy and complex for IPA standards at any strength. But as a showcase for hop flavor, alcohol and malt support- its tough to find bigger. (1,743 characters)

Pours a hazed almost milky looking burnt orange infused gold with no head to speak of,it's unfiltered I know but the lack of head was off to me.Whoo alot of sweet alcohol over top of citric hops, the alcohol is your face here.Alcohol is so predomianat that it makes it kinda hard to get anything else on the palate, some resiny hops come thru as it warms but not enough to overcome the alcohol. This may be a case of a bad bottle, high reviews and the reputation of the brewery makes me think something went awry here. The bottle I have is not quite a drain pour but just isn't right I don't think and/or hope. (605 characters)

Had on tap at Max's Hopfest (from notes, 8/16-18/13)

A: Hazy amber.

S: Sweet and malty.

T: Sweet and rich but unlike with Struise's 15% HopVerdomme, you really taste the 14% here. There is a burn here.

M: Crisp but with miniscule bubbles.

O: Were it not for the burn this would be much better, but as it stands it mostly a malt bomb. (338 characters)

Draft at Northdown, served in a small snifter.

Bright orange with sharp clarity. a thin but lasting layer of white foam on the surface. Minimal spotty lacing, not a shock considering the high abv.

Aroma of caramel malt, orange zest, booze fumes.

Taste is similar, syrupy sweet, bready caramel malt, some light citrus, and a steamroller bitter finish. Very syrupy with low carbonation, a very slow sipper as a result. Took about an hour to finish it. Not bad, just not my thing. Hop flavor seemed second fiddle to the sticky sweet caramel malt and boozy bitterness. (568 characters)

appearance: hazy apricot. surprisingly full head on the given (given a 14% abv). recedes to wisps. it does look inviting.
smell: wow, this buzzes with tropical fruit. i expected razor sharp hops and a sweetness from the heavy abv but this deep fruit is a welcome surprise.
taste: wow again. the taste delivers too. different than the nose. the booze asserts itself but isn't overpowering. Citrusy hops, a strong malt backbone and to a lesser degree than the nose - fruit.
overall: quite an outstanding beer. (507 characters)

11.2oz bottle from Sherlocks (Marietta, GA). 5.98. Brewed with/at Lervig Aktiebryggeri. Served in a Southern Tier snifter.

Pours murky orange with a small quarter finger pale head. A few tiny pods of lace persist despite the high abz.

Smells like vodka soaked tropical fruits.

Taste is a hoppy reflection of the nose. Big bold booze-infused pineapples and oranges, resinous pine, dank onion/garlic, sweet bread, some peppery notes and a good deal of alcohol. I wouldn't call it balanced and I wouldn't say the alcohol is hidden but this is still pretty darn good.

Oily sticky medium full feel with subtle carbonation. Long boozy fruity aftertaste.

Mikkeller creates another intense drinking experience. Boldly hoppy and boozy, I think this has potential to pass into a really nice barleywine someday- I'm just not sure I'd be able to leave one sitting around without drinking it. And whew- just one bottle can make a man know he's been drinkin. (964 characters)
