750ml gold foil covered capped bottle poured into tulip 29/11/12

A black liquid with a massive mocha foam even after a gentle pour, good retention slowly falling to an island leaving several partial rings of lace

S fennel, anise, licorice, and faint mint mix well with some smoke, molasses and cola, nice dark roast notes of char and faint cold coffee, smells great with lots going on, some earthy and faint citric hops are in there adding to the mix

T less of the lovely licorice, anise and fennel notes and a little more dark roast flavors, more smoke and char especially on the finish, a little burnt sugar and some root beer and cola are noticeable

M silky and just a few bubbles with some faint heat, there's a little left behind on the gums and just a little sticky on the lips

O very solid brew and yet another example of .25 increments being useful so slightly higher overall score. Great use of spicing even though I'm not sure what they used, solid in every area

I might be buying another of these if I have any money left from all the Winter seasonals that just bombarded Alberta. I like the gift tag label and just had to write my name beside both to and from, I deserve a gift to ya know

A: Pours thick and black with huge chocolate-colored head.

S: Light, coffee and roasted malts with slight hint of spice.

T: A nice balance of coffee, chocolate, and spices that give way to a finish dominated by the hops and malt. The alcohol is hidden well.

M: Medium-bodied, light carbonation. Very smooth.

O: A highly enjoyable, well-balanced porter that goes down easy. Would gladly purchase again.

Look: Huge thick equal brown/mocha head, slow retention. Some spectacular shit. Color of the beer is dark brown/black. Leaves lots of lacing. One of the best looking beers.

Smell: Fresh, surprisingly. Nice balance of roasted, coffee malt, hop and spices. Smooth clove, star anise notes, hints of something stronger; also some medicinal/peppermint notes. When it warms up, the roasted malt start to dominate.

Taste: Some sweetness at start, goes to big roasted/mocha/dark chocolate middle malt, still smooth tho. Ends with bitterness from roasted malt and some hop hints. Quite refreshing. No hint of the alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Mid-full body, maybe a bit less then expected. Carbonation lively, but still leaves a nice creamy feel. No warming from the alcohol.

Overall: This one got me a bit off guard - wasn't expecting it to be this good. A fine specimen. The extra spices add the freshness but stay in balance with the whole idea - a very good execution. And it looks stunning.
