A: The beer is slightly hazy yellowish amber in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger and a half high off white head that gradually died down, leaving a thin head covering the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of funk from the brett are present in the nose. By putting my nose deep into the glass I also picked up some hints of ammonia; hints of citrus and also become apparent as the beer warms up.
T: Like the smell, the taste is somewhat funky and has a little sourness along with hints of citrus and gooseberries. The fruity flavors become somewhat stronger as the beer warms up and also have hints of musty yeast.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is an interesting one to try if you like a little funk to spice things up; if you can't handle it just wait for the beer to warm up and it will be a little more palatable.

Doing their part to not just supply tasty beers to the craft audience, but to demonstrate a tutorial on varieties in hops has extended now to yeast. Regardless of how well you think the beer tastes, I applaud Mikkeller for taking the time to educate their fans.

And that education starts as the beer's pour simply looks like a yeast slurry. Dense creamy yellow with golden and peach-like hues, the beer's strong haze gives it a heavy hefe lean. A light ivory froth builds upon the beer but then reduces quickly for a short-lived showing with little trace of lacing.

Dense bread aromas are heavily yeasty with notes of Vegemite, fresh dough, and the grainy-sweet scent of freshly kilned pilsner malt. With little hop character to balance, the yeast carries the show: Light tart scent of dried limes, musty oak, light sea air delivers a tame earthy aroma. Mild banana and apricot offer up a medium ester profile that's not expected from the yeast.

The carryover to flavor is seamless as the taste of the beer is also dense with biscuit, fresh baking bread, dough, wheat, and raw yeast. Its creamy taste blends in with the light honey-ish sweetness for more sweetness that's normal for sour ales. Yeast complements are mildly fruit with oranges, apples, apricot, and banana; but are moderately earthy with flavors of weathered woods, dried limes, brine, hay, lemongrass, and light mushroom. Again with little influence from hops, the clear flavor of yeast contributions are highly evident.

Creamy and lightly slick with the suspended yeast, the beer remains firm and retains its malt sweetness to linger on the mouth deep into the taste. Its rich yeasty texture is counterbalanced with light tangy acidity and mild alcohol warmth.

With full appreciation for what Mikkeller does with the "Single Yeast" series, I feel that the actual flavor of the yeast makes too much of a mark on the beer's taste and interferes with the bi-products that the yeast produce. Regardless of the review score, I consider this beer to be an education of beer deconstruction rather than one for pure delight.

No head really on a a clear golden with copper hues body, no lacing. Aroma includes yeast, orange, resin, some sour orange but overall a mild aroma when for this style you want the aroma to draw you in in anticipation of the flavor. The flavor is just not very sour. I had the Brux version which I felt was alot better. Notes of candied orange, yeast, caramel. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

this is further evidence that yeast is king. it determines everything, and this beer is a great testament to what this strain can do. it pours similar to the others, reddish orange with some haze and a monster white head with pretty food retention. the nose is way funked out, more than a saison but not quite a sour. this yeast really delivers some farmy notes, fruity tartness, and grassy aromas and flavors without overpowering the sturdy hop profile at all. this is a great balance, and like some others in the series, particularly the English style, I wish this was available in affordable 6 packs, its that tasty. very complex and there is a richness of feel about it. the carbonation is the brightest of any of the yeast series so far, and the body is made lighter and more drinkable because of it. this is a series every serious beer drinker should try, its a great educational tool. im not sure I have the stones to use this yeast yet as a homebrewer, but I certainly appreciate mikkellers use of it here. this is top stuff.

One finger of white foam on a lightly hazy, amber body. The head settles slowly and leaves nice lace. Sweet malt, lightly funky yeast, and lots of clove. Light funk, clove, pepper and a sweet, malty finish. Medium body, modately high carbonation, and a dry finish. Not nearly as good as the Brux version, but interesting nonetheless.

Starts with a small dome head. Some ring lace, but it isn't consistent with each sip. The liquid is golden and clear.

Mostly lightly toasted barley malt aroma. Some pleasant, floral hop in the background. This comes across like a very well made pale ale.

The yeast comes through in the flavor...mildly. Otherwise, this is a fairly standard pale with that subtle twist. Decent middle-of-the-road body and carbonation. The finish is dry and bitter. The aftertaste lingers for a long time.

Was pleased to pick this up from a local L.A. bottle shop for $6.00; Mikkel is my favourite brewer in the world. Brewed/bottled at De Proef. 6.4% ABV confirmed. "Pale Ale." 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with yellow label and standard gold pressure cap served into an Oskar Blues pilsner glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are sky high given the brewer, but then again I've never had a great sour from him.

Imported by the Shelton Bastards. That explains the price tag.

Served straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a five finger beige colour head of nice cream and thickness, and very good (5+ minute) retention for the above average ABV. Body colour is a clear translucent pale copper. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Fair lacing as the head slowly recedes. The head isn't all that frothy, but frothiness isn't expected given the style. A good appearance, if not unique or special. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Sm: Bread dough, brettanomyces, pale malts, biscuit malt, light - very light - sourness, biscuity yeast, salt, wheat, muted dried fruits, and more bread. The bready/dough character is dominant. An intriguing, eclectic aroma of moderate strength. It's certainly different. I don't detect any alcohol.

T: Very bready, with notes of salt, pale malts, and biscuit malt dominating. Light clove. The salt is perfectly integrated; I've never even had a gose that used salt as well as this beer does. Clean and pleasant. I get very very little sourness, but it's well balanced and built for a pale ale with strange yeast. Yest character is only biscuity; there's no funkiness or sourness. One of the more complex pale ales I've had. It's nicely executed and brings a lot to the table. I don't know that I've ever had a beer quite like it. It's like a gose meets a bready pale ale. Has good body and flavour.

Mf: Soft, smooth, wet, chewy, and pleasant. Clean and enjoyable. Complements the flavour profile nicely. Refreshing.

Dr: The salt encourages the next sip, and the pale malts deliver refreshment. It's quite drinkable in that regard. I'd consider this a strangely brewed pale ale, and as such it's quite good. Is it worth $6.00 a bottle? Nah. I quite fancy it, but I doubt I'll be having it again. Still, at a lower price, it'd be a staple. A fantastic pale ale from Mikkeller that will undoubtedly be overlooked by many. I love the experimentation and the result is fantastic.

11.2 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a very lightly hazy orange yellow with a fizzy white head which leaves a modicum of lace.

S: Bready malt with notes of mushrooms and white pepper, yeasty, lightly floral.

T: Sourdough bread with a very light acidity. Floral and herbal notes. Saison/pale ale mix kind of feel.

M: Light-bodied, crisp, fairly clean, fizzy carbonation.

O: I like the experiment, just wish this wasn't so expensive since I'd like to try more of the series.

A: Pours a clear medium orangish copper in color with some very light amounts of visible carbonation and some orange + amber highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy off-white head that slowly reduces to a large patch of very thin film and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of barnyard funk are present from the brett yeast, there are lighter notes of earthiness. There is a touch of light citrus/lemon hops in the background which becomes noticeable as the beer warms up.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of caramel malt but there is not any sweetness present. That is followed by light notes of citrus/lemon hops and some moderate to strong amounts of barnyard funk and earthiness. There is a light amount of fruitiness that comes out as the beer warms. Light amounts of sourness/tartness and bitterness present in the finish.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: As someone that enjoys and appreciates some funkiness and brett in particular, I thought this was a really enjoyable beer that highlights that aspect of the beer without being overwhelming. Definitely a good way to understand what the brett yeast contributes to a beer.

330ml bottle from K&L Wine Merchants in Redwood City, CA. Tried alongside the Saison version and the Brett. bruxellensis.

Pours a quite clear orange-amber hue, with a reasonably full and frothy head of white that leaves some streaky lace. Body looks reasonably light, and doesn't actually hold a lot of carbonation. Overall, it looks reasonably good.

Nose has a sticky, plasticky tone to it, but it's extremely muted. Slight papery aroma, a little faint greenness, some herbal tones. Overall, though it's really quite weak. Having tried the brux version just before it, this seems tame and weak by comparison—perhaps it feels a little like some of the best characters from this are missing, and some of the aromas present here are best served when mixed with the brux.

Taste is clean and clear, with a decent green funk which sits on the middle of the palate. Mild carbonic-like acidity runs the length, and allows the beer to finish very cleanly on the back. Again, it feels like this is just filling in some holes in the brux. The acidity and cleanliness of it is actually very pleasant though: without a true puckering sour character, it remains very clean and drinkable.

Feel is light and dry. It matches the beer nicely, and provides a very pleasant drinkability to the brew.

Overall, yeah, I like this. It's a lot less complex and a lot less flavoursome than the brux version, but it's also a little cleaner, fresher and more drinkable. Together, I feel like they make a complete package.

Pours a medium copper color with a white soapy head and plenty of lacing. Aroma is bright and hoppy with a light white wine smell. In the taste, hoppy but with a firm tartness and more white wine elements. A fair amount of dry oak rounds it out. This is stronger in yeast driven tartness than the Bruxellinus version of this series. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation and dry. Nice funky ale. Hey baby, take a walk on the wild side.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy orange. Nice white head. Doesn't seem to have the retention that the other variants had. Lopsided chunky collar.

Smell - Very fruity. Tropical fruits, a touch of brett earthiness. Doughy malts.

Taste - More tropical fruit. Gives it a sweetness. Maybe that's malt. It does seem like it has a muddled and messy pale malt flavor. Hardly acidic at all, but the brett flavors build up along with a hop bitterness. Dries out and gets more bitter.

Mouthfeel - Feels heavy at first and then lightens out throughout the sip. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Not what I expected from something labeled Brettanomyces Lambicus. Not sour. I guess it might get more sour with age, but right now it's very fruity.
