A: 5 Pitch black with a light brown head. Super clean and uniform.

S: 4.25 Roasted malt, light coffee and caramel up front. A bit of vanilla shows up as the beer warms.

T: 4 At 55 degrees, there's lots of roasted malt with a smokey, soy sauce flavor. A bit of sweetness and caramel flavors follow as the beer warms, but roasted malt dominates with some bitterness. At almost room temperature, the flavor is more pleasant (less soy sauce), some chocolate lingers.

M: 4.5 Thick, creamy, and chewy. A little too much dryness at the end, bit overall quite nice.

O: 4.25 Like mikkeller's other barrel aged stouts, there's a bit too much roasted malt and not enough barrel character. The result is a slightly harsh beer without the interesting flavors and aromas of other beers in the same category.

This one pours an oily looking super dark black, with a non-existent head, and no lacing. This looks essentially still.

Smells like tons of cognac barrel, oak, booze soaked raisins, fudgy and syrupy chocolate, and hazelnut coffee.

I wish this had a bit more carbonation, as it would make the flavors absolutely pop. They are a little flat, because the beer is definitely basically flat, but what's here is quite complex. There's lot of cognac, it has completely transformed the base beer. The age on this bottle has basically negated the super roasty characteristics of the base beer. There is a huge tannic and vinous character, with lots of dark fruit and port, a bit of grape- I'm not sure if if it's the base beer, or the cognac itself. I like whatever it is. There's some vanilla too, and as it warms, the smallest hint of roasty malt.

This is thick, syrupy, and basically uncarbonated- this is the major downfall of this beer. It would be so much more punchy with any higher level of carbonation.

I definitely enjoyed this, but the lack of carbonation is disappointing.

Pitch black and completely opaque with a two finger frothy mocha head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention for style and ABV, coating the glass with streaks of soapy lacing. Very impressive looking.

Sweet boozy aroma with a really nice barrel character that's decently integrated into the stout characteristics. Lots of spirit/cognac along with some bourbon, toasted coconut, marshmallow and subtle charred oak/toothpick. Little bit of vanilla and the spirit really comes through without obliterating the stout characteristics. Underneath, there's a nice balance of roasted and silky malt sweetness. Gourmet coffee beans with bitter dark chocolate, oatmeal and burnt toast. Also some dessert-like sweetness with caramel, hazelnut and chocolate cake. Nice complexity and balance in the nose of this beer.

Slightly chewy/viscous full body with a flavor profile that's very similar to the aroma. Barrel is more subtle but the flavors are there and nicely integrated into the base. Very nice cognac/spirit flavor without being overly boozy or overpowering. Subtle dry oak along with coconut and vanilla bean. Slight creamy texture with the malt profile a bit weaker than expected. Subtle roast countered by very strong sweetness and boozy heat in the finish. Somewhat burnt dry malt flavor with deeply roasted coffee and roasted nut but the sweetness counters. Light chocolate, dark fruit, caramel and burnt sugar along with boozy heat in the finish. A bit hot for my liking but the high ABV is relatively well masked. Easier to drink after it warms. Nice barrel flavor that doesn't dominate letting the other flavors come through. Decent mouthfeel but it's too sweet and needs more roast for balance. Otherwise, this is another solid barrel aged beer from Mikkeller.

Pours black with a very dark tan head.
Nose shows heavy roasted malt, sultanas, rich dried fruit and booze.
More roast and booze as flavours along with some sweet bready malt, liquorice and cocoa.

A: Tar black and oily with a rusty tinge on the edges, no head whatsoever, stains the glass with a rusty black tinge.

S: Licorice as in the Dutch salty licorice, dark malts, big soy sauce like I’ve never seen before in a beer, a hit of alcohol and barely a touch of fruitiness.

T: Big chocolate, dark chocolate, a huge hit of soy sauce, then near the end a mocha coffee note that lingers on the tongue. Coffee wafer cookies is the sort of coffee quality that lingers. A little alcohol on the throat.

M: Thick, chewy, oily, very little carbonation, like almost nothing.

O: A masterpiece. Got this almost a year ago in Thailand, drank in Kunming January 26, 2015. Very complex, very interesting, a definite sipper. Glad it came in such a small bottle.
