Pours...oh dear...look at this head...like brown sugar if it had spent 2 weeks in the Bahamas then gone to a tanning salon...just marvellous

Nose shows fruity fusels, grain alcohol, more fruitiness. Vegemite! Coconut, intense booze...this beer does not come in peace. More soy milk.

Taste is a thick coconut milk fiesta...dry chocolate and soy.

Mouthfeel encourages reminiscence of chocolate milk.

A good beer, the Bourbon version made more of an impression on me...but I was naive back then. Like Black Buffalo, I feel this needs more time. For alcoholic soy lovers.

8.5 oz. bottle poured into a Teku snifter.

Appearance - Viscous black. Just a hint of a mocha head before it's only a collar. Very inky. Glass staining.

Smell - Fudge. Alcohol. Nice cognac aroma. Very roasty.

Taste - Ridiculously fudgy. Roasty. Vanilla and cognac. Strong alcohol. Very bitter chocolate and roasted coffee.

Mouthfeel - Hot. Barrel hot and the beer is boozy. Low carbonation.

Overall - Big beer but quite tasty. Cognac is such a great barrel.

First off, when I poured this I immediately knew it was going to be crazy. It pours thick and black like really old used motor oil. I’ve had some heavy stouts but this literally poured like something much more viscous than beer. Kind of insane really.

The nose has a ton of bitter dark chocolate, a somewhat fruity booziness, red grapes, some caramel and oak, dates, figs, molasses, a slight bit of smokey charred notes (almost like charcoal), and a thread of something I can only describe as “old, used leather”. It reminds me of these driving gloves my mom used to have when I was a little kid. That sounds really weird as a descriptor for beer but its not a bad thing. It smells like that in the best way possible. Its hard to describe.

The taste is just as burly as expected. Massive amounts of really dark, bittersweet chocolate and a fruity, bitter booze make up the base of flavor in this brew. A myriad of other flavors fly across the tastebuds, darting in and disappearing just as quickly in some cases. Grapes, dates, cherries, currants, smoke, charred oak, coffee, roasted malts, hints of anise, molasses and some burnt brown sugar. I’ve mentioned the boozey flavors, but its not boozey in the sense that its hot and too alcoholic to drink. The booze just creates an astringent, heating sensation across the tongue and down into the belly before fading away. The body is (obviously) very full with a definite chewy, viscous mouthfeel. There is some carbonation but it is almost not present.

This is another excellent barrel aged stout from Mikkeller. I loved his cognac barrel aged Beer Geek Brunch Weasel (made with Kopi Lowak civet coffee) but this is a whole other beast. That was a funky but delicious and sweet stout, this is just a solid, tastebud crushing, palate challenging, burly, oily, delicious imperial stout. For $15 per 8.5 oz bottle it should be and I’m glad it didn’t disappoint.

A: black. Thick foamy head that is brown to black in hue.

S: raisin. Fig. Vanilla.

T: um...fig, raisin, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, whiskey, balanced by warm alcohol tones.

M: low carbonation. Thick. Smooth. Creamy.

O: not sure how to put this. I don't like barrel aged beers. But this beer is fan-fucking-tastic.

8.5 ounce bottle. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours very dark brown/black with a thin dark brown head that fizzled away quickly. There's a small amount of lacing. The brew smells like dark fruit, roasted/burnt malt, booze (cognac), and bittersweet chocolate. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, except with the addition of some milk chocolate, coffee, and molasses. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy and has moderate carbonation. I think it's a good brew, but at $15.99 for that little bottle I wouldn't buy it again at that price. With that being said, I think it's definitely worth trying.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a small dark brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of slightly sweet black chocolate notes with some light Cognac notes and light roasted notes. Taste is a great mix between some nice creamy black chocolate notes with some Cognac notes and some light roasted malt notes with well-rounded finish. Body is full with nice creamy body and good carbonation with no alcohol being easily discernible. Very fine used of barrel-aging to smoothed out any rough edges of base beer.

Poured into a Due South Brewing Co. snifter. No freshness date

A- From a heavy pour comes an intensely thick motor oil black body with a ¼ inch dark brown head that retains a bit before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and spotty surface foam. Resilient specs of lacing trickle slowly down the glass.

S- Boozy aroma with lots of barrel presence. Sweet and you can even sense some herbal hops beneath the heavy roasted malt.

T- Deep roastiness plus lots of hop bitterness that meld together decently while the oak hangs back but is still solid. Also slightly sweet. Alcohol certainly makes itself known but isn't overly astringent. Notes of vanilla, dark chocolate and a bit of nuttiness.

M- Sticky but still slick and semi-creamy. Medium-low carbonation and a super robust body.

O- While it's not the best barrel-aged offering I've had from Mikkeller, it's still very enjoyable and nuanced.

Drank from an oversized wine glass

A - Pours a thick black colour with an oily appearance. The head is deep tanned one fingered that reduces to a film

S - Powerful Vanilla, Cognac, brown sugar, molasses, caramel/toffee and wood. Awesome

T - Well some nice Vanilla flavours, complimented by some burnt sugar, caramel/toffee. The Cognac really comes in a the end with a warm booztyness that is not offensive at all and does not compromise the well hidden ABV.

M - Perfect. Full stop. Silky and Milky and full. I have had ice cream with less viscosity than this.

O - This is a supremely complex beer. The balance here is extremely impressive indeed. This beer packs a real punch and leaves you wanting a whole lot more. Would benefit from a little ageing but drinking now will not disappoint at all. One of the best beers that I have had to date.
