look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4

8oz bottle I snagged at some point last year. Poured into a matching Mikkeller teku and drank along side the calvados and bourbon versions. The brew appears black in color with a dark mocha brown head that displays stunning retention. Some patchy to spotty lacing effect sticks to the glass.

The aroma contains notes of deep roast, char, cocoa, minerals and fruit almost like raison meets molasses. Some wood elements are present towards the back but without being told this is cognac, you really cant tell.

The taste includes plenty of roasty char, espresso-like bitterness and earthen elements with a bold accent of solvent alcohol thats lightly fruity. Some raw oakiness provides a neutral barrel feel towards the back with some anise characteristics.

This is rich - full bodied with moderate carbonation. Quite a creamy feel with barrel nuance that isnt really that identifiable and the alcohol gets solvent, not really spirit influenced that much. When I had the bourbon version of George 3 years ago, it was far and away the greatest thing to ever have the Mikkeller name on it. Kinda sad to see the cognac and calvados versions do not live up to that standard.

A: black. Thick foamy head that is brown to black in hue.

S: raisin. Fig. Vanilla.

T: um...fig, raisin, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, whiskey, balanced by warm alcohol tones.

M: low carbonation. Thick. Smooth. Creamy.

O: not sure how to put this. I don't like barrel aged beers. But this beer is fan-fucking-tastic.

look: 5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

A: 5 Pitch black with a light brown head. Super clean and uniform.

S: 4.25 Roasted malt, light coffee and caramel up front. A bit of vanilla shows up as the beer warms.

T: 4 At 55 degrees, there's lots of roasted malt with a smokey, soy sauce flavor. A bit of sweetness and caramel flavors follow as the beer warms, but roasted malt dominates with some bitterness. At almost room temperature, the flavor is more pleasant (less soy sauce), some chocolate lingers.

M: 4.5 Thick, creamy, and chewy. A little too much dryness at the end, bit overall quite nice.

O: 4.25 Like mikkeller's other barrel aged stouts, there's a bit too much roasted malt and not enough barrel character. The result is a slightly harsh beer without the interesting flavors and aromas of other beers in the same category.
