Served from a 375 capped bottle into an Allagash chalice. 2012 vintage. Aged in Sauternes barrels. Cellar temp.

Appearance- Clear golden color with big three finger bubly head that left some lacing.

Smell-Strong and funky. Lots of Lemon, vinager, limes, funky yeast, grapes, oak.

Taste- Sauternes barrel is totally there. Super buttery and grapey, but with a nice balence of tartness. Grapes, lemons, yeast, pear. Not overly sour like the smell suggested, but well balanced tartness and buttery oakieness.

Mouthfeel- Highly carbonated but light bodied. Juicy start, then finishes dry. Medium tartness.

Overall- Really nice surprise.

Bottle poured into a Sam Adams/ Weihenstephan Infinium flute.

A -Pours a hazy golden hue with with a slight tint of orange. The head shoots up the glass and dissipates fairly quickly but not all the way. It settles into a quarter inch white head and leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom.

S - Sour right off the bat. The earth tones really light this one up. Some funk and reminiscent of some saisons sans the cringing sourness.

T- Lemon and sour citrus with some very ripe light fruit. Apple and some sour grapes. You can taste the barrels that it was aged in as well which gives it a pleasant woody taste too.

M - High carbonation with a dry, crisp finish.

D - I really really liked this mikkeller gueze. I don't drink them too often but I would definitely recommend this to the sour lovers out there.

2012 vintage.

When the bottle was opened there was a brief hiss, and the air filled with an intense skunk. Unfortunate, although the green bottle sure didn't help any. After 10-15 minutes, this dissipated and there was a more familiar farmhouse funk and wild yeast aroma akin to Cantillon. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if they cultured and pitched dregs from Cantillon bottles in this. Light aromas of cheese rind, damp wood, and soft lemon pith. It's pretty spot on in similarity to lambic, and there's little to no Sauternes character to it which was sort of a letdown. Clarity was fairly bright, carbonation was rapid, and there was a thin layer of crackling foam on the surface, depositing bits of lace here and there. Taste was bright and relatively sour, puckering lemony citrus and light dry oakiness round it out nicely. Overall it is worth a try, though miscategorized as a Gueuze.

12.7 ounce bottle, dated 2012 on label. Served in a tulip, the beer pours a hazy gold color with an inch and a half off-white head. The head lasts a little while, but there isn't much of any lacing at all. The brew smells like white grapes/wine, oak, funk, hay, and some apple. Taste is nice and tart, it tastes like oak, funk, white grapes/wine, hay, and some earthiness and vinegar. Mouthfeel/body is medium, with a moderate amount of carbonation. I like this beer overall, but it's not one of my favorite gueuzes. $15.99 a bottle.

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin white head that died down a bit and left nearly an entire layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: Strong aromas of barnyard funk are present in the nose.
T: Much like the smell, the taste is very funky and also has light bits of sourness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and quite tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is beer that has an acquired taste and might take some people to get used to, but delivers lots of funk both in the smell and taste.

Now called Spontansauternes. Haven't done any research, so don't know if the barrel has changed.

Bright and clear straw gold with a towering white head that falls almost as quickly as it rises. Hapahzard lacing and a raised collar. Vigorous bead.

Begins with raw gueuze notes of green capsicum, sweaty blue cheese and bitter grapefruit peel. At first the barrel serves mainly to smooth out the edges, but later the fruity Sauternes character and light buttery oak manifests itself.

The barrel is more restrained in the taste. The base gueuze is nothing to quibble about, but there's not quite enough from the barrel to transform the flavour profile.

The mouthfeel also indicates that there's very little barrel in this. Quite aggressive, all the way through to the finish, much like a conventional gueuze.

Hints at being great but doesn't get there. With more time in the barrel it could be really something. In this regard, the Bruery sour range is kicking goals.

12.7 ounce bottle, dated 2012. "A sour ale aged in sauternes barrels".

A: Pours a slightly hazy sunburst orange with streaming carbonation yielding a 2-inch rocky white head which leaves rings, spots and clumps of lace.

N: Funky barnyard, lemony, herbal/grassy/hay mix, earthy and mushroomy, slightly sour.

T: Vinous and mildy spicy, musty, cheesy and yeasty.

M: Medium body and full prickly carbonation. Dry, vinous and sour finish.

O: Sour + sweet + spicy + vinous = nice and enjoyable.

Appearance: Pretty standard look. Bubbly head of about a finger on the pour. Little to no head retention. Slightly cloudy golden orange color to this brew.

Smell: Bright exotic yeast aroma mixes very well with the sweet white wine additions from the Sauternes barrels. The carbonation is active and noticeable in the aroma with the feeling of champagne. Lasting aroma of grapes and mild bready yeast are remembered.

Taste: Very active carbonation and sour grapes greet the palate. The body is a funky yeast character with an overpowering white wine sweetness. The back end and finish is very dry but continues to having a lasting grape sweetness left on the tongue. I like this, but the wine characteristics are too strong IMO, loses that funky yeast we all love about Gueuze.

Mouthfeel: Interesting transitions of levels of this beer, but comes on too hard with the sweet tones.

Overall: A good beer but there is no doubt the Sauternes barrels take this beer over. Not as much of the tartness I hoped for. Highly recommend for a wine fan looking for a beer to their liking.

Label notes : 2012 bottle, sour ale aged in sauternes barrels. Updated from a 4 'Had' rating.

Appearance - Pour to a Fantome tulip glass. Color is pumpkin orange and initially translucent but the final pour gives it some haze. White head huge at first, eventually falling to a partial cap.

Smell - Could smell it upon opening. Nice funky farm cheese notes, oak, granny smith apples, a nice sour kick and light sweetness .

Taste - A bit tamer on the sour funk with a little more of the Sauternes coming through. A little more fruity overall with peaches and green grape coming to mind. Oak and farm are also prevalent, some bread and buttery tones, slight white wine vibe from the barrel.

Mouthfeel - A little hefty for the ABV, high-ish carbonation but fine here. Sourness is actually somewhat easygoing for a gueuze.

Overall - Good, though the Sauternes barrel is pretty mild overall, and the beer itself is as well, for a gueuze anyway.
