330ml bottle poured into tulip 28/6/13

A very hazy golden orange, looks like juice and not enough clarity to see many bubbles but I know there's some hiding because there's a well sustained thumbs width of foam that leaves some random lace

S almost smells like fruli with some pineapple and orange, quite fruity and smells like fake synthetic fruit candy, hard to believe this isn't a fruit beer, some earthy grains and leafy forest work well for it

T some herbal spicy notes on top of what I smell but I'm not getting as much of the almost too real fruity notes, still tastes solid but the nose has the edge

M medium bodied and a little over carbonated and airy, the fruity notes are lost on the finish just a little rind that wasn't really there elsewhere

O massive nose and other then the feel its solid, very interesting brew and I'm surprised how fruity this one is from hop alone

worth a try and the single hop works well on its own, I might buy another just to familiarize myself with the hop and I'll be waiting for more belma in the future

330ml bottle. Brewed at De Proef Brouwerij in Belgium, with only Belma hops, which are obviously new-ish, and purportedly very fruity.

This beer pours a very hazy, medium golden yellow colour, with three fingers of tightly foamy, somewhat creamy bone-white head, which leaves one broad swath of leaning deciduous tree lace around the glass as it very slowly ebbs away. Very bottle-conditioned looking.

It smells of orange and grapefruit rind, pineapple and guava, a hint of juicy strawberry and musty cantaloupe, peppery yeast, grainy semi-sweet pale malt, and a touch of piney leafiness. The taste is quite fruity up front - orange, pineapple, ruby red grapefruit, and underripe honeydew - with some spicy yeast, a middling pale malt backbone, and a rather understated bitterness, which is apparently left in the hands of an astringent leafy, piney hoppiness.

The bubbles are fairly understated, small, and nonthreatening, the body an adequate medium weight, and just a little too acerbic to be deemed outright smooth. It finishes off-dry, the fruitiness of the guest star hop nudging out its inherent bitterness, all other things being equal.

A rather nice, slightly Belgian-tinted single-hop IPA, the Belma varietal seeming to have the chutzpah to cover an entire beer. No one-sided notes here, just a well-rounded, increasingly drinkable little science experiment.
