Mikkeller unleashes a new round of Spontaneous Series beers in 2013. Among them – SpontanRosehip. A rosehip is the fruit of the rose plant uses in various culinary recipes, but can be eaten raw. The flavor? Citrusy and of course, floral. The base beer a lambic, fermented in oak. SpontanRosehip will join SpontanElderflower, SpontanPeach and SpontanGooseberry.

Bottle from West Lakeview Liquors. Served in my Funky Buddha snifter.

A - White foam quickly settles to a thin collar and wisps, with minimal lace left behind. Murky orange peach juice body.

S - Smells like lambic, but with floral notes and a touch of raspberry that I take to be the rose hips. Lactic acidity, a bit of stone fruit in the periphery. Quite nice actually; I'd probably guess framboise in a blind tasting.

T - The taste isn't quite as strong, as it loses a lot of the 'fruit' flavor. Mostly lactic acidity, slight mineral, a bit of medicinal brett, and a touch of earthiness; fairly middle of the road in flavor balance and mildly evocative of Boon. Actually, wouldn't be surprised if that was the lambic used in the newer batch of these Spontan- variants.

M - Medium body, lower moderate carbonation, and super dry, with that lingering mouth-coating candy vibe. As usual, well-hidden alcohol on these beers; would guess it's 6% lambic more often than not. Some acidity builds, but it's not excessive.

D - The aroma is really unique and compelling, but the flavor is kind of generic for the style; that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not a very good value for the price tag. Easily put down a 375ml on my own, but probably won't pick this one up again with a number of better options out there.

The colour is red-brown, the liquid is cloudy. It looks like a diluted rosehip soup. The low head is white, it leaves some lacing.

The smell is sourish. Notes of dry apple cider, unsweetened rosehip powder. Iodine and iron. Floral notes of hibiscus twigs.

The taste starts lambic-sour. Iodine and minerals. Unsweetened rosehip soup. The flavours of the lambic and the fruit are well integrated. Hibiscus and apple acid in the aftertaste, as well as some sweetness. The tart flavours stick to the teeth. Rosehip infusion and iodine in the finish.

The carbonation is strong, the bubbles mid-sized. The liquid is a bit sticky and farinaceous.

I think that the spontan-series beers so far has been quite uneven, but this one is clearly one of the better as the tart rosehips enhances the flavours from the beer much more than the sweeter fruits (strawberries, mango...) does.

Bottle from Tipples poured to a tulip glad. Pours murky orange colored with a bubbly half finger slightly off white head. Beautiful sweet rose aroma, sour cherries, some citrus fruit, sour vinegar notes, dry oak and vinous notes as well. The flavor is big sourness with the rose hips providing a big floral sweetness, some tropical fruit and cherry-like notes, dry oak finish. A bit of yeasty funky Brett influence. Really nice flavor. Pretty full medium plus mouthfeel, heavy for a sour brew, with prickly carbonation. Better than my overall score notes because it is pretty ugly. Recommended for sure. Not sure why everyone is so down on this. If the bottle said Cantillon it would probably be nearing the mid-4's for the rAvg. This is better than the score, which was brought down due to the ugly appearance.
