11.2oz bottle, poured into an unlabeled snifter on 9/25/2013. Going off some scribbled notes and memory.
Pours pitch black, very opaque. A small bit of mocha coloured head that dissipates fast, leaving pretty much nothing. No lacing, no nothing. It's just a fairly average looking stout.
However, the nose is exploding with raw vanilla. There are hints of coffee and roast malts, but the nose is so dominated by vanilla and a little bit of booze. This is really something.. I don't think I've smelled this much dominant vanilla, not even in Vanilla Bean Dark Lord for example.
Now this is weird. There is so, so, so much coffee in the first couple of ounces that I drink. So much bitter espresso with alcohol.. with absolutely nothing else. I was confused at first. But after a few ounces and some time to warm up, there is a crapton of raw vanilla that comes to take over that coffee. It doesn't completely take the coffee over, but it is incredibly strong. Ridiculous. At room temperature, its a perfect blend of coffee and vanilla. There isn't a whole lot of room for the underlying malts, actually, which I guess is what Mikeller was going for.
Now this is a thick-ass bodied stout. One of the thickest I've seen. Decent carbonation. Smooth, but definitely a sipper. Not much booziness which is awesome.
Lots of vanilla. Lots of coffee. Not much else. That's what Mikeller is all about- over the top. But not a lot of balance. I wish there was more complexity, but what the hell, this beer is called a Vanilla Shake. You are definitely getting what you are buying here! Definitely worth trying once, especially if you like vanilla.

Served from bottle in a TG snifter
Pours deep dark brown with a thin half finger bubbly ecru head with min retention, moderate lacing.
Smells like a vanilla candle, pretty awesome, with a touch of booze and flaked oats on the nose. Taste starts with candi sweetness, strong vanilla notes, almost overpowering, with delightful oatmeal cleansing the palate and moderate warming booze that finishes the journey.
Very pleasant smooth, creamy, almost near watery body with moderate etoh.
Amazing strongly vanilla forward oatmeal stout with a great mouthfeel. Not worth $15 to buy another one at only 12oz but great to try once. You buy, and I will drink it....

It doesn't appear to be much out of the ordinary. It's thick and black, and by thick and black, I mean really thick and really black. It's liquid coal. The head is a bit lacking, somewhat a given considering the strength, but it's brown bubbles with little retention and no lacing.
Everything in the nose is fairly subdued and non-aggressive. Vanilla, roasted malts, toffee and chocolate are present and accounted for, but again, they show restraint.
The taste is awfully good. With the vanilla and sweet chocolate, it resembles a strong milk stout. With your eyes closed, you can see the vanilla shake being portrayed.
Extremely smooth and creamy. A bit sweet. Some heat from the ABV. While creamy, still just a bit grainy due to the high malt bill. Only when it's too warm does the heat from the ABV work the throat a bit too much. Full bodied and then some. Goes down a little too easy.
Overall, it's pretty spectacular. It's really just what I'm looking for, being a fan of the dark, chewy stuff.
