Pours dark and opaque with a rather attractive brown head.

Nose has a European feel to it, I think it's the yeast. Chocolatey and milky, maybe a hint of licorice and raisin with a fruity yeast note lying underneath.

The palate is where it fell apart for me. Starts out chalky and metallic, which I have to say faded into a better mouthfeel later on. Suprisingly fruity with stout notes only in the background. Finishes chocolatey and dry.

Once it opened up it got substancially better and very drinkable. In the meantime though, i'm in no hurry to pick up more.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 11.2oz bottle into a pint glass. There is no freshness date on the bottle.

Appearance: The body has a nice dark chocolaty brown color with a light brown, chocolate milk shake like head on top. The head has very good retention makes tons of thick light brown lacing on the glass.

Smell: Its aroma has a mix of leafy hops, minerals and smoky roasted grain.

Taste/Mouth Feel: The flavor has hints of coffee with cream, some smoke, sweet roasted gain, leafy hops and a light dusting of dark coco powder. It has a nice medium body with a silky smooth texture and soft carbonation. It is slick but not overly thick or cloying at all.

Notes: There is a lot of flavor packed into this little beer that has only 3.8%abv. This could be a nice dark session beer.

This was an interesting brew. Got it into the store, because I was interested in it due to the fact that it's from Malta, a small island off of Italy which was once inhabited and controlled by the British. However, once the British left, Farson's came out with its very one Farson's Lacto Milk Stout.

It's nice to learn history.

Imported by B United, Farsons Milk Stout deserves to be purchased at least once.

It pours a dark chocolatey brown. With a tan mocha like head. It looks like a dark chocolate milk with foam. The smell is of milk chocolate, and maybe a subtle note of fruit.

The taste is not as sweet as I thought it was going to be, a nice dense mouthful, but not heavy. I really enjoyed this brew.

It reminds me of a low alcohol beverage that tastes pretty good, and hits the spot when you want it.

This is a pretty good beer.

Kudos to Malta.

Undated 11.2 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Despite a rather vigorous pour, only enough head was generated to barely cover the top, and this disappeared rapidly. A very dark brown liquid, a bit hazy, with a tan head.

Aroma: a spicy smell (hops?) of hops and malt. Smells sweet.

Tastes sweet too, at first, giving the initial but momentary impression of being way too sweet. but then some bittering hops kick in towards the finish to provide a good sweet/bitter balance. Nice flavor effect, even if the flavor is not good until the finish.

M: under carbonated and a tad watery.

O - an interesting brew worth seeking out as a novelty. A bit different from other milk stouts I've tried. Good dessert beer.

Picked this up at Five Points Bottle in Athens, GA.

Pours a very dark brown color with a one-finger tan head. The head recees into a wispy layer on top leaving almost no lacing.

Smells of nondescript sweet fruits with hints of caramel malts.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Sweet fruit flavors up front backed up by light malt flavors. There's a very light milk-sugar flavor that comes in at the end.

Mouthfeel is alright. It's got a surprisingly smooth thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is not so great - I'll finish this beer, but I won't like it.

Overall this beer only slightly resembles a milk stout. Really not worth a shot - unless you're excited about a beer from Malta.

Black in colour, with an orange/brown coloured lasting head. Aroma is lightly raisiny, lightly roasty, failry light in general. Palate is sweetish, lightly roasty, lightly raisiny, slightly roasty bitterness, nice soft mouthfeel, shies away from being sweet and cloying like Mackeson Stout for example. I'm glad i got to try this classic milk stout, even if it wasn't anything special, pretty decent though.

A- The dark dense black body lets a soft glow of brown in at the base. There is a thin bubbly tan head that is gone before the first sip. The beer is a bit too dense to see any sign of carbonation.

S- The soft soapy aroma has some cola qualities to it but no roasted malt noticed.

T- The slightly tart flavor has some cherry qualities to it with a watery cola note to follow and a roasted malt note hint at the finish.

M- The light mouthfeel is slightly watery in texture with no alcohol heat noticed.

O- After pouring the glass, I read "with caramel color" on the label. It made me nervous that someone would actually advertise that. I would call this a diet stout, it is thin and watery with very little flavor. It was a let down.

11.2oz bottle. Caramel colour added to a milk stout? Uh oh…

I can trace my paternal heritage back a few hundred years, and it stops with this little island, merged with that other little island, Eire.

This beer pours a solid black, with slight cola edges, and one skinny finger of foamy milk chocolate brown head, which settles quickly, leaving some random specked streaks of lace around the glass in the process. It smells of sweet caramel malt, milk, fermented red grape juice, and leafy hops. The taste is stale cider-soaked bready malt, yeast, warm milk, and a little bit of chocolate coffee. The carbonation is very sedate, but with a weird little tongue tingling after a spell, the body medium weight, but in a squishy fruit manner, smoothness defined in an equal manner. It finishes with an airiness, aged black fruit dancing about, tartness coming and going.

Well, a strange old bat, this one. Stout characteristics get pushed aside in favour of weird amber ale off-flavours. Could be an age issue – as there's no date info on the bottle, but then again, maybe it's just that I’ve never had a Mediterranean milk stout before.

i guess you have to know how to pour a stout to get it to show it's potential. pretty active dark cocoa nib head stays lively, lacing nicely and thick with a large sudsy, tight island remaining for some time.

nose is a slightly sharp sweetness, dried dark fruit, vanilla. for an incredibly low ABV, this smells a bit like a liqueur. interesting.

i see alot of poor reviews but trying to keep it objective.

yeah, there's the average (or less?!) aspect...something not melded here...interesting in that it would be perhaps a really refreshing deep summer dark brew...not bad at all (at first), but mouthfeel is very thin, finish is too dry and fast...the flavor is actually full-bodied for a split second, but it fades and seems imbalanced. the sweetness would actually make this not as enjoyable and just cloying had it lingered. so there's something positive. don't let it warm up!

in a sense, a drinkable brew, but for it's price (!) and low ABV, i don't know.

A frothy, deep orange-brown head rises majestically over the almost completely opaque black-brown body as your pour. Only a sliver of glimmering deep mahogany can be seen at the base of the glass when you hold it to the light.

As you nose the glass you pick up a thread of sharp fruit (some berries, some citrus, some tropical) and some mild leafy hops mixed amidst its sweetish caramel malt.

The body is medium and supple with a fine-bubbled, moderate carbonation that leaves it remarkably smooth across the palate.

The flavor is as the nose suggests, with more citrusy, tropical fruit (even some papaya) and a distinct tea-like quality to the hops. It's caramelish, and mildly sweet; and not particularly chocolatey or roasty at all. The bitterness is restrained, but present, and it finishes drying with some lingering caramel, lactose, yeasty fruitiness, and leafy bitterness.

It's interesting to a certain extent, and it continues to evolve a bit throughout the serving, but it's not particularly rich - full flavored, yes, but rich, no. That does lend it some drinkability, however, although the residual "sticky" lactose and twig-like bitterness do hinder the otherwise smooth and caramel-fruity finish. Very "English" in character. Worth trying.

Maybe I had a bad bottle. There was one dusty bottle of this at a grocery in St. Julian's, Malta. I wanted to sample each of the Farson's brews so this went in the cart along with some Cisk and Hopleaf. The beer poured out like chocolate syrup with a fairly wimpy head. It smelled simply awful, like it had gone bad long ago. Still I decided to taste it. True to form it was way too thick and while flavorful, it wasn't a flavor I want to be too verbose. I couldn't get the whole bottle down and felt slightly ill for an hour after.

Appearance-Black brown and almost totally impermeable to light. Moderate medium dark tan head shows ddecent retention and some nice lacing.

Aroma-Interesting toasted malt aroma, with slight caramel, and some nutty notes-probably from oxidation (age). Slight coffee creamer aroma and a touch of raisins as well. The nutty malt aroma reminds me more of a nut brown ale than a stout, but that can probably be partially blamed on the fact that a low gravity import beer is not likely to wear it's age very well, and I'm not quite sure how long this sat on the shelf before I picked it up. That said, even if I look beyond the stale malt notes, there's really not any roast to speak of here.

Flavor-Sweet, bland, and somewhat one dimensional. Tastes like milk sugar, with background notes of toasted bread, nuts, and caramel covered raisins. A bit cloying, and still semi-sweet in the finish.

Mouthfeel-Medium light body with moderately low carbonation. It does seem to get a little bit of a body boost from the milk sugar, but not as much as I would expect/hope. Ends up kind of thin and a bit unpleasant.

It's hard to say if this would be better fresh, but it's not very good in it's current state. One dimensional and too sweet in it's milk sugar/caramel/coffee creamer flavor. The caramel and dark fruit flavors achieved by the caramel malts used are not bad, but the lack of any real roast flavor is a deal breaker for me.

Pours a dark brown, near black. A fairly brisk pour yielded only about 1 finger thick of brown head. Head is bubbly and almost kind of creamy looking. Head came across as a bit lacking in general. mild lacing.

Aroma and taste are down right mediocre. Malt and...maybe caramel? Perhaps a slight bit of brown sugar in the nose. But no hints of coffee, chocolate, hops...nothing. Just a bland sweetness. Yuck. But hey, at least it's not cloying.

Mouthfeel is fairly light for the style...maybe a notch below medium overall. Watery. Carbonation is appropriate.

Not a good stout. Might be a decent entry stout for a person that's a bit intidimated by the style, because there's nothing even remotely challenging at play here. This was a drain pour for me - not because it was so bad that I couldn't drink it, but simply because it was just a waste of stomach space.

330ml brown bottle without dating.

Pours deep brown with red edges. An inch of tan head quickly dissolves, leaving a small film and fingers of lace. Smells rather peculiar for a sweet stout. There's some sweet malt aroma at first, but it gets overshadowed by stewed vegetables and cheap euro-lager skunkiness. Flavor is entirely missing in action. Liquid creamed corn with a touch of skunk and lactic smoothness. Limp and thin body with almost no carbonation. Avoid this one.

[edit] I read the other reviews after posting mine. AndoBrew is exactly right. This tastes something like dirty coins smell.

Farson's Lacto pours up with a modest carbonation that creates a small brownish-khaki colored head that maintains above the deep reddish brown-nearly black body. Head retention is surprisingly good! The aroma is very sweetish e.g. Malta Goya with hints of burnt molasses, caramel syrup & damp fallen leaves. Oxididation doesn't help. The flavor is very one-dimensional with a light sweetness & subdued roastiness that creates an off-dry, slightly sulphery finish. This light-medium bodied lager lacks substance, but easy to finish & move on! This Maltese lager needs more lacto & stout!

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smells of malt with some hints of caramel. Taste is mild, malty and just a bit bitter. Feels creamy in the mouth. Not really a beer I could spend the whole evening drinking. Overall this is a pretty decent beer.

Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with a small brown head which doesn't stay around for very long. The aroma isn't too strong at all, it smells mostly like roasted malt, grain, and some milk chocolate. It tastes like milk chocolate, grain, and malted milk balls (candy), but there's also a slight sour bittersweeet aftertaste. Mouthfeel is light/medium, a bit on the watery side. Drinkability is OK, it's not hard to drink but it isn't exactly easy to drink either. Overall it's just an average beer all the way around. It's not a stout that I'd seek out, but if someone gave me one I'd drink it. If anything, try it just so you can say you've had a beer from Malta.

12oz bottle into pint glass.

Deep black with some ruby red toward the bottom edges of the glass. A thin bubbly rim forms from a thin head.

Very faint roasty grains with a little bit of caramel in there.

Almost flavorless. I can actually taste the lactose that was added (if that's even what they did). Either way, this beer has "hints" of milk. Thin bodied with low carbonation. The finish is lingering grainy milk flavors.

The oddest thing about this beer is that on the label it says, "Caramel color added." Why would you add coloring to a black beer? Anyways, that coloring may have provided the only flavor in this beer. The one good thing, with a 3.4% ABV this beer is extremely sessionable. I'd say if I was stuck in Malta (an absolutely gorgeous island) and could only drink this beer, I don't think I would complain too much. But stateside, I wouldn't recommend it at all.

A: Looks fine. Nothing wrong in this department.

S: Metal and prunes. Really dislike the metallic element.

T: Tastes like sweet prune water with shoe polish mixed in. Also some wood shavings.

M: Creamy and watery, if that's possible.

O: Not awful but below average.

A – Almost 1 finger of tan head which reduced to a thin layer quickly but stuck to the glass, beer is a very dark brown 3.5
S – Dark roasted caramel malts, sweet cream, herbal overtones 3.5
T – An odd bitter herbalness permeates this brew, semi-sweet malts, more herbal than expected, light body and slightly dry/mineral, a very drinkable beer but not one I’m enjoying the taste of too much, dark but not a stout in my book 2.5
M – Thin watery and light, very un-stout like 2
O – If a very light thinner session stout is your target, this may work for you. Not what I was hoping for and I will not be revisiting this brew. 2.5
