taste: citrus, coriander, wheat,

Appalachian : Mad Cameron Belgian White

Pours a bright hazed yellow. Aroma of wheat, lemon, and allspice. In the flavor, coriander, nutmeg, and lemony wheat. Quite spicy for an ale so light bodied. Finishes clean with pepper and clove on the palate. An aggressively spiced Belgian wit, and a pretty decent one at that.

Time to bring this brew out of retirement. This is the new July specialty brew at ABC.

"A hint of coriander and orange peel in the nose complements the typical white beer fruitiness. A nice, dry, and slightly acidic finish is carried nicely by an elevated effervescence. When "Mad" precedes the name of a town or village in Europe, the area is known for its water quality. The Dehart Dam nestled in the Appalachian Mountains provides the Appalachian Brewing Company with city water that has a proper mineral makeup and pH that makes it perfect for brewing."

This revamped release comes in at 5.5% abv and 16 ibus. Served on tap at the Harrisburg location in an oversized mug, this brew appears a hazed straw yellow color. A finger of white head appears across the top and emits patchy, leggy lace across the glassware. The head dissolves quite fast. A swirl revives a bit of head but not enough to produce more than a lacing across the top.

The smell of this brew is like lemon grass, coriander and some citrus minorly like orange peel. Sulfur is quite prominent throughout along with a bready grain sweetness. Not a bad smelling brew but the sulfur is out of place and off-putting. As it warms up, clove comes out and I get the impression that this brew is just overdone with the spices. Instead of subtle and easy approaching, this is almost imperialized and exaggerated with the extra additives.

The taste is like lemon grass and coriander with an unexpected amount of oily bitterness for the style. A pepper flavoring is included which really throws a mix into the experience. A light grainy feel of neutral flavoring is present before some indications of clove, banana and perfume bitterness of lemon and clove overtake the experience.

This is a light bodied brew with a modest to light amount of carbonation. This is an ok attempt at the style but I had a hard time finishing my glass. It just seems all over the place and doesn't quite come together. I think they are trying a bit too hard with this one. I would not have this again if given a choice.

A pint glass served at the Harrisburg brewery.

A; The ale has a hazy pale yellow color, as though a golden ale were sunbleached and lightened. There was a finger's worth of head nestled with an orange wedge when the glass was served. Both quickly disappeared.

S: The nose is a deep enjoyable blend of spices and malt. The biscuity body nicely supports the curacao and coriander aromas.

T: The body of the ale is light and refreshing. Spices really carry the taste, kicking up curacao orange sweetness and peppery coriander zest. Those spices are nicely paired with a biscuity base whose dryness nicely accentuates the sweetness of the spices.

M: The witbier flavors are strong, vibrant and very easy on the palate. Even with an orange wedge, the flavor is pleasing.

D: The ale is easy to drink and has a light enough abv that it is perfect for a warm summer day.

The beer pours a gold color with a thick frothy white head that quickly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a nice wheaty scent that seems a bit fruity and dry. There also seems to be a bit of spice and lemony zest as well. The taste is good also. It has a light wheat flavor that is a bit dry and citrusy. It goes down easy and finishes fruity with Belgian yeast. The mouthfeel is good. It is a low bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a fine witbier. It has excellent aroma and drinkability.

This beer poured a lemony yellow color that was opaque in the glass. It produced a white head that was fairly thin that lasted for a few moments then settled to a thin ring on the edges. It produced a spotty lace that seemed to cling and stretch to nothing. The aromas were of hops, spices (coriander), and citrus fruit (oranges, grapefruit, lemon). The aroma was fairly light and subtle. The flavors were of citrus (orange, grapefruit, lemon), spices (coriander), yeast, hops, and sweet malt in the back of the mouth. It left a light hop aftertaste that had hints of pine to it as well. This beer was light to medium bodied and not overly complex. This beer was on the dry side but not overly done, clean and refreshing. Fairly decent and would make a good session beer. It is also makes a decent summer time beer.
