Filled up a growler with this beer.

Golden amber color with bright white head and lacing that fades quickly.

Not a whole lot in the nose of this beer, some piney citrus and a touch of tropical fruit.

You get the hops right away but not as much as you would think. It's balanced by a decent amount of malt and has a lingering dry and bitter taste.

It's a decent enough IPA, and a convenient purchase for me since the brewpub is within walking distance. I would drink this again but I wouldn't go out of my way to find this beer.
Appalachian has a few decent brews but I find most of them are lacking just a little bit in what I want from each style. And this is a good example.

Another IPA transported by a friend from Stateline Beverage on the MD/DE border.

12 ounce bottle, w/o freshness/bottling date info.

Pours clouded dull light apricot. The lite tan head is long lasting and fine. Very slowly goes to a high clinging collar, nice lite sheeting and an equally quality looking webs and spots of lace.

Faint nose of grapefruit.

Nicely hopped up IPA. Citrus level is way up, bitterness is way down. Fruity, crisp, fresh tasting, light and enjoyable.

Hoppy Trails indeed. Nicely done, sessionable and worth tracking down IPA.

Appalachian Brewing Company Hoppy Trails IPA is a weird beer. The beer is a slightly hazy, bright orange with just a flurry of white head that fades quickly. The aroma is very heavy in grainy malts with a distinct smell of DMS and only a hint of woodsy hops. The beer tastes very odd. It is at first very caramel sweet with an orange flavor that makes it taste almost soda-like. Then the bitter comes in, it's blunt, astringent and lingers for a second before disappearing. This beer is lacking the hop layering and complexity that one expects from American IPA's. The carbonation is fine, but the tannic hop flavor leaves a grainy feeliing in my mouth. I found this drinkable (not a drain pour) but would not get this again.

On-tap at the Harrisburg location.

Pours a clear, deep copper color with a one-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of a combination of sweet pale malts with a good deal of citrus and pine hop aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. A combination of pale and caramel malt flavors are joined quickly by citrus hop flavors. Midway through the sip hints of sticky and resinous pine enter into things before fading into a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this was a very aromatic IPA that delivered in the flavor department but not quite enough to make it anything more than very good. Worth a shot.

Bottled on date: 11/28/10

Pours a very clear, light amber color with a finger of frothy white head and sticky lacing. There's not a whole lot going on with the nose, some faint grassy / floral hops and sweet caramel malts is all im picking up. Malty sweetness upfront, along with some citrus notes, with a floral bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation and somewhat dry.

This is actually a re-review...my notes represented a much more malty IPA than I recall from multiple pours from the brewpub. So, I threw a bottle that was semi fresh in a mixed sixer to give it my best possible review. It didn't improve much, slightly more hops on the tongue and not nearly as sweet, but thats about it. Certainly a mess after a few months, but nothing all the special when really fresh either.

A clear, orangeish-copper body is capped by a creamy head of off-white foam that holds well and leaves craggy lace throughout the glass. Sweet caramelish malt combines with floal and citrusy hops in the nose. The body is medium-full and it's fine carbonation bristles the tongue before it warms to become quite creamy. A bold bitterness backs a rich, deeply caramelized malt that's laced with yeasty fruitiness and infused with floral, piney, and citrusy hops. It finishes with some lingering sweetish malt that quickly fades, leaving behind longer lingering hop flavors and bitterness.
