Had a nice pint of this on 28JAN12 at the Harrisburg location, while on break from Ft Indiantown Gap.

My shaker was filled with a deep, dark mahogany bier. Though hard to tell, it was without haze; quite the dark offering. The creamy head was tan and a bit rocky, too. Good stick was left down the sides of the glass. Aroma was a bit mild, with some roasty aspects and a touch of florality. Body was middle of the road medium, and it was prickle-free on the tongue.

It started sweet, with some caramel, then had a bit of roastiness and a hint of dark choco. I also picked up a suggestion of peatyness in there as well. At the finish it had some pithy hop characteristics, ending on a dry, rindy note. Solid all the way!

I also had their cask version, with the most noticeable difference being the mouthfeel. It was even smoother and a touch fuller in that regard, and still tasted topshelf. Prosit!!

Appalachian "Batch No. 666"

Without any style listed on the label, and no real suggestion as to what it was (666? It could have been a halloween / pumpkin ale) I didn't have much to go on except that it listed the alcohol as being 7.7% by volume. 'Ahh, what the hell?' I thought, 'I'll give it a shot'.

NOTES: Dark brown body with mahogany and ruby highlights. Frothy yellowed-tan head. Smells of cocoa with a background suggestion of roast or smoke. Coffee-like I guess. The head drops shortly, but thin curtains of grey lace are left behind on the glass - in time they break up into 'cobwebs'. Should have better head retention and lacing at just 7.7% abv. The flavor is fuller than the nose suggests. The cocoa and milk chocolate return along with some soft dark fruit. It's fairly bitter, and just a slight touch piney. Some very subtle roast does seem to lay there under the surface - (I get it more in the lingering finish than across the tongue). A thin edge of alcohol is noticeable - not necessarily bad... seems to help, gives an edge and some character. Bits of sugary caramel linger in an otherwise dry, bitter and piney finish. Nice. Expecting more? Perhaps. Disappointed? No. Pleasant and very drinkable... gladly NOT overdone, particularly the hops. Hints of coconut as well; but I wonder about the smoke/roast? What's really there? Something along those lines would be in keeping with the label. Buy again? YES - $5.52! Seasonal?: Fall, Thxgvng, Xmas, winter BBQ, summer BBQ? ...case

So, OK, from their website... it is an "October Specialty" at a solid 19.5˚OG, and 61 IBU's. It's also, supposedly, "a devilish Halloween Brew" that's "dark bronze in color" - but not the batch I sampled! State Line is out of stock, but they'll re-release it on 9/28/12. I teetered between a 4.0 and 4.5 for "overall" score, but decided to go with the 4.5 based on ... well, I'm just not sure but I liked it enough to look into buying more, so that should be enough. It's not brilliant, but it's solid; and it's very reasonably priced.

This poured out as a reddish brown color with a thin fizzy white head on top. The smell of the beer was malty but didn't have too much else really going on. The taste of the beer was average at best, I feel like this one falls a little short in the Winter Warmer style. There is no spice notes that I could tell and it mainly tasted fairly generic to me. The mouthfeel had a good carbonation to it but was a little on the light side again for a winter brew. Overall I had much higher hopes for this brew and I was let down. With a name using the number of the beast this beer should have been much more aggressive in all aspects. I feel that Appalachian kind of dropped the ball on this one.

From 22oz bomber to Bruge hybrid glass on 11/26/11

*From what I've been told, this is a blend of a Brown Ale and a Porter.

A: Hazlenut toffee brown in hue. A standard pour yields a lush two finger head that sticks around for a while. Above average lacing follows.

S: Milk chocolate, vanilla extract, spice and tinderbox. As it opens, a bit of tanned leather and mild cigar tobacco shine through.

T: Quite impressive. A bit of sweet, dried vine fruit up front. as it moves to the mid, it begins mutating into a rich, brownie batter like brew. The transformation is unexpected and wholly enjoyed. As it warms, there's a pronounced spice note on the fore-palate.

M: Nice weight. The depth and complexity of this is on point. The layered feel of the beer really adds to it's likability.

O: Easily the best beer in Appalachian's line up. Batch 666 is complex yet easily approachable. It feels well thought out, and something I'd return to. Recommended.

*And no, from what I can tell, this is most certainly not a Winter Warmer.

On tap at Collegeville...
Appears a dense chestnut brown(crimson edges) with a small beige head that quickly fades into a gentle cap and collar.
Smell is of roasted chestnuts, a touch of figs, cocoa, raisins, espresso bitters, vanilla, molasses, and yeasty chocolate cake.
Taste mimics the aromas with bitter blasts of grain and grassy hop notes.
Mouthfeel is coating, with sweet and bitter notes challenging the palate. Amazingly, little beads of citrusy hops wash away the sticky malt flavors that are sticking to the tongue. Pretty nice stuff.

Batch 666

My buddy got this growler from the brew pub at Gettysburg. I was lucky enough for him to share it with me. I usually review on the spot but I had go by memory.

Nice ruby body color. The head was brown and very creamy. It reminded me of a stout but not as dark . The head left nice lacing on the glass.

The aroma had a brown sugar, toffee with a woody smell.

The taste had a slight coffee, some toffee, caramel, a hint of chocolate, brown sugar and a woody taste that takes center stage. Also, a alcohol taste was noticeable but not overbearing.

The mouth feel was nice and silky. Creamy head. The body is about medium with just the right amount of carbonation. Some alcohol heat was evident.

This is a tasty brew for sure. As it warmed, the alcohol and wood taste came more noticeable. The best part about this beer is the taste and mouth feel.

A - Pours a very dark brown, may as well be black, color with just a smidge of light creeping through. It produces an inch of tan head and leaves some lacing behind.

S - The aroma is lacking a bit, I get some roasted and crystal malts. There also traces of spices, but too faint to make out.

M - Medium in body with moderate carbonation and a creamy feel.

T - Dark roasted malts come first and quickly interweave with sweet caramel. A very nice milk-chocolate flavor follows and it concludes with a roasty bitterness.

By far the best offering I've seen come out of Appalachian that wasn't from a homebrewer(the single hop IPA series was great).

Just in time for this review, number 666!!! m/

This gives all appearances of being black. Backlighting exposes a small edge of dark brown around the edge. An easy pour produces a very creamy looking, light capuccino brown colored, head of foam, about 1/8" thick. It doesn't seem like much at first, until you see that it never leaves(!). The lacing is almost curtain-like with it's thickness.
The look of this one is almost perfect. (A half point deduction for the lack of true black in it's color.)

Roasted malts, all full of sweet hints, are dominant here. A good amount of holiday spices are a little bit more subdued, but still nice. Hints of cocoa powder and milk chocolate. A hint of caramel and some light traces of brown sugar, along with mild dark fruit notes.
This nose is mild, overall, but there is a lot going on here, if you look around a little bit.

The spices hit first and are immediately followed by big notes of very roasted malts. Milk chocolate gives way to dark and bittersweet chocolates. Dark fruit sweetness, along with light traces of caramel provide a slight bit of balance.
The roasted malts are definitely the shining focus here.

This has a medium, almost full, body to it. It has an almost high level of carbonation to it, but it feels like it's natural. It's full of millions of little tiny bubbles which give it a great touch of creaminess. Very smooth.

This is quite delicious and very easy-to-drink. Too bad it was done as a one-off. I'd love to get more of this one!

Poured from a bottle into a HUGE mug.

A- pours jet black with a 2 finger tan head. Very puffy head, with minimal lacing

S- roasted malts, sweet chocolate, hints of bitter coffee and dark fruits...very nice, albeit a little mild

T- I'm not getting a TON of flavor...slightly bitter chocolate and coffee with hints of dark fruits in there, but everything is really muted and blah.

M- its got a nice, thick body to it...but with the weak flavors, it seems like overkill

D- eh. At least they tried something a little different...but its still a typical Appalachian beer, lacking much flavor or character

Bomber via trade. HARRISBURG TICK HELL YES!

Pours darkest brown with a small tan head that leaves a film.

The aroma has loads of cocoa, sweet caramel, and roast. Slightly smoky, and pretty nice.

Sweet on the flavor. Chocolatey, but a little fake tasting. Burnt caramel, toffee, smoke, and roasted malts. Pretty good, but too sweet.

Medium-bodied and smooth with long finish. On the creamy side.

Overall, well, I'd like to homer this up, but honestly it's only decent.

Thank you to FishGetter for grabbing this brew while on his trip to Harrisburg. Thanks buddy! Served this chilled, in a snifter, from a twenty two ounce bottle. This is my first beer from Appalachian Brewing.

Appearance: Batch No. 666 pours out what appears to be a deep brown color that instantly looks black in the glass. A somewhat hard pour brings on a head that is a light tan color, soapy, and about a finger high. Head settles quickly into a thin ring of foam around the glass. Some light wisps of webby lace were left behind.

Smell: Roasted malt seems to rule the nose. Slightly spicy ,and a bit of dark fruit lingers. Maybe some bits of chocolate and toffee. Very roasty.

Taste: Big roasty character to it. Roasted malt with some charred wood. Bitter chocolate is also noted. Has a bit of a medicinal flavor in the background. Finishes dry and a bit bitter. Alcohol is all but hidden.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied mouthfeel. Not quite chewey, but thicker. Carbonation is medium, yet tingly.

Drinkability: A pretty drinkable brew. I'd like to try some of their other offerings. Thanks again Shawn.

On tap at the Harrisburg location. Curiosity got the best of me since it has been a few months since I had this from a bottle. They had it on tap so why not give it a go.

Pours a dark brown color with lighter brown that is clear around the edges. More than a finger of tan head appears and retains fairly decent. As it slowly receeds it forms an uneven cratored surface and a bit of patchy lace clings to the glassware. (Note: more than 2 minutes into the experience there is still some head showing, this is not a normal occurance for a beer on tap at ABC!)

The aroma of this brew is sweet with the scent of cocoa and a light grainy character shines through as well. As it warms, there is some coffee character that comes out.

The taste includes a bit of fusel alcohol upfront with a mixture of flavors including coffee, chocolate, roasty grains and some malty sweetness. A bit of residual sugar lingers in the mouth coupled with the bitterness of the roasted grain.

Medium feel with a low level of carbonation. This brew reminds me of a type of hybrid stout meets brown ale or scottish ale but with more forward alcohol character that is somewhat sweet and fusel in character that somehow pulls some strange sweetness towards it like molassess or dark skinned fruit. Worth a try but nothing amazing.

Had this at the ABC location in Harrisburg. Looking at the taps & after seeing the name, I just had to try this one. Ended up having 2 or 3 (it was one of those nights). Bartender said it was an imperial red. Looked pitch black. Tasted very chocolately, roasty, borderline coffee-like with decent hop aroma. Didn't think it was an imperial red. Seemed more like a black IPA. I digged it, but after at least a couple of these the ABV really kicked in. Nice offering and a step above of most other ABC brews.

Thanks to Tanger for this extra. Served in a FoBAB pint-shaped taster glass.

A - Pours with a finger-plus of tan foam that settles to a thin cap and ring. The body is a dark brown color that displays some transparency and reddish highlights.

S - Fruity yeast, treacle, candy apple, cola, and molasses. Maybe a bit of Scotch Ale smoked malt too.

T - Surprisingly alcohol-forward, but apparently this is par for Winter Warmers. Scotch Ale malt character with tobacco, cotton candy, and burnt sugars. Peculiar and unexpected hop bitterness.

M - This was medium across the board - carbonation, body, stickiness, etc. Alcohol was not particularly well hidden.

D - While Nate was grimacing and forcing this down, I found it strangely compelling and refilled my glass a few times. We probably shouldn't have cracked this out of season, as it's pretty "to style".

Poured into a tasting pint style glass. Color is an opaque black with ruby hues and a minimal mocha head. Smell is of malt extract powder, honey, and some darker roasted malts. Tastes like burnt sugar, booze, dark roasted malts and more alcohol. Apparently having an alcohol forward taste is normal for the "winter warmer". Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly sticky with a moderate carbonation. Considering booziness and so-so smell and taste, drinkability was actually not bad. That being said, I am glad we split this one.

P- ABC

A- light dark chocolate color if that makes any sense. a decent finger and half head hovers around that is slightly fluffy. it is a tan color.

S- coffee and dark fruits ( apple maybe cherry) and some sweet caramel malts.

T- dark fruit and dark coffee flavor. The malts really dominate this brew. They are sweet like molasses but mixed with a dark coffee.

M- creamy and almost thick bodied. Burnt char and coffee feel coats the mouth.

D- not a sipper but not easily downed. A nice beer to chill and relax with. Would defintely like this beer to return from retirement.

Pours a dark amber color with 1 finger of frothy beige head, decent lacing.

The scent was of roasted malts and fruit.

The taste was roasty chocolate malts at first, then molasses, and fruit. There was also a good hop presence, notable spiciness, and warming alcohol.

Full-bodied, smooth and a little chewy, good carbonation.

This was a really flavorful beer, there was a great balance of the many flavors.

Growler from the Harrisburg location. Pours a dark brown. Sweet malt, burnt sugar, some bitterness, a touch of coffee. Our waiter told us that this was supposed to be around 7% but the brewer made a mistake, so he added more "stuff" to compensate, so now it was really around 9%. After drinking a few glasses of this all I can say is I hope he makes more "mistakes" like this! I look forward to getting another growler ASAP!

A - The beer was served with a pitch black body...there wasn't any ruby highlighting...this beer was black...a creamy, one finger, light brown head that showed decent retention...it settled into a film...started off with decent lacing

S - The aroma opened up with some dark fruits...a sweet caramel and other roasted malts made an appearance...a touch of smoke as well

T - A big part of this beer focused on the malts...I did not pick up on the metioned citrus hops as other reviews...I was stuck on the burnt malts that were present...dark fruits were present but over shadowed by the malts...there was that caramel sweetness that saved the beer...and again a touch of smoke

M - Full bodied...could have been creamier...coats the palate

D - I don't know what to classify this as...I don't think it was a winter warmer...but it's not meant to be drank on 85* days either...a nice fall beer...I wish I could have picked up on the hops that others have mentioned
