The what-turned-out-to-be-7th and final stop of the super awesome magical mega central PA 2 day brewery tour was Appalachian! For those keeping score at home, the 5th was an unplanned stop at a winery between Selinsgrove and Harrisburg (don't bother, bad bad wine) and the 6th was Tröegs for the tour and a snappy Tröegenator work shirt (I can now pretend to be a supervisor of a hardwood flooring company named Mark).

An almost-literal stone's throw from the aforementioned production brewery on the wrong side of the tracks in H'burg. Stuck between a mass of tracks and a cliff on Cameron St. in the Commonwealth capital, it looks like any other gloomy warehouse in the row. Inside it has that spacious warehouse-turned-brewpub look that's so...warehouse-turned-brwepubby. It's a good thing, and it's done right here. Lots of tables and in the back is a long L-shaped bar. We plop down right in the right angle. The surprisingly large brewing system is visible through glass behind the bar. We get a sampler of 8 beers, all solid examples of their styles, and some fries. Fries weren't bad, though the oil wasn't hot enough when they were fried...sort of soggy and one was undercooked. But I ain't gonna rate a place's food just on some fries. We got a couple of small glasses after that of their cask stout and their oak (not bourbon) barrel aged barleywine, both were fantastic. Service was very nice to boot.

We definitely plan on coming here again when in the area, Appalachian gets slagged too much and the brewpub is a great establishment with a wide selection of quality beer.

Highly recommend touring this brewery because you get a one on one with the master brewer. It's a more friendly and intimate experience than some of the larger breweries.

Had dinner here after a visit to Hersheypark. It's a really neat space. Great old building, really high ceilings, huge windows overlooking brewing equipment.

Beer was good. I tried two seasonal/special brews. The saison was tasty. Nice floral (lavender?) character. Could use more funk. Good beer selection overall, with the standards plus the seasonals (there were about 5 of these). They also have their own sodas.

Food was better than expected. It's simple pub food done well. My turkey burger was tasty.
Service was very good. Our waiter didn't write down anything, and got the order 100% correct even though two of us made changes/substitutions.

Also, if you're in Harrisburg, make sure to check out the inside of the state capitol. The supreme court room is astounding. You have to be on a tour (free) to see it.

It's just okay. The beer selections are fairly standard and not very exciting. I'm an IPA guy and their Hoppy Trails is very disappointing, just not much to it. Service seems to run hot and cold from visit to visit. This is a good idea that seems to be more interested in expanding the franchise than concentrating on the product.

Appalachian does just about everything right. The friendly bartenders are great about giving samples, and the beer selection is outstanding. We always receive excellent service when we eat there and the food had always been great. I love the Abbey Bar and the fact that they hold concerts there makes this place stand out. There are plenty of beer choices and nice souvenir offerings for those interested in taking home glasses, tap handles or stickers. Over all, Appalachian seems to really have all of their duck in a row.
