If you happen to be in Brighton and feel interested in Gale's beers (before the Fullers kills all of them), there're three pubs, all very good, which you've got to visit: Basketmaker's Arms, Prestonville Arms, and this pub. It is located at the top end of the hill up the Southover street, and is constantly "the" hit in the local CAMRA branch's Hanover crawl.
"Very" modest exterior. However, when one gets inside the pub, he/she wouldn't fail to appreciate why this pub is so widely loved. Down-to-earth atmosphere, modest wood-themed interior, low ceiling, plenty of paintings, photos and maps of the past on the walls (most are related to the maritime history)... while the locals and friendly landlady would make sure one feels he/she is not alone, as random conversation is picked up ever so easily.
Being a Gale's pub, it has the full range of their beers on draught: HSB, Festival Mild/GB(in the past), Butser and a seasonal, on four handpumps. The condition is not always at its best, I must say, but should do no harm to one's expectation of Gale's beers if having never tried them before. BTW, the pub has a very nice beer garden at an upper level at the rear, providing great atmosphere especially on a sunny summer afternoon if one likes to sun-bath and drink. I have sipped many a pints of GB in perfect condition in this lovely beer garden when studying in Brighton, and that experience makes me still deeply in love with this place and the now discontinued draught GB. Alas, the Gale is now owned by the Fuller and I only wish the great atmosphere and at least some of the regular brews will be there to stay.
