American Double / Imperial IPA |  8.60% ABV

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes/Commercial Description:
An intensely hoppy, very strong pale ale without the big maltiness and/or deeper malt flavors of an American barleywine. Strongly hopped, but clean, lacking harshness, and a tribute to historical IPAs. Drinkability is an important characteristic; not a heavy, sipping beer.

Draft at Toronado San Diego. March, 2013.

Pours a hazy, bright golden orange color with tangerine edges and a two finger frothy white head.  Excellent retention, only slowly settling into a thick, lasting ring.  Streaks of lace left behind.

Earthy resinous hop aroma with lots of grass and pine along with a subtle tropical/citrus fruit presence and a decent malt backbone.  Grass, pine needle and spruce tip along with grapefruit and orange peel.  Biscuit malts with some graham cracker and slight caramel sweetness.

Full bodied with a blast of dry, sticky hop bitterness that lingers over the subtle tropical/citrus fruit notes and malt backbone into a bone dry finish.  Grassy, dry, bitter and earthy with dank buds, pine needle and spruce followed by grapefruit sweetness and zesty orange peel.  Caramel  malt backbone with hints of toffee, biscuit and bread.   Not enough tropical presence for the style in my opinion but it has nice bitterness and is easy to drink.  The malt presence is a bit stronger than I prefer but this is still a solid beer.
