excellent for what it is - a session IPA. a ton of mosaic hops. you wouldnt know the difference between this and a 'regular' ipa! really, really good...just wish it was available in houston. (190 characters)

A: Very light yellow, clean and clear. good white head 2 fingers.
S:Very floral. citrus forward. grassy finish. More aroma than expected
T:Light. Crisp. Grassy bitterness with come lemon peel. Definite grapefruit.
F: Tons of carbonation. Very crisp bite, clean. leaves a bitterness on the whole tounge.
O: I make sure to rate each beer for what it is. For a session it is pretty tasty. Very easy to drink. It could be balanced better though. Would recommend for summertime or out on the golf course. (502 characters)

Canned: 02/03/15

Appearance: pale, golden, yellow in color. Just a little bit of foam skimming the surface of the beer.

Smell: very fragrant and floral, not in your face. Smell mostly of pine with some citrus rind.

Taste: starts out bready, then it becomes hoppy and bitter. Dry throughout, with minimal malt backbone. What I love about this beer is the aggressive hop profile. For a 4.5% ABV session IPA, its outstanding! It doesn't compare to the standard IPA, but its beyond my expectations of session beers.

Mouthfeel: light-bodied and smooth. Perfect for a warm sunny day (or any other day)!

Overall: this heightened my camping experience out in California. It was only ten dollars for 16-oz. six pack and very tasty. I'm just hoping more and more breweries will start canning in 16 oz. rather than 12 oz. I hope to pick this up again when I'm visit the state. (874 characters)

Ratings are correct below, but I changed some marks above to make the final rating as correct as possible with Beer Advocate's "revamped" system. The 3.65 overall rating is correct.

Type: 16-oz. can
Glass: Lagunitas mason jar
From: Trader Joe’s in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $1.50
Purchased: March 1, 2015
Consumed: March 1, 2015
Misc.: Canned on Jan. 9, 2015 at 11:25 a.m.

Poured a golden, pale, clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of frothy, white head. Lots of slow-moving bubble streams coming up from the bottom. Above average, uneven, foamy lacing. Average retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Pleasant odors of sharp grapefruit, Citra, floral, Mosaic, Amarillo, tropical, tangerine and light pineapple. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted a lot less flavorful than the nose. Definitely could tell it was a SIPA right away. Got Citra, Mosaic, tropical, vegetables, onion, light mango, faint grapefruit pulp and some watery pineapple. (Taste - 3.50)

Light body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, watery, slightly bitter finish. (Feel - 3.38)

Not a fan of this one. This ranks at the bottom of the all the session IPA’s I’ve had (off the top of my head Day Time, Easy Jack, Go-To, All-Day, etc.). (Overall - 3.50)

Pretty light golden brew, slightly hazy, topped by a nice snow white head. Good retention, and very nice lacing.

Great, eclectic hop aroma: citrus and tropical fruit; rind and pith; slight herbal and floral undertones. Slight pale malt biscuit.

Flavor follows: light overall, hop-forward and juicy, with a slightly dank finish. Can still taste a nice presence of pale malt and grain, despite the low ABV and hop prevalence.

Very light and drinkable; lively; minimal sting; medium length wet finish.

This is a really good session IPA. It carries more heft and body than most, while still showcasing plenty of hops. (617 characters)

Older can I got as an extra. Started off tasting great, but fell off quickly. Smell went downhill after a few minutes as well. I'm guessing this had to do with the age of the beer. Think I'd really enjoy a fresh one as it showed some amazing promise upon first pouring. (269 characters)

a: extremely pale yellow color, almost a grainy color with a 1 finger frothy soapy white head. looks similar to a pilsner

s: pineapple, garlicy simcoe, fresh dough, lemongrass, and some light caramel

t: very light flavor. garlic/onion hops, grapefruit, a hint of pineapple. these are followed up by a nice biscuty/flatbread flavor, and a nice caramel strawberry sweetness. very light tasting

m: light mouthfeel, but a large amount of carbonation that really fills out on the tongue

o: for a lower ABV it delivers a taste you would expect from a quality brewer. slightly hoppy, light sweetness, and a nice bready malt presence. its a tad too carbonated to be the extremely sessionable for me, but definitely a good beer to drink a few of if your looking to refresh (773 characters)

Can from Whole Foods.

A crystal clear light yellow with a dense, white head with nice retention and lacing, this looks solid. The nose is great. Bright citrus with some pine, this is what you'd expect for the style. The citrus is a clean, mildly lemony and moderately orange peel like blend of hop aromas, and the pine is, well, pine-like. Crisp and cracker-like, malt character is minimal here. The palate opens with a blend of hop flavors, delicate but forward with the aforementioned blend, the mildly lemony like hop bitterness edging out the more orange-like flavors. Crisp and clean on the palate, this beer is light in body, crisply carbonated, and drying and mildly bitter with a wonderful, long-lasting fruitiness on the finish. Excellent stuff. (756 characters)

Sampled on tap at PP Carsbad. Very clear light straw in color with minimal head. Subtle grass and floral nose. Bitter hop flavor through out with pine and a bit of sweet citrus backing. Clean but uneventful finish. Solid for a session able IPA but struggling to make my top 5 sessionable IPAs. (298 characters)

Poured light straw color with a highly effervescent head that retreats extremely fast. Very translucent. The smell is mostly hops, in the form of citrus, and a little cat piss. The taste is a mix of resin and citrus hops. No malts or yeast. The feel is the best aspect: crisp, clean, ans duper light body.

This is an excellent session IPA. Very similar taste to Alpha King but much different in other areas. (409 characters)

Having had quite a few session ipas, this is by far the best.

A) its in 16 oz Tallboys.IMO every session beer should be in cans.
B) its just simply delicious, blowing away easy jack, all day, go to, etc. This is sincerely a solid beer (235 characters)

This one showed up in a sort of FFT CANTrade ™ from a trader in Virginia who had received this and a couple of other Pizza Port CANs in a trade of his own and knew that I would up my ante in return for receiving them. Indeed.

From the CAN: “This Session IPA is named after a favorite beach and surf spot at the southern most [sic] part of Carlsbad. The jetties offer amazing lefts during a clean south swell and is a great place for a family or day at the beach with friends, We are really excited to share this hoppy beer in a CAN that you may enjoy a little longer than some of our bigger beers. Cheers!”

Yee hah! The Crack! showed that the surf and the level were both up in the CAN and in Carlsbad. I CANducted a goofy-footed inverted Glug until I was forced to back off because of the pint-sized CAN. A brief pseudo-cascade led to the formation of three dense, rocky fingers of bone-white head with good retention. Color was Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had notes of pine and grapefruit citrus, but I have been through this before with these “sessionable” AIPAs. The proof of the pudding will be in the taste. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was not as forward as a regular AIPA, but it was much hoppier than many of the session AIPA ilk. I still got the mintiness of the pine hops, but the citrus flavor was more orangish. Let’s face it, I am never going to be a fan of this dumbed-down style, but you could do worse than drinking this one, if such is your pleasure. (1,521 characters)

Surprised the ratings aren't higher. This tops Go-To and Daytime as the best example of a "session ipa" I've had. This beer is bursting with flavor from what I presume are citra hops. I could drink this alllll day. (215 characters)

Appearance: Pours a clear goldenstraw with a very impressive three-fingers of soap bubble foam with nice clingy lacing

Smell: Mango, passion fruit and ruby red grapefruit

Taste: It is pretty hard to find any malt flavor here as the mango, passion fruit and grapefruit flavors take over from the outset; subtle hints of strawberry and a smidge of onion on the finish

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: This is the session IPA I have been looking for - just wish it were available here in North Carolina

Thanks for the awesome extra LaChupacabra!

Pours light gold with white head. Smell is fruity, bright hops, clean and inviting. Jenna said it smells like raspberry sauce. go figure... Taste is crisp, hoppy, fruity and refreshing with a citrus and earthiness. Medium body and nice carbonation. Refreshing and flavorful without a heavy bitterness or overly syrupy mouthfeel to it. Very nice session IPA. (402 characters)

Hazy lemonade shade of yellow, bright white head forms with a thicket of nice bright head forming thick. Have no fear the nose is as dank as any really hoppy beer I've ever had, big citric notes, lush Mary Jane, cider like acidity note, herbal/vinous hops growing out of the glass. A bit of floral and garlic in the nose on the backend if you keep digging. Flavor has an absurd amount of herbaceous, garlic, and onion resinous hops, bitter bite of hops hits with each sip, it must pair well with Funions. Light resinous hop oils lay on the palate, bitterness dries out the finish of each sip lighter bodied session IPA in 16 ounce cans. Someone needs to share some Two Hearted Ale in this sized can with the folks on the West Coast. (732 characters)

This beer pours an extremely light blonde color, slight chill haze. The head is 4 fingers thick with decent lacing. The smell is of tropical fruit and hops, a very good nose. The taste is perfect for the style. It's a nice balance between resinous pineapple and mango hops and a very delicate and crisp malt back bone. the mouth feel is reminiscent of a typical light beer but the hop factor is of a West Coast IPA. I grew up surfing Ponto and bought this beer as a party favor for my groomsman's gift bags (I am getting married at Ponto beach next Year). Little did I know this beer would be amazing! For the style it's the best I've tried. Overall great hop profile, crisp clean malt and a low ABV. I highly recommend this brew. (730 characters)

A-Bright yellow almost glowing in color....frothy white head..

S-Aroma bursts from the can as you open it and pour it...a lot going on here...bright citrus (pink grapefruit), and pine are prevalent on the aroma....very aromatic

T-Loaded with hop flavor as well...bright citrus again with the pink grapefruit while also adding in some peach, as well as some tropical fruit sweetness...light grainy malt backing.

M-There's no way around it. The body seems too thin for this much flavor. I guess that is how it turns out with the lower ABV but in comparison to Founders All Day IPA this is much thinner feeling.

O-I'm very impressed with the aromatics and flavors this beer consists of. Really bursting with hop goodness and finishes with a clean, dry touch. An excellent session IPA. (786 characters)

A- Very pale and clean hay straw color. 2-3 Finger white head that has decent staying power.

S- Nice hoppy punch to if for the size. Grapefruit. Clean and enticing.

T- Big hop character again with a touch of spice undertones.

M- Light, dry, and extremely quaffable. Spot on for the style.

O- A good effort. Not my favorite style, but this one fits the bill well and has solid hop notes. (392 characters)

Poured into imperial pint glass. Pale straw color with a tinge of cloudiness. White head forms and leaves heavy lacing. The nose is similar to Swami... notes of bread, grass, fruity hops, and lemon rind. Taste is mild in terms of bitterness, plenty of pale malt character comes through, lemony fruit qualities coming through with a clean finish. Very refreshing. Mouthfeel is light and well carbonated. Overall, this certainly fits the bill for a "Session IPA". I still don't quite get the obsession with this style as it seems that every brewery has recently released one, but this is definitely tasty. (603 characters)

A beer I've hoped to try for a long time. Many thanks to iguenard for including it in my Canbif box!

Pours a very pale yellow colour that become hazy with sediment at the end of the can. Has an impressive large-bubbled white head with better retention than expected. Beautiful hop-forward aroma of juicy tropical fruits disappears quickly and I'm regretting not drinking this from the can, as it has totally disappeared from my glass?

Tons of flavour despite low ABV, a truly ideal Sunday afternoon beer. Although I can't distinguish the specific hop varietals I get mango, pink grapefruit & tangerine with a refreshing & lingering bitterness in the finish. Really nicely done.

Although I understand some of the controversy over the "session" style, this is certainly a beer I could enjoy over multiple pints. (814 characters)

Can from trade dated 2/18/14 poured 5/16/14. Thanks Stefan! Pours light yellow, totally clear with a big fluffy white head. Nice aroma of grass, citrus, vegetal hops, and light sweet malt backing. Surprised at the amount of hop aroma despite the 3 months in this one. Flavor is very floral, nice pine bitter bite, sweet citrus fruits, pineapple, and some malt sweetness in the backdrop. Really nice! Mouthfeel is surprisingly full with low to medium carbonation. Serious flavor for a session IPA. Recommended for sure. (518 characters)

Received as an extra, canned on 2/5/14

A- pours a bright golden-yellow with slight haze, small creamy and bubbly white head that retains nicely, leaving some good lace behind

S- citrusy hop aromas up front, also picking up some floral & pine, underlying bready malt rounds it out. Quite hoppy aroma for a session

T- blend of citrus, tropical fruity and floral hops mesh with a clean malt bill that adds just a touch of sweetness, more fruity notes on the finish with some grassy flavor

M- medium body and medium spritzy carbonation lead to a big creamy mouthfeel and a smooth and crisp dry finish

O- pretty impressive that they've fit this much hop flavor into an under 5% abv beer. If this were readily available to me, it would be a great pick for a summer go-to. Well done (780 characters)

cool can art....
huge foamy. billowy head. very aromatic, of pine at first. then I get more cat urine smell. then, lots of cat urine smell. must be simcoe? taste is light and easy, easy to drink.
a little hazy. super light yellow. great looking brew on top, but not sure what to think of the color of the liquid below. not quite corona, but not enticing either. I give it an overall 3.75 because it's definitely not bud, miller or coors...
add: can date is 2/18/14 so maybe the age of the can and the fact it was purchased warm has something to do with the cat urine aroma developing??
add #2: sticker on can date is 1/20/14 ? ? ? ? how can that be? I think the sticker on the can is done by Total Wine.... how can it be BEFORE the can date??? either way, it may explain the less than expected rating.... (804 characters)

16oz can dated 03/12/14 – FW Imperial Nonic Glass
Notes taken on 03/29/14

I guess I assumed this was the same Ponto Pale as in the pub???

A: Pale yellow-gold body with some really well conditioned clarity. Streaming bubbles are evident and rising up to a frothy paper white foam cap. Decent hang time too with some nice broken rings of lace running down the glass.

S: Fresh hop aromas abound from the can. Apricot with a lemony citrus kick trailed by some tropical fruit, herbals, grass, and pines. There are some distinct pale malts underneath there but it’s not coming through as sweetness necessarily. More doughy bread if you will. Regardless this one is more about the freshy fresh hops. Really nice nose to Ponto.

T: Vivid hops up front much like the nose with a mixture of citrus peel, mango, pine, lemon grass and other herbs. Mostly fruity with no spice or earth components and a very nominal malt character as to be expected. Just some dry crackery substance there and a minimal sweetness coming through. Packs quite bitter hop punch for such a small table brew. Still very nicely balanced in that nothing is done over the top. Falls off a bit early for me however most session brews tend to do so. In the end some very refreshing hoppy swill.

M: Super light and crisp from the carb action. Thin of course with a nice peppery bitterness across the palate and a dry resinous finish. Very clean all around.

D: Delivers as promised. This is one of the better session IPA’s available if you ask me. Just very clean and fresh with some bright hop flavors and a crisp snappy body.
I see many of these in my future endeavors…Crush on! (1,656 characters)
