Poured from a growler into a tall chalice.
A: Clear, brassy golden color with one finger of persistent white foam head. Heavy lacing remains on the glass.
S: Red grapefruit is dynamic in the smell; zest, pith, and juice are all detectable. Other hops-related qualities are not evident, although a fine thread of crackery malt is present. Exceedingly clean and focused overall.
T: Begins barely off-dry, with delicate floral hops aromatics that are naturally enhanced by grapefruit juice. Acidity is relatively low into the middle where nuanced pale malt yields just enough neutral bread to add depth without detracting from the citrus. The finish has continued aromatic flavors but relatively little bitterness for the style.
M: Medium viscosity, wet on the palate, with low carbonation.
D/O: This IPA/fruit beer hybrid pairs two ingredients that are obviously meant for each other in hops and grapefruit. It is easily approachable, effortlessly drinkable, and yet dangerously full-strength. It may seem like an obvious avenue for experimentation, but props to Pizza Port for executing the grapefruit IPA so nicely.

Grapefruit Puncher 7.3% ABV
A fresh hopped IPA with grapefruit added.
On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad – Standard shaker pint
A: Light burnished golden color with fantastic clarity. Paper white trim with moderate stay and some lazy rungs of lace that cling to the glass at each sip.
S: Grapefruit is evident in a very zesty way with an underlying earthy weed and herbal element. Fresh hops are fresh. There is some very mild bready malt there but this is mostly grapefruit rinds and dank weeds. Not the incredible grapefruit bomb I was hoping for but still nice none the less.
T: Taste follows the nose with a predominant grapefruit essence over a very dry malt cracker base. There is a relatively high level of scrubbing bitterness and a very resinous herbal dank weed note. Light honey sweetness in there but this is pretty dry which I like with no alcohol coming through for 7.3%. Pretty solid. Delivers on the namesake that is for sure.
M: Fairly light with a crisp carbonation and very dry finish. High level of puckering bitterness and some lingering hop presence.
D: Very drinkable with a minimal malt sweetness. Has a nice refreshing citrus character and a burst of hoppy bitterness. Dry and crisp. Again not the grapefruit bomb I was hoping for but still very crushable.
Worth checking out.
