Solana Beach. Pours a lighter clear amber with a decent white head. Fresh aroma of lemon and grapefruit hops with a bready malt. Bittersweet taste. Nice mix of grapefruit, strawberry, and lemon with the hops. Good caramel maltiness, with a bit of the biscuit taste. Great balance.

Lacey beer on-tap at Solena Beach. A bit of yeast and light grapefruit, very bitter pale yet still goes down well from offset malting. Middle plus mouthfeel. Fresh tasting, as they go through quite a lot of beer here. Aroma contains the yeast and the hops.

On tap at the Pizza Port located in Solana Beach.
Poured medium and hazy golden color with a smaller sized white head. This one had a stronger citric aromas (oranges and grapefruit). Tastes of the same citrus with light malts.
Notes from 11/30/04.

On-tap at Pizza Port Solana Beach
A: The beer pours amber in color with an off-white head. Sort of dark for a pale ale...
S: There is an incredibly mild nose to this beer. I get some bread and toffee, and maybe some floral hops. But those descriptors are really a pretty big reach.
T: The flavor is nice enough. It's bready with a nice toffee flavor and some toasted bread/malts. Floral hops along with some orange peel and a moderate pine flavor and bitterness.
M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation.
D: Easy to drink but it doesn't really do much for me, especially not the nearly non-existent nose.

On tap at PP Solana Beach 9/22/05.
Appearance: Poured from a pitcher to a pint glass. The head on this thing is wicked thick and solid. I haven't seen such a dense head on a pale ale before. But this thick off white head shows great retention and lacing on the glass. The beer is a copper to amber color with a slight cloudiness to it.
Smell: Rich maltiness covered over by an earthy hop nose and some light citrus.
Taste: Big malty opening with mild soft fruit flavors. But this maltiness is not around long until a burst of earthy hop flavor breaks in. The hop flavor carries a raw and oily taste with ample bitterness and a touch of citrus on top of the bark and mushroom flavors. The beer ends with lingering hop bitterness and a sweet maltiness.
Mouthfeel: Creamy and aggressive on the palate, particularly from the hop bitterness. Still it is smooth and comfortable after a few sips and once my palate adjusts. Light to medium bodied and it feels juicy.
Drinkability: I enjoyed this pale ale quite a lot with a Carlsbad Special pizza (chicken, artichoke, pesto, sundried tomato, and feta) at Solana Beach. The aggressive hoppiness paired well with the tart sundried tomatoes and bold feta and spicy pesto. I think this beer would pair well with many foods. It's a solid pale ale that I would gladly drink again.

Sampled on-tap at the Solana Beach location.
This pale ale poured a clear, golden amber color with off-white foam that settled and clung to and coated the glass. The smell was modest: malty with a touch of floral hops. The taste was malty with moderate bitter hops. The malt sweetness was nicely balanced with the sharp hoppiness. The mouthfeel was smooth with medium body and moderate carbonation. The finish left a nice malty flavor lingering. This was a nice, fairly highly hopped American pale ale. Very enjoyable.

Sample at the brewpub. This brew is a mostly clear amber color with a medium thin off-white head that diminishes steadily. Top ring of lacing with spots underneath. Hoppy aroma with notes of citrus and malt. Medium-bodied with a moderately bitter hops character. Malt and caramel are present as well, plus more citrus. The finish is citrusy hops with a lingering bitter aftertaste. Pretty good all around.
