Pours dark brown with a thick light tan head. Sweet roasty, chocolate milkshake aroma. It was just a tad thin for the style. Silky mouthfeel. Smooth taste of cocoa with a slight roastiness. Wanted a little more smoke/roast. It almost borders on a sweet stout. Tasty.

On-tap at Solena Beach. Dark brown with very creamy top, roasty aroma, creamy mouthfeel. A good substitute for Guiness, but still that sort of stout as opposed to a Bells level stout. Serviceable, more malty and roasty than any bitter flavor. Skippable, but was it the nitro?

On nitro-tap at the Pizza Port Solana Beach location. Served in a pint glass.

Pours black (ruby highlights dot the bottom) with a thin and creamy beige colored head. This stays rich from the nitro, just leaving massive drenching lace back. The aroma is quite pleasant. Roasted malts, some chocolate character, and a dash of zippy coffee thrown in as well. I'm digging it.

The taste is much the same. Dry roasted malts and light coffee bitterness up front, with some chocolate and caramel sweetness filling out the back portion of the profile. This wasn't overly assertive or anything but seemed spot on for the style to me. Very nice. The mouthfeel is lighter medium bodied with an exceptionally creamy and easy feel from the nitro. This literally slides down the throat with each sip.

Good stuff all around here. This really came off to me more like an Irish Stout at times and the nitro pour only helped. Pleasant and robust with a super easy drinkibility, I could have knocked a few more of these back.

On Nitro at Pizza Port Solana Beach

A: The beer pours a very dark brown color, almost black, with a creamy khaki colored head.

S: The nose is quite heavy on the roast with a bit of bitter cocoa and a general dark chocolate character to it. There's a slight butter note on the back end. A touch of coffee is there, too.

T: The flavor is quite a let down. Grassy and buttery is not a good combination at all. There are some pleasant earthy hop notes and a solid roast, along with some bitter cocoa and dark chocolate.

M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: This one had promise, but it failed to live up to it. Not really worth getting this beer.

Had on nitro tap at Solana Beach Pizza Port location.
Basically a very easy going stout, nothing outrageous in terms of bitterness from the roasted barley, but it is present. The nitro tap gave it a nice mouthfeel (very soft), and a creamy head. Nothing particularly outstanding in terms of flavor or aroma: it was dry and had a slight coffee/dark chocolate bitterness. It would be very easy to knock a few of these down. I'm not really a big fan of this type of stout because I've never found one in this style that was flavorful enough, but I'd definitely take this over a Guinness any day of the week.

Late May 2006- On tap at Pizza Port in Solana Beach, CA.

Presentation- Via the tap into two sets of samplers.

Appearance- Light brown in color. Not very dark at all. Small rim of a head and very thin lace.

Smell- This one smells of deep roasted malt and is a fair scent of bitterness involved as well. A tiny bit of chocolate and coffee ease their way in.

Taste- Mild blend of coffee and dark chocolate with a huge amount of roasted malt. No smoky flavors, just dark as hell, which is strange considering the weak look of the pour. Hops are pretty bitter as well.

Mouthfeel- A bit too much carbonation and a lingering bitterness.

Drinkability- A bit too bitter for me, but I do like the very roasted attitude it brings.

I had this beer on 10/2/04 at Pizza Port in Solana Beach. The beer is served with a tan, sandy head on top with great retention. It lasts almost the entire beer as you drink it. The color is a clear black. It looks a bit thin in the glass given how much light comes through it. But the flavor does not disappoint with a nice blend of toffee, roastiness, and coffee. It is unlike other stouts in that it is not overpowering with the roast flavors. It has other things to offer besides mind-blowing levels of roasty flavors, which is an interesting change of pace. The body of the beer is a bit too thin though. It loses points for that. Definately worth a try though.

Sampled on nitro-tap at the Solana Beach location April 21, 2005.

This dry stout poured a clear, black color with hints of red near the edges if held to the light. The light brown foam was very creamy (typical of nitrogen tap), and it persisted a very long time and coated the glass. The smell was modest, with some mild, roasted malt notes evident. The taste was mild, roasted malt up front with very low hop bitterness beneath the malt. It was malty overall with a touch of yeast. The mouthfeel was very, very smooth and creamy with medium body and low carbonation. The finish had a dry, very light bitterness. This was a smooth, easy-drinking stout.

first time having a craft brew on nitro.

Pours amazing. super dark brown/light black.

The super smooth creamy mocha head, of course.

Maybe it is the Dry Irish Stout style...but only get a mild aroma with little malt or alcohol smell to it.

The taste is the same. Some mild coffee notes, maybe a hint of chocolate not not much to speak of.

Wasn't as impressed as I thought I was going to be. If you blind handed it to me, i would probably have guessed it was a guinness... nothing wrong with that. but I expected more.

Sample at the brewpub. This beer is a dark brown/black color with a medium and foamy beige head that diminishes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, cocoa and malt. Medium and glassy smooth body with flavors of coffee, chocolate and hops with a solid roasted malt base. The finish is roasty and midly bitter with coffee and hops aftertaste. Above average all around.

on the nitro tap at the s.b. location,

A very easygoing, easy drinking stout, a little roast, a little amount of chocolate. This beer went damn well with my san fran style pizza. I thought the nitro would have added a little to the creaminess of the mouthfeel.

probably not a beer I would search out, but serviceable if I want an easy stout while in solana.

On tap at the Liar's club. Poured a deep rich almost opague black/brown. Smell is of roasted malts, a tad mild. The taste is more of the same a smooth roasted malt bitterness with a wonderful bitter caramel aftertaste. This is what Guiness should taste like. Absolutely perfect for the style. Mouthfeel is wonderful too, creamy and rich without being too thick or too thin. I could sit here all day drinking these.
