Off the cask @ Solana Beach. Unbelievable. Pours hazy brown with an undulating tan head. Aroma is heavy with caramel, nuts, and wood. The taste is massive. Chewy mouthfeel that is full of caramel malt and alcohol, and a resiny back. This one came in at 11%, but was still nicely balanced. Nice hop profile that is tempered by the cask and malt. Get there before it is all gone.

Solana Beach, CA
Dark amber and copper with a large light khaki colored head that leaves a lot of sticky residue down the glass.
The aroma is a sweet with lots of caramel and toffee notes, along with some bright citrus. Above average, but unexciting.
The flavor follows the aroma, though the bitterness is pretty extreme, even per the style. Along with the sweetness, there's some rich notes of dark fruits and mild chocolate as well.
Medium bodied with high carbonation.
A decent enough American barleywine, but unexciting, bitter, and somewhat simple.

Deep red and brown pour to it, slight tan ring of head around it. Aroma was pretty underwhelming, faint tones of alcohol, red ale malt type sweetness.
Not overly hoppy, not what I'd expect I guess for a Port BW, was smooth, and easy to drink for the abv. Kind of a cherry walnut wood feel to it. Wasn't sweet though. Kept getting better as we drank it, smooth, rich. Chewy, caramel, toffee in the mouthfeel. Taste more of the hops later on, its just balanced, a unique standing for this place. If you like nutty barleywines moreso than hoppy or sweet ones, this might be right up your alley.
On tap at Solana Beach.

Pizza Port night was like Pokeman, had to get them all. This was #14 on the night.
A - Brown beer with nice red highlights when held up to the light. Brownish head that had nice retention and left some pretty good lace on the sides.
S - Caramel, toffee, and some citrus. Some nuts and earth tones, crystalized malt, mild hops. I'll go with it.
T - Malty, little bit of fruit, mostly toffee with a bit of caramel. Just a hint of booze. I thought it smelled better, but it's not like it tasted bad.
M - Just a little bit gritty, medium bodied, sticky, medium carbonation.
O - This was good but not great, I enjoyed drinking it but it wasn't a particularly memorable barleywine for me outside of the look.

Old Boneyards on tap at Pizza Port Solana Beach in a tulip, this is a rare occasion!
A: Beautiful beer. It looks brown with a cursory glance, but when held to light it is a deep crimson with nice clarity for such a dark color. The dark brown sea foam head is monstrous and exhibits excellent retention. The wicked lacing clinging to the glass seems to cry, "Old Boneyards was here!"
A: Aromatic caramel and toffee with a nice grapefruit, orange, and pine hop profile. Lightly nutty, with no evident booze and a faint estery quality redolent of date. The nose is dry. Touch of brown sugar.
T: Powerful blend of toffee and caramel, with toffee being just a bit stronger. Despite such descriptors, the beer is not that sweet. It's well balanced by piney hops that have a restrained grapefruit quality. Bitterness is at an upper moderate level, but it's soft and not at all astringent. There's a tame nutty quality, and booze is very well hidden. There's a little dried date and a dash of prune.
M: Upper medium in body with upper medium carbonation. Mouthfeel is chewy, sticky, silky, and creamy.
Overall: A damn fine American Barleywine.

I had this beer at Pizza Port in Solana Beach on 10/2/04. It was served with very little head on it as expected of a barley wine. The color is a rich red much like many barely wines.
The aroma is full of sour fruits and the tangy sweetness that you would smell on sour cherries. The flavor is lacking a bit. It is a bit malty but with no distinct flavors to be found. The fruits in the nose are not in the taste. It is also thin in the mouth and lacks a quality texture.
