Draught @ Pizza Port in Carlsbad. Stunning. Dark tawny with a small head of light tan foam. Beautiful color. Aromatics of dark fruits (plums, raisins), caramel, chocolate and alcohol. Incredible flavor with hints of caramel-laden fruits, raisins, plums and leather. Hearty, herbal and very manly overall. This is one serious beer.

Sampled on tap at the Carlsbad brewpub.

This beer poured a deep, red, chestnut color with tan foam that settled. The smell was dark malt with mollasses, caramel, and some fruit. The taste was dark, slightly sweet malt with flavors of caramel, mollasses, raisins, figs, and perhaps a bit of fusel alcohols. The mouthfeel was smooth and warming. The body was full with low carbonation. The flavor lingered pleasantly in the mouth. This was a very nice sipping beer that packed a punch.

On Tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Dark brown color. Small head. Aroma is nutty malts, dark fruits and a touch of cinnamon. A full bodied Eisbock. Malts are slightly roasty, very sweet and full of dark fruit flavors. Hops are a touch spicy. Extremely smooth tasting beer. Bodied is so full its nearly chewable. There is an evident alcohol oiliness to it at 15%, but the alcohol flavor and bit is well hidden. Its very definitely there, but its masked very nicely but the malt sweetness. This would be a very nice beer to sip next to the fire on a cold winter night. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and very smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet

Presentation: A small tot of this quite remarkable beer was served in a straight sided small 4oz tumbler, though the serving size was actually 3oz. On sale during the 7th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival held at the Carlsbad Pizza Port. Myself and fellow BA Myk escaped the Festival and headed indoors to sample one of these 'legendary' Eisbocks which we had heard about all day. So after we had ordered one of the equally legendary PP Pizzas, we each waited for it to be prepared whilst sipping one of these outside in the Sunshine.

Appearance: It looks more like a vintage Sherry than beer. Dark brown with some orange and red flashes when held to the San Diego Sunshine. Absolutely no head whatsoever, a light swirl in the sampler reveals a clinging viscous layer of alcohol on the walls of the sampler that take time to slide back down into the Glass, maybe a Brandy Snifter would have been more appropriate for this.

Nose: Quite strange, nothing outstanding. A discernable vintage dark fruit feel with some sweet undertones.

Taste: Malts and not many hops. Warming dark fruits and some caramel toffee in the middle of the beer. Finishes with an Amontillado Sherry like ending. Warms only the throat and stomach, but not the mouth. Very accomplished and easy drinking.

Mouthfeel: Huge feel in the mouth but this really doesn’t come through until the warming throat signals the journey of the mighty Eisbock into the Stomach. Nice afterglow and warm tummy on this one.

Drinkability: Erm, just the one thanks, we still had half the day to see through and a plethora of 8%+ beers still to try. Yet somehow this beer was incredibly drinkable given its immense ABV. Bloody good.

Overall: An incredible beer that really belies its 15% ABV. Well worth a try. Great Value as well.

Sampled at the 2003 Pizza Port Strong Ale Festival. (Only on tap inside the restaurant)

You know a beer might be deadly if a brewpub is only selling it in 3oz and 6oz sizes. (Good price on those sizes too)

Beer comes in a small taster glass with no head and is deep milk chocolate brown with ruby highlights.

Aroma is of dark caramel coating raisins and plums. Surprisingly, there is no discernible alcohol sensation in the nose.

Flavor matches the nose with long luscious strands of caramel wending their way around your mouth. Before long the malt seems as narcotic as hops can be.

The finish strings into raisin and cherry fruits with a touch of roast, but finally as the beer passes to your throat that alcohol warming kicks in and traces a line all the way through.
