Tap @ O'Brien's. Pours clear darker gold with a frothy white head. Tangy aroma of pine, lemon peel, grapefruit, and grass. Sharp, biting taste. More grapefruit and fresh pine sap, with oranges, pepper, and apricot flavors. No real malt flavors to speak of, but as IIPA's go, was not out fo balance. Loved it.

Just tapped today, a fresh batch from Pizza Port San Clemente.
Pours a hazy orange color with a head that dissapated fast. But there is a nice film that lasted and is putting a nice sticky lace on the glass.
Smells great. Pineapple and peach hops with a sweeter maltiness in the background.
Taste is awesome. Very hoppy but is balanced very well with an awesome malty sweetness. Citrus, peach, pine hop flavor. Very tasty.
Mouthfeel is great. Nice malt backbone with a great carb and actually sort of thin mouthfeel for the malt taste. It's great.
Overall try this beer. It is awesome fresh and I'm glad I got to try it the day they tapped it. I love fresh IPA's

On tap @ Pizza Port San Clemente on 3/21/10. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a clear golden copper, topped with a thin covering of frothy off-white head. Fairly rich flare-up to this, which leaves spotty chunks of foamy lacing behind. The aroma is floral and resinous, with a touch of peppery spiciness to it. A tangy underpinning of fruit and caramel adds some sweetness to the nose but the standout feature here is a thick layer of grainy malt character that pulls up the back of the nose.
The taste is fairly assertive with fresh hoppy notes of piney resins and sweet tropical fruits. Grapefruits adds an extra splash of juicy bitterness to the proceedings, while grainy toasted bread and caramel gives the overall profile a sweet balancing nature. There's a very bitter finish on this, with resinous pine and spice lying hard on the palate. Good overall balance for the most part though, with this actually coming off as a touch oversweet if anything. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied but possesses a nice easy creaminess to the carbonation despite the heftier all around feel here. Alcohol is actually well hidden for the most part, with just some light warmth showing itself towards the back of the swallow.
Not a bad DIPA here at all. At first I thought that the heavy alcohol and graininess of this was going to get to be too much but the hops gained strength and this balanced out nicely as it warmed. I've missed this one during my last couple of visits here and I'm glad that I finally got to try it.

Thanks to blitheringidiot for sending this to SkinnyElvis who shared it with me. a terrific grapefruit flavored DIPA. It is sweet with lots of fresh pineapple flavors. Sweet fruits and bold grapefruit and citrus elements. WOW. This is the epitome of a double IPA. Double the hops, double the malts, double the goodness.

Had on tap at the Bistro DIPA fest. Pour a light copper. Smell was good blend of hops of fruity sweetness. Taste and mouthfeel didnt quite deliver based on the smell and was a little light for a DIPA. I would say this is more of a 1.5 IPA than a Double IPA. A tasty beer nonetheless. In defense of the beer, I may have had some taste fatigue, as I sampled a number of great DIPAs that day.

I had this one on tap.
Poured a medium and clear amber color with a very large sized off white head. Aromas of citrus (citrus peels), floral, a little earthy, and light caramel. Tastes of citrus -same peels-, caramel, and pine. Nice and hoppy and bitter.

A: Lightly burnished golden amber body with some well conditioned visibility. Served with about a half finger width of ivory cream settled over top. Modest hang time there with some nice sticky patch work left clinging to the glass.
S: The nose gives a caramelized malt sugar introduction with some complimentary breads. Not exactly the pungently hoppy fragrance you want in a DIPA but it is very clean. What is there is a nice floral medley of peach, apricot, and super fresh greens. Mellow really although nice and pleasant.
T: There is a good amount of caramel malt sweetness on this one with a touch of bread crust but it is very juicy with lots of apricot fruit notes, tangerine peels, and fresh greenie hops. A good step up from the nose here. Has some accompanying herbal and floral attributes to it as well. The beer maintains a nice dry and resinous effect however so it never becomes too sweet for the palate. Everything works well and comes together within good balance. It is more hoppy than bitter actually. Quite smooth in that manner and the alcohol is well masked for such a big brew.
M: Moderate filling and maybe a touch on the heavier side from the malt bill. Nice even carb smoothens the texture out nicely. Resinous hoppy oils but not terribly bitter on the palate. Has a nice crisp lift at the finish with good balance between wet and dry in the end.
D: Doheny comes across a little sweeter than I prefer so it doesn’t quite live up to others like Poorman’s. That being said this is really well balanced and was tasting very fresh with some real juicy hop flavors. Definitely a killer brew that hides the bigger ABV well.

On-tap at Pizza Port San Clemente
A: The beer pours amber in color with a fluffy white head and some sticky lacing.
S: A touch on the sweet side, but a lot of nice fruit notes. Big pineapple, grapefruit, and tangerine. Intense pine aromas on toward the back end. The rest of the scent is comprised of caramel malts.
T: More of the same on the palate. Big time fruitiness with lots of grapefruit and tangerine, though the pineapple presence is not quite as pronounced. Sweet caramel malt on the middle with plenty of pine.
M: Medium to full in body with a medium carbonation.
O: A very well done double IPA. I always enjoy this one.

After getting my car towed I was happy to find this on tap at Stone. I wasn't going to drink during the week last week, but then there was a power outage and I had a beer in my despair. I wasn't planning on drinking today, but my car died and Stone put on this 2010 GABF gold medal winner in the Imperial IPA category that I've long sought after. The gods are telling me to drink beer during the week, or they will continue to send disaster.
A: Dark orange with two fingers of beige sea foam. Retention is very good and there are sheets of lacing all over the glass.
S: Pronounced pine resin accompanies earth, tangerine, grapefruit, and orange. This is very hoppy, with a firm but even handed maltiness that reminds me of bread and caramel. Perfumy floral notes are present, and tangerine becomes stronger as the beer opens up.
T: Opens with a little bready malt and a burst of orange flesh. Bitterness is moderate and smooth. The malt provides an adequate foundation for the hops but does not attempt to take the reins. The beer is highly resinous, with dank pine and a little earth. Alcohol is well hidden. Grapefruit flesh blends with rind.
M: Medium in body with upper moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky and dry.
Overall: Damn good. It has a good amount of maltiness, but Doheny Double embraces it, making it a strength rather than a weakness.

I had this beer on 10/2/04 at Pizza Port in San Clemente. It presented itself very nicely in the glass with an orange to amber color and a thin head. The aroma was thick with piney hops and nothing else.
But this beer went haywire in the flavor department. It is piney and floral with some earthy leaf and almost a dirt or mulch taste. It also had some soapy character. Sadly this crazy flavor combination was pretty gross. It was too strong and unbalanced to be good. This is another Pizza Port recipe that with some work could be a good beer. But this one needs a lot of work...

I had this on-tap at PP San Clemente.
My pint showed a solid coppery-amber color with a blend of orange on the sides. There was a decent finger-width clean white head that left a light lace running down the inside.
The smell was a wall of pine and citrus hitting me smack on the nose. Damn, that was a good smack... it got me on deck for the taste.
Mmmm, a river of goodness gracing my taste buds. I could definitely tasted some grapefuit-citrus and possibly hints or orange on the finish... and very crisp. I really liked this brew. I would get a growler a week if i lived closer. (since they dont bottle this, i bought some bottles of Santa's Lil Helper, Mo Betta, and some Special Ale).

On tap at Pizza Port in San Clemente, CA.
Pours a clear honey orange with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a citrus zest flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that tastes slightly better than it smells in my opinion.

Fresh growler from Pizza Port San Clemente poured into Bruery tulip.
Pours auburn orange with excellent head retention and spotty lacing.
Fresh hops greet you with abundant grapefruit finished off with sweet malt. Fantastic smelling brew, I can't keep my nose out of the glass!
The malt overpowers the hops in the taste but still finishes smooth. Grapefruit not nearly as present as in the nose.
Fairly light bodied for a DIPA, well carbonated and drinkable. Will not be hard to put a dent in this growler.
Pizza Port knows their IPAs and again they do not disappoint. This variety may be sweeter than their typical offering but still well balanced and an outstanding brew.

On tap at PP San Clemente. Pours a cloudy red-orange with a thick white head. Head sticks around through the whole pint and leaves a ton of lace down the side of the glass. Aroma is overwhelming hops - lots of piney and citrus smells. Taste is the same, but with enough malt backbone to keep it from getting out of control. Definitely a nice double IPA

I was pleasantly surprised when my friend, who works as a bartender at pizza port brought a growler of this to share with me up in Tahoe. I knew nothing about pizza port, and wasn't expecting much and this blew me away. The nose was pungent and rich, it hit me all over my mouth with a good blend of bitter and fruity hop character and went down incredibly smooth. Two thumbs up for pizza port, I'm looking forward to visiting their pub soon.

A: Clear copper color. Poured a 1 finger foamy off-white head with fair retention. Laced in broken patches.
S: Nice blend of floral and spicy hops; tropical fruit, pine, white pepper. Wet grains and caramel malt in the background..
T: Big hops up front; pine and citrus mostly. Lightly toasted bread and caramel along with a resiny coating in the middle. Taste on unfermented sugar. Transitions to a sharp bitter finish. Overall, a nice balancing act.
M: Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Resiny and coating. Disguises ABV well.
D: Flavorful and balanced. Disguises ABV well. Easily drinkable (at least one or two).
