On-tap at Pizza Port in Solana Beach. Described on the list as a West Coast Pale Ale. I found it more akin to an English Dark Mild.

Pours a clear dark copper color with a one-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of grainy caramel malts with mild amounts of toastiness and even milder amounts of earthy hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Grainy and somewhat dry caramel malt flavors kick things off and are joined by a good amount of toasted malt flavors. Slight amounts of milk chocolate makes its way into things midway through the sip before fading into a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is OK. It's a bit on the thin side with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall I thought this was a solid beer and at 4.5% (at least I think that's what I remember it as) it's something you can sip on for a while. Worth a shot.

App: Pours a pale aleish golden yellow, but with more orange than expected. Somewhat hazy it provides momentary lacing and is pretty pleasing to the eye. (however I wasn't expecting this to be considered a german pilsner... i'm not quite sure it really is).

Smell: Fairly hoppy and somewhat citrusy, I pick up almost no malt underneath it all.

Taste: Citrusy grapefruit comes out as well as cantaloupe and honey dew melon. I again don't pick up much malt backbone, but it's there, just subtly.

Mouthfeel: Very low bitterness for the amount of hop taste and rather watery on the aftertaste. It does seem to have good body on the swallow.

Drinkability: It's a little interesting, easily quaffable, but not anything to get excited over.

On tap at PP Solana.

Poured a clear gold. Small white head. No lacing, good legs.

Scent was pretty mild. Bread dough and a bit of herbal hops.

Taste was more bitter than sweet, but very well balanced. Crackery middle. Grassy/herbal hops. Hopping pretty mild.

Light in body. Medium carbonation. Dry.

Overall, exactly as billed, a session ale. Nicely done and perfect for someone who still had some driving to do.

Late May 2006- On tap via samplers at Pizza Port in Solana Beach, CA.

Presentation- Via the tap into two sets of samplers.

Appearance- Dark golden in color. Light 1/4 inch head with decent lace.

Smell- Light grainy scent with some mildly pungent hops.

Taste- Grainy, malty, clean and crisp. Hop base is very drinkable.

Mouthfeel- Clean, nicely carbonated and little aftertaste.

Drinkability- Not sure what style this is, but it seemed closest to a pils. Sessionable for sure.

A great looking pint. The beer was a bright, clear amber and the beige foam left thick, sticky lace on the glass. Great head retention too. The aroma was a bit subdued, but pleasant, with a mild maltiness with more prominent citrus character. Bitterness was solid yet well balanced by the fruity and citrusy flavours. Hop character was soft and there was a hint of strawberry mid-palate. Bitterness lingered. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation. Quite refreshing and easy drinking, but not lacking in flavour. Good stuff.

On tap at Pizza Port, Solana Beach.

Pours a hazy bronze color with a film-like head. Very little aroma. Light- to medium-bodied with a decent tingle from the carbonation. Nice malt flavor with a bit of sweetness and the hops coming out towards the aftertaste. Not spectacular, but solid -- would work nice as a session beer (as the name would indicate!).
