On draft at PP Carlsbad

Appearance is a dense deep amber hue, light foam on the edges, moderate lacing

Smell is subdued for the style, some faint caramel malts, dark fruits, brown sugar, light grassy hops

Taste is a blast of rich caramel and toffee malts initially, some light hops, malt profile extends and dominates throughout, finishes thick and malty with slight alcohol burn

Mouthfeel is full-bodied, thick and chewy texture, bitingly strong carbonation

Drinkability is low, rather one-dimensional Scotch ale lacking any nuance or boldness, weak aromas and pedestrian flavor, I wouldn't get this again

Tap @ Toronado SD. Pours murky caramel brown with a short off-white head. Looked like there were floaties, but it was just the light playing off the haze. Low-lying caramel, peat, and wood aroma. Smoke and leather could be found once the nose fit in the glass. Full-bodied, loads of caramel and grain in the flavor. Less smoky than anticipated, but a strong peat quality emerged as the beer warmed. Sweet and earthy, a good beer.

Originally reviewed on February 18, 2005. Handbottle. Aroma is a smoky coconut and pears, light, pungent and a little unsettling. Pours is a dark brown, with a rim of off-white head and light carbonation. Smoky, chewy grain flavor with a hint of toothy piquant alcoholic butterscotch. Good hazlenut and buttery (but not diacetyl) with some sweetened pecans. Body of sweet dense sugars and light alcohol really holds nutty character over sweet cream. A well constructed Scotch, with my favorite nuances.

Consumed 08/08/09 at Blue Palms, Hollywood, CA.

Appearance: deep, dark brown with garnet highlights with a densely-packed light tan head of incredibly small and uniform bubbles.

The aroma is very subtle: fleeting hints of malt and smoke.

Flavor has some peat smoke and saltiness to go with the caramel malts, alcohol warmth and slightly bitter finish. Reminded me of a single-malt scotch.

Smooth on the way down, this is a very dangerous beer in its drinkability, especially considering the ABV.

A: Not necessarily the most pretty beer as it pours a murky dark brown with a creamy tan head.

S: Smells wonderful. Sweet caramel and vanilla with a touch of semi-sweet chocolate. Plenty of toffee going on as well. There's just a touch of peat aroma, which can often be overdone in Scotch Ales.

T: And it tastes even better. Sweet toffee and caramel with the same semisweet chocolate. Some toasted malt and vanilla which provides additional sweetness. Just a touch of dark fruit going on.

M: Medium in body with a smooth and creamy carbonation.

D: Usually not my favorite style, but this is just a solid beer. One of my favorites from Pizza Port.

On tap at Hamilton's the other day.

The beer pours a dark brown color with good head retention and excellent lacing. I must say this is very solid looking beer, based on color and head retention. I think the beer was a bit cold initially, so there's not a lot on the nose. I do get some butterscotch and brown sugar, but not a lot frankly. On the palate this beer is just delicious, especially as it warms up. The beer is moderately sweet, with just enough hops in the finish to balance that sweetness. Otherwise, I get some yummy flavors of milk chocolate, butterscotch and a touch of brown sugar. Drinkability is impressive, which given the abv., is perhaps not for the best. One is easily tempted to drink a lot of this, which would probably not be a good thing. This beer is not heavy or tiring to drink, and is just a delicious, easy drinking beer. Impressive.

Beautiful dark mahogany color in the pint shaker. Nice head with plenty of lacing. Nutty, sweet, and spritzy on the tongue. Even tastes like it has peanut butter in it. It's a totally mellow, goes down easy, strong brew.

There is a sweet smack of smoke but not anything overbearing. The peaty flavors are just the way to jack up this malty brew. Utterly drinkable and you'll be talking gibberish in no time, or your name isn't Jock. On tap at Pizza Port in San Clemente.

On tap at Sac Brewing Co

A - Poured a nice coppper color with a 2 fingered off-white head. Dissipated moderately slow and left little lacing.

S/T - Light smoke and vanilla and banana esters.

M - Malt dominated, slightly thin, with a dry aftertaste.

D - Overall good, but I think I expected much better from Pizza Port.

Dark, mahogany brown in color. Clear as far as I could tell. Very modest, light tan head.

Aroma was of strong, sweetened tea. Some caramel. Herbal notes.

Taste was of tea, smoke and herbal hopping. Something phenolic going on, which increased as it warmed and didn't do anything at all for the taste. Sweetish overall.

Medium to full body. Low to no carbonation. Not dry.

Too much of a malt bomb for me. Not particularly drinkable from either perspective (want another one right now or want another one period).

On tap at Pizza Port San Clemente.

A: Reddish brown with a frothy beige head.

S: Earthy and bready with accompanying toffee and candied notes. Lightly smoky. Restrained dried date and fig.

T: Rich toffee with bread and a little caramel. Earthy and sweet with a little brown sugar. Dried fig accompanies date and a little plum. Rich caramel finish.

M: Lower full body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: A nice Wee Heavy.

On tap for the first anniversary party at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a slightly murky orange-brown with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and slight smoke aromas. Taste is much the same with a slight grape jelly/jam flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of ashy bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but I am not sure sure about the grape jelly flavor that I am picking up here.

On tap at pp san clemente

Poured an dark amber brown with slight brown highlights that had a half finger of beige head and left frothy lacing sticking to the glass. The aroma was slightly toasty with toffee, caramel, brown sugar, and. Some smoke character in the baackgound. The flavor was also slightly smokey but I detected a little herbal hops alongside toffee, caramel, and brown sugar accents. The brew was medium to full in body with a fair amount of carbonation which had a sweet, herbaly, toasty, and light smokey finish . It drank pretty good but was content with a 4oz pour. Definitely was still a decent wee heavy interpretation.

Third brew tried this night and was probably the worst of the bunch

Poured a medium brown with a moderate head that went away quickly

Smell was filled with fruit and malt

Tasted a little sweet and sour, super malty with weird texture

Could drink much of this beer, not very smooth

A- deep mahogany, 1/2" off white head with decent retent, not much lace nor all that interesting to look at

S- malty, caramel, burnt sugars, dark and dried fruits

T- dried fruit, caramelized malts, residual sugars, toasted malts, raisin in after, hints of chocolate malt at finish

M- medium body, smooth, somewhat creamy, low carbonation

D- good scotch ale, recommended for style, not such a memorable brew

On-tap at Blue Palms,

A: Pours a red/brown with a soft white head, lighter than most wee heavies I've seen.

S: Brown malt, brown sugar.

T: Good notes of molasses, brown sugar and some piney hops. While the flavour is good, the intensity is low, no real complexity.

M: Quite light-bodied for a wee heavy, smooth, light carbonation.

D: Not a horrible beer, just average for the style, IMO Port's got a long way to go to catch Alesmith in this style.

Draught at PP San Clemente on July 2, 2009. Dark brown with a creamy light beige head. The aroma was lightly smokey, with minerals, toffee, herbs, and lightly burnt toast. The flavor was on the roasty side with sweeter caramel and toffee, though not too sweet. There was also a light mineral touch and bitterness in the finish. Medium full bodied with smooth, lower carbonation. Very well attenuated and drinkable for such a large beer.
