On tap at Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA.

Pours a hazy amber with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Thick foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and malt. Taste is much the same with medium citrus zest bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp but medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

enjoyed on tap at carlsblad location. An imperial red, malty and hoppy. Orange red coloured body. Above average mouthfeel. Good bitterness, resiny, piney, syrupy, caramel a bit of a palate erase (so a pint is a lot-TM). Good drinkabiiity. Decent balance for what it is.

Enjoyed on tap at Blind Lady Ale House, poured into a snifter.

The beer pours a nice rich red color with a half finger or so of tan/orange head.

Beer smelled a bit piney, but also very sweet like toffee.

Beer initially tasted very sweet of toffee and caramel. The sweetness followed by a bit of bitterness hid the booze taste very well.

Relatively on the light side, but a good bit of lacing. Overall, a very well balanced strong ale that was fairly easy drinking.

Pizza Port
Carlsbad, CA

A dark but clear auburn and ruby with a thick, pillowing pearl colored foam. Lots of sticky lacing running down the glass.

Pungent aroma and a nice combination of malt and hops: piney and citrus hops, toffee, bread, and caramel.

Balanced yet full flavor, without much to any alcohol presence, which is quite the accomplishment at this ABV. Piney and citrus hops with lots of caramel and toffee, without being too sweet. Very nice.

Medium mouthfeel and incredibly drinkable for a beer this big.

A delicious strong ale/imperial red.

On tap into a shaker pint glass at Toronado the day after their 24th anniversary. Dark brown with some reds and orange at the edge of the glass with barely any head off the pour. Can't see anything through the glass, but there was some nice lacing as I drank from the pint.

Nose was toffee, brown sugar, molasses, and a decent amount of hops, orange and grapefruit peel mainly.

Taste follows the nose pretty much exactly, a good amount of malt, toffee, toasted grains, brown sugar, with just a touch of citrus hops, orange mainly to give a little bittering. Pretty easy to drink, to be honest.

Medium bodied with a smooth soft carbonation. Drank much too easily for a 10% beer, finished my pint quickly, maybe because I was thirsty with this being my first beer. Pretty good beer, but nothing that distinguishes itself from other beers similar to it like fresh Double Bastard or Old Stock.

On tap at Toronado for their 24th. Has a dark red translucent body topped by a thin white head. Pretty big nose, an even mix of dark semi-sweet malt and resinous, piney hops; very Double Bastard-like. Palate isn't far from the nose, with a ton of dark slightly caramelized and roasted malt flavor, followed by herbal and resinous hops. Ends on a biting bitter note, quite dry for the high ABV.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a moderate amber color with a nice white head. A bit of lacing but not as much as I would expect from something this hoppy. Nose is overload of citrus and pine and is quite nice overall. The taste is a really dominated by the strong hops notes, although the flavor isn't as prevalent as the nose. The feel is quite bitter and nice. Drinks very well and was a nice selection. Glad to have visited.

A pint at Pizza Port, Carlsbad.

Very deep amber and clear. It was poured with a dense head that hasn't budged in 10 minutes. Citrusy hop aroma. Decently balanced, although more DIPA than strong ale. Could have used more caramel sweetness, but very drinkable, nonetheless. A bit of carbonation up front. Bitterness mellows a bit in the back end where the caramel tones begin to play, with the flavor becoming a bit smokey and bordering on heavily caramlelized sugar as it warms up. Alcohol is well incorporated into the drink but definitely there.

Re-reviewing this one. My last review (from the Toronado 22nd) was an A+. My latest experience (Toronado 23rd) was less impressive.

A: Dark brown / amber in color with a reddish tint to the body. Has a small head and leaves some trace lacing down the glass.

S: Caramel, toffee, butterscotch, toast, candy. The last time I had this, it was very hoppy; here there is only a mild citrus note to it.

T: Really sweet and bland. A solid blend of maltiness, only partially offset by citrus and earthy bitterness. I know how good this beer can be; is there a lot of batch variation, or is this an old keg? It's incredibly disappointing.

M: Smooth, creamy, full-bodied, medium carbonation. No alcohol detected. Very well done for a 10%er.

D: I've had this beer 3 times, and 2 times it has been a sweet, malty mess. Such a shame; when this beer is on its game, it's an A+ imperial red.

A: pellucid crimson with a frothy beige cap.

S: Pungent mixture of grapefruit and pine resin with a substantial caramel malt foundation. Hop aroma is great when the beer warms.

T: Pine resin, strong caramel malt presence, balanced with an upper moderate level of bitterness. Dash of sweetness. Almost balanced in the finish with caramel, pine, and grapefruit

M: Sticky and creamy. Upper medium bodied. Upper moderate carbonation.

Overall: A nice malty imperial red ale. Not as aggressive as something like Tongue Buckler, but is tasty and drinkable.

poured a dark amber brown with maroon highlights that had a half finger of head and left good lacing on the glass. The aroma was big on the caramel malts with a faint nuttiness and slight hops in the background. It seemed to have a bit of sweetness as well. Upfront the flavors w1ere also big on the caramel malts and came with a little hop bite and nutty sweet accents. The brew was medium body with a good amount of carbonation that had a slight sweet hoppy but malty sticky finish. Overall the beer was good on drinkablility and was actually more tasty than I thought it would be.

On-tap at Toronado for the 23rd Anniversary. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Poured with a finger of off-white foam that settles to a thin cap and leaves behind nice lacing. The body is a transparent dark amber - surprise!

S - Big amber nose filled with caramel malt, toffee, and burnt sugars, but accompanied with a hefty dose of tropical hop notes.

T - Taste is fairly similar, with lots of sugary malt, cotton candy, toffee, and caramel, but finishes bitter due to a big hop infusion. This is more on the barleywine side of things rather than a palate-shredding hop monster. The 10% is very well-hidden.

M - Light zesty carbonation, full-bodied, sticky, with an oily enamel-coating finish.

D - I thought this was more aromatic last year - perhaps this batch wasn't super-fresh? Still, as a true double amber it's quite solid. By the end of the pour it gets a tiny bit boozy and bitter - I probably wouldn't want to have a second glass.

On tap @ Pizza Port Carlsbad on 3/18/10. Served in a pint glass.

Pours deep hazy amber, with a thin covering of light mocha colored frothy head. This pretty much doesn't budge, especially staying rich around the edges and leaving thick and sticky swathes of lacing back. The aroma is rich with Amarillo hops, which give off plenty of dry spice and pine in the nostrils. Lots of sticky tropical fruit character is also present, as is a thick underpinning of caramel and toasted grains. This sits nice and heavy in the nose but still remains somewhat lively thanks to the sharpness of the hop profile.

The taste matches the aroma, with a blast of resins, bitter citrus rind, and spice up front, being balanced by a thick background of sweet fruits (mango, pineapple), rich & sticky toffee notes, and roasted malt character. Almost a dark molasses feel here to that big malty backbone. The spice and dryness of the hops really sticks around hard in the finish. The mouthfeel is full and thick, with a softer creaminess to the carbonation that keeps that big feel relatively smooth on the palate. As a matter of fact, you would be hard pressed to believe that this is 10% ABV. I mean, this has some beef and warmth to the overall feel but it never in any way gets out of hand.

Wow, just a big & burly West Coast flavored Double Red here, which seemed to pack the power and flavor of a couple of beers into itself. Well done and a fitting tribute beer for the SF Toronado. I'm glad that they are continuing to brew this one.

On-tap at Carlsbad

A: A solid looking pour to this one: a deep, dark amber color with plenty of red with a thin off-white head.

S: A solid hop aroma to the nose with plenty of citrus and pine. Even with the hops, the toffee, caramel, and toasted malt are pronounced, yet somehow remain at the back.

T: Like the nose, there are some nice sweet malty qualities to the flavor (as you would expect from a red). Also like the nose, the hops really are the star of the beer providing plenty of grapefruit and a bitter and piney finish.

M: A medium to full bodied ale with a light carbonation.

D: I didn't even realize this was 10% until I looked up the beer on here. Very well hidden ABV and a delicious beer all around.

On tap at the Toronado 22nd Anniversary Party. Poured into a pint glass. Comes in at 10%.

A-Pours a dark red and is very clear when held up to the light. Has a small off white head. Leaves some nice streaks of lace.

S-Lots of citrusy hops. This smells incredibly fresh. Considering it is an Imperial Red the malt is left mainly in the background. There is also a tad bit of earthy hop character in the nose.

T-It has a nice level of bitterness from the start. There is lots of citrus tang upfront and a tad bit of malt sweetness at the end. The hops definitely win the battle against the malt bill.

M-Medium bodied with nice carbonation. Not overly sticky like a lot of high abv Imperial Reds.

D-The abv would limit this one, but it is by far the best Imperial Red that I have consumed.

I was really impressed with this one. It is too bad it does not show up more often. Tons of hoppy goodness in this one.

On tap at Toronado's. Barleywine festival.

A - Light mahogany pour with a 1 finger head, which dissipated fast.

S/T - Caramel, anise, breadiness, toffee, and light alcohol. Possibly some dark fruits such as plums/raisins.

M - Full-bodied, rich, malt-dominated, which lent a creamy, yet viscous feel.

D - Would love to try again should they bottle this one.

64 ounce growler purchased for $19.75, board listed this imperial red at 9.4% ABV, split with my dad and a friend, poured into a pint glass

A-Deep brownish red color, thin 3/4 inch creamy beige head that lasts a long time, nice retention, great lacing at the top of the glass
S-Floral and pine hoppiness, toasted breads, caramel malt, toffee, sweetness, grassy accents, lemon juice, and mild booze
T-The sweet malts from the aroma start things off and stay pretty strong throughout, there is some soft but sweet syrup in the middle mixed with caramel and toffee, this finish is bitter and has a nice hop presence, there is also some mild booze in the finish that intensifies as time goes on, still fairly dry in the last few sips though, liked how the malt and hops worked together in this one, not overly sweet like many other beers of this style
M-Dry, bitter, creamy, and malty mouthfeel, medium to full bodied, moderate level of carbonation, taste lingers with dryness on the tongue
D-Alcohol is hidden well for a double red, the balance and strong hop presence helps well with that, not too heavy on the stomach, smooth and

Anything with Toronado's name or address on it is going to be good from my previous experiences, hopefully this one will be on for the Strong Ale Fest because it is quite tasty and I would not mind having some more, recommended

On cask at PP Carlsbad

Appearance is a clear amber hue, lively patch of bubbles on top, minimal lacing

Smell is big caramel and toffee malts, dark fruits, and piney hops

Taste mostly follows the aroma, the sweet malts dominate throughout, alcohol warming also hits the palate strongly and doesn't let go, pine hops, anise, molasses show up in the middle, finishes bitter and malty

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, thick and chewy texture, mild carbonation (cask!)

Drinkability is moderate, the alcohol is definitely stiff at 10% and the malt/hop profile is in your face, might be a little less edgy on draft

On-tap, Toronado 20th party. review from notes.

Dark, dark red with a small head of white that dies quickly. Aromas are very malty with a bread and fruit punch mix going on, this is one of the hawaiin punch beers I like so much. hop blend is ahrsh in the front but levels out with the malt in the middle and finishes smooth and sweet. Very punchy, more of a double IPA than an imperial/double red or strong ale. Reminds me of Dreadnaught. Super fresh tasting as well. Mouthfeel is lighter than expected but still medium>thick. Drinkability is very good for a brew of this size and stature. Nice one.

Poured on tap into a pint glass at Pizza Port Carlsbad 10-02-07.
Poured a reddish brown color with a small head that whil sticky almost vanished in a couple of minutes. Smell most of toffee and malt profiles. Taste Carmel, toffee, peacan bourbon reduction with a mild bitterness that was of set by the malty body. But the body still proved to be creamy and smooth for a 10% beer. That makes this beer a creeper beer that will catch up to you. I had a glass of pliny elder than this and about 15 min. later felt pretty nice.

What we have here is a damn fine beer. Listed as an Impy red ale at Carlsbad it drank nothing like one.

Dark copper colored semi transparent with an off white head. Sticky trickling lace clings for dear life.

Very un-red ale like. Thick sweet caramel and milk chocolate with date and fig paste. Berries and candied nuts with a hint of clove.

A great beer. Thick creamy and delectable. Good floral hopping that lends to a good bitter balanced finish. Very sweet but not cloying. Milk chocolate, fig jam, clove, dried berry, date, and candied nuts. Alcohol is noticeable but dosen't really interfere with drinkability.

Had this on tap at Toronado the week after their 20th anniversary celebration. Brewed special for that event. Poured a dark reddish brown, not quite black. Thin head, but great lacing. Smells sweet and floral, fruity with notes of peaches and cherries. The taste is profound. Very complex with lots of hoppiness throughout. Nice hop flavors of pine and orange followed by candi sugar, dark fruit, and apple. Bright and deep flavors with a very dry finish. Nice! Mouthfeel is creamy and substantial enough for the brew. Big beer, but smooth and drinkable. Really enjoyed this one.

Brewed, I am assuming, in honor of Toronado. This is an Imperial Red Ale - however, since that is not a style on BA, I have to classify it as an American Strong Ale.

Pours a beautiful dark amber/copper color with a 2 finger fluffy off-white head that never fully dies - nice!

Smells delicious - piny hops and lots of caramel malt.

Taste is excellent. Lots of delicious caramel malt backed up by a nice balance of piny hops. Strong in flavor, but very well balanced. This is a 10% that drinks like an 8% beer. Nicely done.

Mouthfeel is excellent. Nicely carbonated, with a medium mouthfeel and a perfect richness.

Drinkability is excellent. The growler went too fast.

Highly recommended. Go try it.
