At Port's Barrel Blast - 15th Taster

A - Murky Brown, mocha head that was there more than the other port offerings but not for long - don't know if this was about tapped out too

S - Sweet, Vanilla, Alcohol and oakiness

T - Sweet, Vanilla, sugary with a light alcohol note - mostly noticed the sweet - possibly a brandy note from the barrel

M - Heavier side of the tasters from the day, rich, light carbonation, heavier coating - much more of a sweet heavy finishing beer - glad to have had this near the end of the evening

D - Very nice, a little sweet and heavy, but more where you would assume some of these barrel aged beers to sit with the high alcohol contents and mix of flavors - but at 8.50% I was surprised it had such a richness.

On tap at Pizza Port Strong Ale 2010. 2008 vintage aged in a Brandy barrel.

A: Murky dark brown with a small beige head.

S: Big caramel and toffee notes with ample vanilla. Brandy is well integrated with light brown sugar notes. Really nice. Some strong wood notes. Barrel aromatics are prominent yet well integrated, allowing the base beer go shine through.

T: Moderate sweetness, notes of vanilla and strong toffee. A firm brown sugar presence melds nicely with the well integrated Brandy.

M: Nice creamy mouthfeel. Not at all thin. Some stickiness and alcohol warming. Moderate carbonation and lower full body.

Overall: An excellent Brandy Barrel Barleywine and my favorite beer at the fest, along with Farley.

On-tap at Strong Ale

This is Way Heavy aged in Brandy Barrels from 2008.

A: The pour is a sort of muddled dark brown color with some amber hints to it. Not really much in the way of head formation.

S: Good vanilla aroma starts this one off with lots of barrel influence. Caramel, mild roast, chocolate, and a decent peatiness are present as well. Not too much booze, but a bit of a brandy aroma.

T: Again, great vanilla flavor, moderate brandy and oak flavors, too. Sweet, creamy, milk chocolate, and caramel give this beer a nice sweetness. The peat character is not as pronounced as it was on the nose, however.

M: The body is medium with a somewhat low level of carbonation, but it's quite creamy and smooth.

D: A good balanced barrel aged beer. The barrel makes itself noticed, but the brandy and oak flavors are not over done or overwhelming.

Sampled at the 2008 Strong Ale Festival, consumed 12/5/08, reviewed from notes, one of the VIP beers, color was a darker brown with some very dark red showing through in the light, 1 1/4 inch fluffy light tan head that lasted five minutes or so, nice retention, some lacing, aroma was full of butter, cream, and vanilla, there was also a good amount of oak, brandy, and some sweeter fruity malt, flavor was nice and buttery too, I have been told this is not always a good sign in beer but I am an absolute sucker for it, liked the sweetness in this one and how it bounces off the brandy, finish is slightly warming and mixed with caramel, flavor was sweet but very enjoyable, medium bodied, felt overly carbonated at times, hot, sweet, and sugary mouthfeel, taste lingered a long time, could drink a few glasses of this, alcohol is not hidden very well but it still works on the drinkability side for some reason, maybe because it is not overwhelming or filling, I had heard about this one in the making months ago and was patiently waiting to see it released somewhere, look forward to drinking more of it in the future, recommended
