On tap at Pizza Port San Clemente
8oz pour – 08/05/2014
A: Blackish brown with a glossy sheen across the glass. Looks a few shades darker than black coffee with a light brown sugar rim. Decent retention efforts with very few dots and splotches of stick left behind.
S: Smells super fudgy with a generous mocha filled nose. Dark chocolate leads with lesser notes of dark roasted coffee, a little bit of brown sugar sweetness, and chocolate crème. Incredible amounts of chocolate and roast here. This is quite the decadent aroma. Like an espresso bean brownie.
T: Rich with dark chocolate and blackened malt sugars. Espresso coffee notes carried with a mild earthy bitterness cutting across the brown sugar sweetness. Never harsh or astringent. Alcohol asserts a bit towards the backside but never falls out of line in proportion to the other flavors. Very clean overall with some mild charred smokiness and a whisper of brewers licorice coming through in the finish. This is ridiculously good with intense chocolate flavor. Devilishly rich and decadent while maintaining a very approachable and balanced drink.
M: Moderately thick but with a smooth creamy lush feel on the tongue. Low moderate bitterness with some mild alcohol warmth. A bit of oily slickness left coating the palate.
D: This was a huge surprise. Delicious, chocolaty, smooth coffee, and well balanced. One of the best Chocolate stouts I have come across in sometime. Awesome brew! Everyone should try this.

Consumed July 31st, 2011 at Pizza Port San Clemente.
Beer is black, even when held to direct sunlight. Small tan head composed of fine, uniform bubbles.
Aromas: chocolate/cocoa, dark roasted malts, a hint of porter-like sourness, lactose, vanilla.
Flavor follows nose for the most part, though oatmeal does appear on the palate briefly. Milder than I would have expected for the style; when was the last time you had to WORK to taste the flavor components of an RIS?
Mouthfeel is slightly thin (more like a to-style porter) but smooth. I'm guessing that's due to the oatmeal.
I was jazzed to try this on the hand pump, but with armed with this experience, I will get it on standard CO2 or nitro when next we meet...

On tap at Blue Palms for Flip Flop Fest
A - essentially black, with a short-lived and small mocha brown head.
S - big malt, considerable coffee and chocolate with some other sweetness
T - ridiculously sweet, like holy shit. lots of chocolate, though there is also a bit of coffee. a bit.
M - between the sweetness of the taste and the shockingly thick, rich, and creamy mouthfeel it basically feels like drinking a milkshake.
O - The first half of this beer shake was delicious, the third quarter was tasty, and the last quarter was cloying, overwhelming, and a slog. I'm definitely glad i got to try it, but i'm not sure i'll order it again. if you're ready for a milkshake, though, this is definitely a well made enjoyable alcoholic one...

Had at Pizza Port San Clemente on a recent trip to Cali. Served from tap into a shaker. Poured pitch black with a half finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. There was no lacing evident throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark chocolate, and slight alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark chocolate, caramel, and alcohol. It had a heavy feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Ovearll this was a pretty nice brew. It had a great flavor and aroma going on here. The flavor was better than the aroma, but not by much at all. This one is an absolute MUST try. Even though I haven't had it, I could imagine the -bal version of this being QUITE tasty.
