Pours a crystal clear golden color with white head continuously being fed by the carbonation bubbles migrating from the bottom. Mild grapefruit bouquet. Very soft, cottony mouthfeel. Competing pine and grapefruit flavors. Finishes with a lingering grapefruit citric bitterness. But the finish is clean. Solid IPA.

This beer is horrid. Served on draft at Churchkey. Beer is yellow and clear with a white head of small bubbles, some lacing, moderate retnetion.

Aroma is hoppy, citrus and pine with malt.

Beer is buttery, creamy and gross. Not a good beer, not at all. Truly horrid. Gross, not a repeat. I sent back 2 ounces of my 4 ounce pour. Never again.

Poured on tap at Churckey DC into a snifter glass.

A very clear yellow eighteen carat gold body of lemon, with good rising carbonation, and real nice lacing as well. Head is an off white and settles nicely to a solid collar.

Nose brings a lot of mushy fruit hop angle. Grapefruit rich, nearly rotten and decaying, and a good interesting blast of salt and brine to this also. Pickled. Very interesting.

Mushy fruit hits the palate hinted on the nose of grapefruit. Finish is very resiny and coating, with a large pine and saltiness character mixing with a nice sweetness almost charring and dry.

Overall this is quite a fascinating IPA and taste profile have never had one like this. It's probably not what I gravitate too, but I would like to have this once in awhile it feels very special.

On tap for the first anniversary party at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a clear honey color with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Small carbonation bubbles rise from the bottom of the glass on the entire drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, honey, and malt. Taste is much the same with a nice honey aftertaste. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a great aroma and solid taste that makes for an easy drinking beer.

On-tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach. Poured into a pint glass.

A- Pours a clear golden color topped with a finger of white head, leaves some good lacing.

S- Very dank, citrusy hops. Lots of tropical citrus, pine and weed smell.

T- Big wall of hops again, picking up notes of grapefruit and pine resin, also a dank weed flavor. A bit of caramelly sweetness.

M- Medium-bodied, smooth feel with a slightly dry finish.

O- A damn good IPA, very drinkable, hop flavor is very nice.

Draft at Pizza Port Ocean Beach.

Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden yellow color with a one finger white foam head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.

Dank, floral hop aroma with lots of oily resins and bus blast of citrus and tropical fruit. Tons of lemon peel, pineapple and grapefruit.  Pale biscuity malt.

Chewy full body with a blast of dry, bitter hops that linger over the sweeter notes and pale malt into a dry finish.  Bitter throughout but countered by sweet citrus and tropical fruit notes.  Hints of pineapple, grapefruit and orange peel.  Nice pale malt backbone with hints of biscuit and graham cracker that doesn't interfere with the hops.  Well balanced and very easy to drink.

Part of a flight drank at the Ocean Beach PP on 12/31/11. Review from notes.

Appearance: Brown/orange in color.

Aroma: Smells very floral with notes of pine too.

Taste: Almost perfumey up front: lots of floral bitterness. Malt brightens and balances the flavors a bit before a bitter and piney linger sets in.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: The body on this isn't too heavy, but the flavors are very strong. Sharp beer that is a palette attacker.

Overall: Not my favorite flavors from the hops in an IPA. There was a little too much floral bite up front and not enough malt balance in this beer. It has potential, but seems a little heavy handed right now.

Review #1000.

On tap at Pizza Port, Ocean Beach, 11/6/11.

A-Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow, with a nice foamy head and good lacing.

S-Nicely balanced between sweet malt and big citrus fruit, mainly orange and grapefruit.

T-Classic West Coast style IPA. Good malt backbone and plenty of citrus hops throughout, with a very nice bite in the finish. Delicious.

M-Medium bodied with good lingering bitterness.

O-A classic version of one of my favorite styles.

On tap - Pizza Port Carlsbad

Notes from 08/26/11

A: My pint of Jetty arrived a superclear goldenrod color with some amber hints to it. Nice 2 finger white cap with relatively low retention and some sticky lace that dots the glass.

S: Aromas are honey sweet breads and fruity citrus. Hints of mango. Not super pungent with hops like one may expect from a Port IPA.

T: A definite caramel toffee sweetness overall. Good bitterness across the palate. Citrus and some danky grass. Sweet biscuity malt backbone.

M: Lighter to med. body. Nice creamy texture. Moderate carb. Slight sticky mouthcoat. Dry finish.

D: An all around solid IPA. More distinct with malty sweetness than some other Port IPA's. Good hopping but not in your face.

The only real knock is that PizzaPort makes some far superior IPA's these days.

Taken from notes July 23rd, 2011.

Had on draft at Pizza Port Ocean Beach location.

Pours a clear yellow-gold with a one finger head. Pine, grapefruit and pineapple juice on the nose. Medium bodied on the palate with a creamy carbonation. A nice lasting bitterness gives this beer real length on the palate. To me this is a great example of what West Coast IPA's are all about. Delicious!

On tap at PP OB.

Jetty IPA arrives with a finger of white head. The beer is a pale golden color. Nice lacing. The nose is citrus fruit and pale malt. Taste is orange and tangerine backed up by a nice sugar cookie malt backbone. Mild bitterness enters mid-palate and intensifies through the finish. A nice bitter aftertaste lingers. Feel is medium to light with a medium level of carbonation lending a creamy quality to the beer. Overall a nice IPA from Pizza Port. Refreshingly bitter and fruity, this is an excellent summer brew. Enjoyed it!

On Tap

Pizza Port
Ocean Beach, CA

Clear orange and amber with a thin nearly white head. Sticky globs of lacing dot the glass.

Citrus and pine aromas combine, but this doesn't have quite the aromatic punch that some other Port IPAs have.

Relatively bitter for a single IPA awash with citrus flavors, particularly grapefruit and some orange. Simple, classic, very tasty.

Medium mouthfeel. Incredibly drinkable.

A classic, signature Pizza Port IPA...certainly goes great with anchovy pizza (but what doesn't?).

Pizza Port seems to be kind of the west coast IPA, so a single seemed fun to try.

A - Orange-yellow beer with a foamy, white head that left some decent spots behind.

S - Pine, citrus, grapefruit, bitter. Not as complex or inviting as some of their other IPAs, and lacks the complex hop profile, but still good.

T - Mostly pine, with some citrus and grapefruit coming up front as well. Solid, although unremarkable. It's a good standard IPA.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O - Not bad, although somewhat non-descript considering how many amazing hoppy beers Pizza Port kicks out.

On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach on 6/28/11.

A - Clear amber/orange liquid with patchy white foam on top that deposited a thick coat of lace around the glass.

S - Spicy and citrusy hop character with a hint of catbox and sweet malt to balance. Smells like fresh Amarillo hops in there!

T - Assertive spicy hop character with juicy citrus notes and a hint of alcohol. Malt character is bready and grainy with a dose of sweet caramel. Finish is moderately bitter overall with a spicy kick.

M - Medium bodied with an oily texture and light carbonation. Finishes spicy with moderate lingering hop bitterness on the palate.

D - Port makes some great IPAs and this one is no exception. Enjoyable through and through.

Poured into a snifter. My tap review was from one of the pilot batches brewed at Carlsbad. I figured I should review it again now that it's the house IPA at Ocean Beach.

A: Beautiful beer. Burnished bright gold with great clarity. Big foamy white head with excellent retention and wicked lacing.

S: Orange and grapefruit flesh with light pith and rind notes. Touch of melon. A shadow of crackery malt. Some resin. Highly aromatic. This is all hops.

T: Really hoppy with an upper moderate level of bitterness. No malt at all. Dry and bitter orange flesh with an even amount of pith character. Lighter notes of pine and grapefruit. Pretty bitter but the hop flavor is there to back it up.

M: Upper light in body with upper moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is dry, crisp, and sticky, really nice.

Overall: A highly drinkable San Diego style IPA. Very enjoyable and definitely recommended. We made quick work of the growler and I wish we had another.

Pours a hazy straw/yellow with a thick white head, nice lasting lace. The smell starts with sweet malts followed by floral and citrus hops. Tiny bit of pine noticed.
The taste is very pine resin forward. Other than that it follows the nose well. It's a little sticky going down.
Not a bad beer from Port. I still enjoy Wipeout and Hop 15 a bit more.

Appearance: Arrives with a clear light amber color; the modest head crowns the liquid and leaves a trickling of lace behind

Smell: Grapefruit and pine; quite citrusy

Taste: Like the aroma, the beer has lots of grapefruit bitterness with a very pithy character; the bitterness has a bit of an aspririn character; the finish was clean and dry, with very little malt to speak about

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: While not a mind bending beer, this was an excellent example of the West Coast IPA style

On tap at Fat Heads IPA festival!

This was, unfortunately, my least favorite Port beer at this great tasting. But that's not to say it was bad. It just wasn't anything to write home about. But you, dear reader, are not my home. So I write this synopsis for your perusal and enjoyment!

The beer is average looking with a gold body and a white head. There is some lace, but it lacks the coating of some of the other Port offerings. Clear as can be, I could bring this to the eye doctor as my goggle of choice and still come away with 10/15 vision.

The smells are primarily straight-ahead hoppiness, nothing that you haven't encountered a few times when you're a raging hop head like me. Some pine and grapefruit, probably due to the incorporation of some C-hops in the recipe. No real malt except for a sweet kiss of caramel.

The taste fairs slightly better than all the other elements that make up Jetty. Some juicy oranges and grapefruit are served over a bed of pine needles with an abrupt, bitter and dry finish that barely showcases any malt at all. Just a crisp drop-off into the flavor abyss.

The mouthfeel is on the lighter-side of medium bodied, with ample carbonation providing a bit of punch. Some medium to high lingering bitterness and a bone-dry, West Coast finish. Drinkability suffered not only from the lack of any clear personality, but also from the much more attractive offerings from Port that flanked this at the tasting. While a jetty is typically used to mitigate unexpected shifts in tide or sand build-up, this beer stayed too long in the safe harbor for me.

I was very disappointed to see that this replaced duet and poor man's ipa on the port menu. Not nearly as good.

Pours a orange-ish gold. White, sudsy foam head.

Smells like pine, faintly of citrus, and a random sort of bitterness. Where are the explosive grapefruit/tropical flavors? None here.

Taste is okay. Kind of a standard, mishmash of bitter flavors IPA. Pine seems to be the most predominante note.

Meh.

Draught at PP Carlsbad on July 2, 2009. Clear gold with a lacy white head. Pine, grapefruit, and lightly floral aroma with a touch of toasty malt. On the dry side with resiny, piney bitterness and some grapefruit peel. medium bodied with medium carbonation. Pretty good balance with a firmly hoppy finish.

On-tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad.

A: A hazy orange-yellow color with a nice fluffy white head that sits on top.

S: Pleasant but not "wowing" aromas of pine and citrus--particularly grapefruit.

T: Like the nose, the flavors are good, but not amazing. A nice bitter bite of grapefruit and resinous pine, with a touch of malt sweetness.

M: A medium bodied IPA with moderate carbonation.

D: A nice, fairly sessionable IPA. It was a good beer to get a pitcher of and split with friends, but not necessarily an amazing beer.

Toronado SD, noted as OB, Ocean Beach Pizza Port. Yet to open so assuming brewed at another Port location. If this is their first brew it's a great one. Nice unique but delicious hoppy flavor. Very dry west coast style. Medium bodied and pretty complex. Nice nose with a solid finish. Very enjoyable. Great hop presents and stands out, tough to do around these parts. Would gladly order or buy bombers of this anytime. Usually you can just move on but I'd want to try this again and again. Great job!
