On Tap - Pizza Port San Clemente & later from growler
Notes taken on 05/17/14
A: Straw yellow body with some goldenrod hues and a slight hop haze look to it. Bubbly with a half inch of paper white foam head. Modest retention efforts and some light swaths of stick end up lacing the glass.
S: Smells very clean and fresh but not particularly strong. There are some vibrant florals and peachy stone fruit aromatics there with a few pine and citrus zest undercurrents. The nose finishes off with a soft sugary malt cracker note tucked underneath. Really nice and fresh overall.
T: Floral hops with peach and apricot remain firm in the flavors. It has a bit of citrusy tangerine and pine mixed in with a dank weedy herb component to it as well. The malt brings only a light suggestion of cracker to the brew with some soft caramels. Has a nice light peppery bitterness on the palate. Oily hop residues and some sweet alcohol gives presence towards the finish however it is well incorporated with the rest of the beer. Overall just very clean and fresh tasting.
M: Moderate body and even falls more on the lighter side with a nice even frothy carbonation. Upper moderate amount of perceived bitterness and alcohol is lightly warming. Slightly resinous with a touch of drying crisp in the finish.
D: Claudie’s doesn’t offer up much of a deviation from all of the other hoppy goods at Pizza Port but I do love me a good IPL. The Lager yeast provides such clean profile for the hops to do their thing. This one may not be the best I have had but it is made well with some really nice fresh hop flavors. Another growler dusted.

Growler from San Clemente. Thanks for this one, too, James.
A: The pour is a hazy golden color with a tint of orange to it and a smallish white head.
S: A really nice and fresh hop nose to this beer. Lots of citrus like grapefruit and tangerine with a bit of pineapple providing sweetness. There are some pine notes, but not much in contrast to the fruit.
T: Things are just as solid on the palate. The pine notes and bitterness are more pronounced here, but there's still plenty of tangerine and grapefruit peel. Just a touch of pineapple comes through and no malt whatsoever.
M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation. Nice and crisp on the finish with a little bitterness lasting on the tongue.
D: Maybe not quite as good as Humulus Lager, but still pretty nice. I like how these types of beers really provide a clean slate for the hops to shine.

On tap at Pizza Port San Clemente. If an accident had to happen on the drive home from The Bruery, thank the gods it happened next to Pizza Port and not the 15 mile stretch of desolation between Oceanside and San Clemente.
A: Straw gold with a big white head. Nice color, good retention, good lacing. Nice looking beer.
S: Nice hop aroma, notes of apricot, orange, grapefruit, peach, and some pine. Some floral as well. Malt is restrained and crackery.
T: Malt is crackery, providing just a little support to the hops. Hops give the beer an upper moderate bitterness. Notes of pine and grapefruit are evident and there's a touch of solvent character. There's a note of ephemeral sweetness midpalate that accompanies peach. Finish is crisp, clean, very dry and bitter. Alcohol is noticeable, a touch hot for the ABV.
M: Upper light body with upper moderate carbonation. Dry and crisp, very dry.
Overall: A nice IPL. Flavor not quite as good as the aroma, but still enjoyable.

Poured a translucent golden yellow with pale yellow highlights that had a thin bubbly head and left a little lacing sticking to the glass. Piney grassy hops pop out on the aroma first with earthy citrusy notes and a decent sweet malt presence. The taste was also piney grassy and hoppy upfront with earthy citrusy accents and good sweetness from the malts to help balance the beer. The brew was medium in body with a fair amount of carbonation with a sweet, piney, hoppy, citrusy, and slight oily finish. Really enjoyed the hop profile all around and was very drinkable. Good pizza port tick faux show.

Sampled at 5th St from growler provided by James 1/2/2011.
Pours bright yellow, kind of hazy, effervescent, fluffy white head, decent retention, some lacing.
Aroma is big on the pine and weed with some lemon peel mixed in.
Flavor is moderately dank with orange and lemon present. There is underlying earthy quality to it. Basically this has all the common descriptors of an IPA minus "grapefruit". There is no real base beer flavor, just a clean lager just dialed up to 7% abv.
Body is light, drinkability is present in high quantities, and Pizza Port made another good hoppy beer (as usual).
