Pizza Port
Ocean Beach, CA

Nearly black yet dark brown. Mocha head. Consistent lacing down the glass.

Lots of coffee and some chocolate in the nose along with some sea salt.

Lots of coffee, chocolate, earthy elements, and hops in the flavor, though still remarkably balanced and incredibly drinkable. The coffee is definitely the star of the show, but it's not at all overpowering.

Medium bodied. Incredibly drinkable.

A wonderful imperial coffee porter. It's balanced, yet highlights both coffee and chocolate along with enough hop bitterness to balance things out. This is a great imperial porter.

Thanks!

Appearance: Pours a ruby-tinted dark brown with good clarity. Two fingers of head rises, but doesn't last long.

Smell: A ton of earthy coffee up front, with notes of toasted almond and cocoa powder beneath the onslaught of coffee. The coffee lends a touch of spiciness, dark berries and carob. This is reminiscent of Founders Breakfast Stout, but with a coffee character that feels more complex and robust, and malt dialed down a bit.

Palate: Coffee first and foremost, which has an earthy, fruity and faintly spicy quality to it. A full, roasty, slightly acidic malt foundation supports the coffee nicely. There's a touch of semi-sweet dark chocolate, almond and carob in the mid-palate. Sweetness is reigned-in for the supposed 8.5ish % ABV. The body is a sturdy medium, leaning more toward full than thin.

Overall: What a great beer. Easily in the upper echelon of coffee beers. I suppose that should come as no surprise coming from this brewery.

A: Served in a 12oz tulip. Pours jet black with a fine tan head which fades to the rim. No lace.

N: Coffee with a capital "C". Fresh roast, some dark chocolate.

T: Follows the nose with a char and faint vanilla note.

M: Medium to full bodied. Creamy and dreamy.

O: Goodness gracious, this is delicious.

Big thanks to yourefragile for bringing this growler over. Served in a Mikasa tulip.

Pours a dark brown color that borders on black with a small off-white head that diminishes fairly quickly, leaving some sparse lacing as it falls.

The nose brings a good amount of chocolate and roast plus a good dose of coffee. Really, really nice coffee in the nose; it smells light fresh coffee beans. Very smooth and creamy. The flavor has more chocolate and coffee, but isn't quite as well matched. Light sweetness and bitterness.

Body is full and nice creamy. Carbonation is light, leading to a smooth finish without any noticeable alcohol.

Overall this was a big winner. A nice surprise growler that I was more than happy to partake in.

I tasted this at Monkey Paw, Downtown SD a few days ago. I love Porters, they're my favorite. And I love the taste of bacon and eggs together. I thought they nailed this flavor -almost- to a tee! However, with that being said, this is still one of the best Porters I've ever tasted. I will definitely be having me another one of these at some point.

On-tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach

A: The pour on this one is almost black with a creamy off-white head.

S: The nose offers up huge coffee and roasted malt aromas with a nice dark chocolate note in there as well. A very mild licorice scent and a decent amount of molasses. Maybe a hint of smoke and brown sugar.

T: As expecting, nice coffee flavor that lasts almost all the way through. There is a mild caramel sweetness to go with the molasses and dark brown sugar notes. Heavy on the roasted malts and dark chocolate.

M: The body is edium to full with a medium carbonation.

O: This was a really good beer. Bold coffee and roast flavors, but not overwhelming.

Black with a thin, beige head that falls off leaving little lacing. Nose is big coffee and chocolate, wonderfully full and hearty, mildly smoky, and an eggy, bready note, not unlike challah.
The palate opens full bodied with chocolate, coffee, and dark caramel, mildly burnt, lending a balancing bitterness. A touch smoky as well. Bittersweet on the finish with lingering coffee and chocolate, this beer feels great - creamy and full - on the palate. Light in carbonation, this is nice stuff. Highly recommended.

Love Porters.I'm not big on coffee beers but this one has the most righteous balance of coffee notes and chocolate. Very smooth!

"Breakfast Coffee Imperial Porter." Rich and malty but sharp in the mouth. More than a hint of sour, burnt malt. And more than plenty of the advertised coffee. Some caramel with a touch of vanilla ice cream. Some harsh raw grain flavors. Nice black color but head dissipates. No sign of lacing in the tulip glass. Hot with alcohol, winey. Probably would be better for breakfast. Needs some grease.

On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach. Board claimed 9.5% ABV.

Growler provided by yourefragile. Thanks man. Poured into a Bruery sniftery tulip.

A - Just short of jet black with nice light brown head. The sticky head lasts through the entire glass.

S - Light roasted malt along with a ton of freshly ground coffee beans.

T - The taste follows the smell. Tons of coffee up front, in the middle, and finish. Slightly lingering roastiness.

M - Great carbonation even from a growler. Medium mouthfeel. Could have used a bit more body to go along with the large amounts of coffee that is in this one.

O - A really solid coffee beer. Glad I was able to try this one. High drinkability.

Poured from a growler shared by tlay10 and enjoyed over the course of the day inside several different glasses.

Looks the brown of dark chocolate, though it’s thin enough for some amber and cherry highlights to come through. The fuzzy head of dark tan fizzles away to nothing but a thin, lingering ring.

In the nose: espresso, heavily toasted bread, crumbled dark chocolate and hints of oatmeal.

The flavor leads with smoothly blended coffee, some oatmeal, cocoa nibs and a subtle smokiness. A subtle tang hangs in the back. More oatmeal and touches of vanilla emerge as it warms. Sweet, with a nice clean finish.

Medium carbonation gently pokes the tongue amidst the somewhat thin, medium light body. The writing on the cap says this is 9.5 percent, which, if true, makes this a very dangerous beer indeed. No alcohol detected by my sensors.

Bacon & Eggs is the perfect breakfast beer, and revealed itself to be a pretty good lunch beer as well. Smoothly blended with a dangerously hidden alcohol content and a depth of flavor that keeps you going back for more. Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey.

On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach for their first anniversary. Tulip.

A: Dark brown with some crimson highlights and a big off white head with scattered lacing.

S: Lots of coffee, with notes of vanilla and oatmeal. Pretty powerful coffee profile. Roasted malt is at an upper moderate level. Light chocolate and faint smoke.

T: Coffee is a bit more restrained here, though by no means subtle. Dark chocolate shines through and it accompanies a firm roasted malt presence. I detect a little vanilla and oatmeal. Alcohol is subtle.

M: Upper medium in body with moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is sticky, chewy, and silky.

Overall: A potent coffee imperial porter. Intense and tasty, but half a pint is more than enough for these old bones.

**update**
I've had this a few more times and like it a lot more. I need to update my review.

Chilled growler into a glass. Thanks, Eric.

A: Pours a clear, maroon body with light tan head that vanishes quickly.

S: Bright, roasted, earthy coffee beans and cocoa powder. largadeer recommended this highly, comparing it to Founders Breakfast Stout -- I can see the similarity, although this lacks the rich grainy character that FBS picks up from its oatmeal content.

T: Rich in coffee -- I've been experimenting with various artisanal coffees outside of beer, and I find this has a good pickup of the rich, nutty, berry-like character I appreciate in some of the better beans. The body is also buoyed with cocoa powder and toasted nuts.

M: Solidly medium-bodied. It seems a bit thin, or maybe I'm drinking too many chewy beers lately. I'm impressed that it hides its ABV so well.

O: This was pretty darn drinkable, though I expected a bit more flavor for the ABV (reportedly >8%).

Pours a nearly black opaque with a taupe head. Pizza olives, greasy spoon smoke exhaust, and fresh brewed coffee comprise the nose. Did I just pull on this glass of stout or did I inhale when the mesquite BBQ fire smoke got blown into my face from the shifting breeze? The mouthfeel is thick, wet and slick. Meaty, smoky, coffee flavors. So good. Quite different. I only had so much room in the cooler, so I had to choose the Downtown Johnny Brown 25th Anniversary Cherry Stout for my take home growler. Next time I'm in San Diego, I'll be carting this bad boy home.

Reviewed from notes. This was one 4.5 oz. taster of a flight of four I sampled at PP Carlsbad.

The body on this guy was almost the highlight of the beer. It achieved a great velvety smoothness that allowed the flavors to lay lightly on the palette.

I got a lot of roasted, nutty, cocoa nib, and coffee flavor. All combined, it comes across somewhat like smooth creamy iced coffee. Vanilla?

This beer is on the thick side of medium, but not all that hard to drink. Well crafted beer.

I had this beer at the CBC festival in Kopenhagen in may this year. Thanks to Johndoo8! Thanks again for this wonderfull brew. We poured this beer illegal on the festival, but hey what the f***! What a success they had. Poured in the CBC snifter.

I did not take too many notes about this beer so i can not tell much about it. Black and tasty is what is coming up when i think back!

Growler to CBC taster
Enjoyed on 11 May 2012

Thanks for this treat Nolan!

A: Deep mocha brown. 1.5 (medium tan) fingernail head on gentle pour.

S: Loads of dark roasted coffee beans up front followed by chocolate. No much else, but that's okay because this beer tastes really good.

T: Very roasty and robust. Follows smell, but the complexity and depth of this beer are thoroughly enjoyable. Loads of chocolate and coffee. Bitterness is rounded out by a touch of vanilla and soft smokiness. Wicked smooth and very tasty.

M: Full bodied with appropriate carbonation. Smooth, thick, and creamy. Superb!

O: A very fun beer to try and I'd love to enjoy this with some proper bacon and eggs brekkie some time. I'm not sure how a breakfast beer could get much better. Well done!

Thanks to yourefragile for sharing this growler. Beer is brown almost black, a thin tan head of small bubbles, a little lacing, low carbonation.

Aroma is roasty and a little smokey, nice complex aroma, really smells good.

Beer is medium in body, a little sweet, creamy in the mouth, a nice bitter finish and a lot of roast. Beer really comes together well. I don't have much else to say except that I'd have it again on draft.

A-dark brown with a re tint. thin cream head that fades to nothing

S-fresh ground coffee...high quality coffee. really strong and good. has a spice to it.

T-comes in with a very smooth and great taste of coffee. there's almost no bitterness or side tastes to it. this is a very flavorful and quality beer. the taste lasts and forms a very long lasting after-taste. this is such a tasty and good beer. it does have more of a sweetness to it than other coffee porters, which i like.

M-medium carbonation with a crisp finish. surprised at how light it feels

O-do not underestimate this place. this is an awesome beer. one of the most able porters out there. its so crisp and clean. people need to come and get this!

On draft at Pizza Port Carlsbad, brewed at Pizza Port Ocean Beach.

A- Jet black color with a faint tan head on top with a little sticky lacing left on the glass.

S- Chocolate and coffee dominates the nose with a little hop aroma on the back end, but very faint.

T- Coffee roast with a little sweetness. Nice roasty flavor, nothing is out of place or taking over the flavor profile. Really nice finish.

M- Medium bodied that feels surprisingly light going down, doesnt give you a gut bomb at all. Really nice texture.

O- Damn good coffee stout

On-tap at Beachwood II, brewed at Port Ocean Beach,

A: Pours black with a creamy tan head that sticks around. Solid lace.

S: Coffee, FIN.

T: The nose is dominated by coffee, but the flavour is more well rounded. Still a lot of coffee, but secondary notes of dark chocolate, maple bar, and molasses. No roast or burnt flavours.

M: Velvety smooth, soft carbonation, milkshake creamy. Medium to full-bodied.

O: This is a fantastic porter that has a complex mix of flavours which are all tasty and in balance. A very nice effort from Port.

Enjoyed at pizza Port – Ocean Beach on draft.

A: dark brown with a tan head, that leaves just a ring around the glass.
S: huge coffee aromas, the first thing I noticed. Nice aromas of bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt. Has a hint of sweetness.
T: nice coffee flavors mixed with roasted malt. Nice chocolate notes and some fruity flavors as well. There is a bit of sweetness, but after the swallow some bitterness creeps in.
M: medium – thin with good carb. Small bubbles you can feel throughout the swallow.
O: this is a good coffee Porter. Not the best I've had, but solid.
