On tap at Churchkey, getting some English dark mild ticks in today apparently. Beer is copper and clear with almost no head, no retention, no lacing, low carbonation.

This beer also has no aroma.

Beer is light in body and watery on the palate, it is mildly sweet and has a nice finish. This is a craft light beer. Probably not a repeat.

On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach a couple weeks back. Was going to have a Pliny but I saw this one (and a few others) medaled at GABF recently so I figured I better drink something actually brewed there.

Medium brown color with a nice layer of tan foam. Nutty aroma was nice and inviting, yet clean. I thought the taste was excellent. Lots of coffee notes, lightly dry, and not too sweet with a nutty balance. It seemed very drinkable and mild, and I can see why it's listed as a Dark Mild here although it said Brown Ale on the menu. Smooth with a medium body and appropriate carbonation.

Overall I was very pleased with this selection. A true session beer, and an excellent Brown Ale considering it's not a real favorite style of mine. Recommended.

Salty and metallic taste. The faint mustache of a head English style. The best feature is a mellow, creamy mouthfeel. The club soda flavor seems to overwhelm whatever roast flavors might be here. Slight touch of malt with a hint of hops. Brown, plain brown, in the pint glass. I'm not finding much to like, even in this low-alcohol style.

Gold Medal at 2011 GABF? I would love to have tried the competitors in this category.

On-tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach

A: The pour is almost brown, perhaps dark amber, with a nice khaki head on it.

S: Sweet and bready malts lead the way with a nice toasted malt aroma. There's a hint of nuttiness and sweet milk chocolate. Though it is sweet, there is only a subtle toffee and caramel aroma.

T: Heavy on the toasted malts with a slight nuttiness. Sweet toffee undertones as well as a little bit of caramel. Lots of bread flavor with a mild roast flavor.

M: Medium in body with a smooth, medium carbonation.

O: Was expecting more of an English brown ale, but was pleasantly surprised to get a mild. Nice smooth flavors that are pleasant and easy to enjoy.

Had on tap at Triple Rock in Berkeley.

Pours a dark reddish brown with plenty of translucency and a lot of color on the edges. Frothy two-finger head was off-white, dissipated quickly, and left below average lace.

Nose was laid back and subtle, with light toasted malt, caramel, and sweet syrup coming out the most. A bit of coffeeish character was apparent along with some graininess.

Taste followed and was similarly subtle and smooth. Sweet caramel and light fruit went well with the roasted malt, bringing out the coffee. Bready, biscuity body is pleasant and easy to down.

Mouthfeel was crisp and smooth, with a bit of stickiness at the ends from the malts. Roasty bitterness is advantageous here and the aftertaste was almost non-existent in a good way. Drinkability was great, and I had trouble pacing myself with this - each sip goes down without any fuss while being satisfying each time.

On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach. My girlfriend's dad's friend told her this beer was bad. I was incredulous, so I drove over to try it for myself.

A: Reddish amber with a generous frothy white head. Good retention and scattered lacing. Appearance is vibrant and clarity is good.

S: Decidedly English in character, with expressive malt notes redolent of lightly toasted bread. Caramel is faint, and there's a firm nuttiness as well as a toffee note.

T: Nutty, with toasted malt notes and a little caramel. It's well balanced, with a dash of chocolate. Bitterness is very low and hops provide no flavor. Not at all estery, just malty and slightly sweet.

M: Upper light body, moderate carbonation, smooth and silky mouthfeel.

Overall: A nice mild with just a little sweetness. This is quite good. This probably blows away most milds you would find in England.
