On-tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach

A: The beer pours a dark brown color with some reddish highlights and an off-white head.

S: An interesting nose which is full of fruit notes. Prunes, raisins, plums, and black cherries about sums it up. Of course, some caramel and brown sugar with a mild vanilla note. There is just a hint of booze.

T: Though it was subtle on the aroma, the flavor has a very harsh booze flavor. Luckily there are still lots of dark fruits like raisins, plums, and black cherries. Caramel, brown sugar, and toffee sweetness are there, as is a bit of toast.

M: The body is medium to full with a medium carbonation.

O: Smelled good and had some okay flavors, but the abrasive alcohol flavor was too much for me.

On tap at Pizza Port Solana Beach. Tulip.

A: Reddish brown and opaque, with a finger of tan foam.

S: Peat notes accompany sweet caramel and toffee. I get a little smoke and earth. There's a pleasant red apple note with a dark fruit presence that reminds me of plum. Brown sugar is present as well.

T: Rich brown sugar and caramel with lesser notes of toffee. You can tell this beer is strong from the warmth on the palate, but there is little alcohol in the flavor. Earth accompanies a light peatiness. I get a little plum and nuttiness. Finishes rich, with lingering earth, brown sugar, and caramel.

M: Upper medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A well made and enjoyable Scotch Ale from Port OB.

On-tap at Ocean Beach Pizza Port. Notes from San Diego trip.

A- Very dark brown body into a smaller glass. Small nut shell brown head. Creamy ring with a silky texture and a cloud atop the beer. No lace.

S- Fruity with ripe red apple and cherry notes. Some toast malt and caramel hints. Almost tart fruit.

T- Good ripe red apple again as well as cherry and raisin dark fruit. More brown sugar, caramel, nutty and toasted malt than the aroma. Slight medicinal and alcohol.

MF- Low carbonation in a silky and creamy body. Hot from alcohol.

Very unique ripe red fruit flavor. A BIG beer.

Served in a nine-ounce shaker pint. Apparently this one is the winner of a homebrew contest that Pizza Port OB decided to brew on its system.

Burnt dark copper in color, the brew’s fairly clear but dark, with amber highlights. The hal-ffinger of khaki head is frothy and sticky with random large bubbles.

Aromas range from crumbled chocolate, candy corn and toffee to vanilla, oats and something like maple syrup. It’s very sweet, but also very rich and very good.

It would surprise me to find rye in a scotch ale, but that’s what I’m getting, along with molasses and toffee. After the swallow, more caramel and toffee is met with a healthy pour of alcohol. Toasted bread and coffee linger into the finish.

Moderate carbonation massages the tongue in a big, creamy medium body that breaks into mild fizz as it moves. Alcohol fumes abound, flaming the nose and supplemented by heat in the throat. If the alcohol were toned down a notch or two, it would be more complementary and less distracting.

If I had one more Just One More, I might pass out. It’s not bad, but you can tell it's a homebrew recipe — the booze is just out of control.
