On-tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad
The pour is dark brown in color with a khaki head. Nose is heavy on the chocolate and roasted malt with mostly a pine hop character, maybe a little bit herbal. The flavor is fairly bitter, but again, mostly just pine and herbal hop notes, and they are not at the forefront. Definitely a malt forward beer with some bready sweetness and the roast and dark chocolate notes coming through more than anything else. Not the way I prefer my Black IPAs.

On tap at PP OB. Snifter. Brewed a Pizza Port San Clemente.
A: Very dark reddish brown with an ephemeral off-white head that leaves scattered lacing.
S: Mellow blend of pine, floral notes, grapefruit, orange, and tangerine. There's a very light roasted character accompanying earth and a whisper of chocolate.
T: Moderately bitter and quite dry. Piney and herbal with orange pith and grapefruit rind. Mildly astringent with a restrained roasted presence and a touch of chocolate.
M: Medium body with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is somewhat thin and watery.
Overall: A pretty good Black IPA. Aside from than the mouthfeel I enjoyed this.

Good Bye Blue Sky (Pizza Port San Clemente)
Black IPA - 6.3%ABV
Pizza Port Carlsbad – 05/03/112
A: Pour is pretty dark with a damn near black center that thins out to a brown towards the edge of the glass. Thin cap of surprisingly white head that settles into a swirl. Has some nice runners of lace that cling down the glass.
S: Smells of really fresh hops. Fruity and abundant with citrus – orange and tangerines. No real roast character in the aroma. No sweetness or alcohol present. Just hoppy really.
T: Taste opens with a nice citrus fruit note, following the nose. Again more orange and tangerine like. There is a defined roast coffee note present and a touch of smokiness in the finish. Moderate level of bitterness. No real alcohol notes. A nice Black IPA. Not quite the counterpart to OB’s Tarantula though.
M: Light to medium in body with a nice smooth creamy texture. Sticky slick and oily hops coat the mouth. Real dry finish on it to the point of being a little acrid.
D: This is a nice Black IPA with some pronounced hop character. Fruity, light, with a notes of coffee and a touch of char.
I prefer OB’s Tarantula to this but very drinkable none the less
