A friend and I stopped by Pizza Port in Solana Beach for lunch on a Saturday in August while visiting San Diego. After reading about Tomme Arthur winning Small Brewer of the Year at the GABF, I had to try some of his brews!

The place is quite laid-back. The seating is all picnic tables lined up end to end, so you get to make new friends whether you want to or not. The decor is surf boards and video games. The place is definitely a hang-out for the younger generation: I doubt many there were over 40. Most seemed in their early 20s.

It was quite crowded at lunch, but we ordered our pizza after waiting in line for just a minute or two. I then headed to the right to order some beer. A four-beer sampler tray is $3.50. The best one I had was their Double IPA, Hop 15. But I'm a hophead so YMMV. Brown Bag Malt Liquor was also good and really smooth and creamy. It beat the hell out of OE and King Cobra. I think they had about 10 house brews on tap and about six guest beers, which were all good California craft brews.

We had one of those California pizzas with stuff you wouldn't normally put on pizza: black beans, peppers, onions, etc. It was quite good. A small was enough for two hungry guys. Although my buddy Chris did have a Caesar salad. I just stuck with pizza and beer.

I would recommend this place highly. Check it out when in San Diego. Also, my fellow BA xlperro points out that you can take the Amtrak Coaster north from San Diego and get off right across 101 from Pizza Port. It doesn't get much better than that.

I had an idea to what to expect at the Solana Beach chapter after visits to San Clemente and Carlsbad; a hangout with surf and skate brands stickered around the shop, good pizza, and good beer. Relatively small compared to the other locations, but on an early Tuesday that didn't matter much.

Food and beer are ordered at separate parts of the restaurant, though counter service at both stations are quick and very friendly. Pizzas, salads, and snacks make much of the menu, with single slices of pizza available during the lunch hour. Completing the pair is the bar, which was pouring 9 house beers (including a fresh hop pale ale, oatmeal stout, Belgian IPA) and an additional dozen guest beers (Lightning, Ninkasi, Mayan Judgement Day). I opted for two house beers, both delicious and absolutely worth reordering on their own. The beers are inexpensive to booth, going from $4.50-$5 a pint.

Between quality and pricing, Pizza Port holds an edge which is worth taking advantage.

Pizza Port is a good place to get a fresh draft and pizza in Solana Beach. On tap is a good selection of house beers. Average prices of about $5/pint as of December 2012. Wine and beer is served in a plain glass at about 55 degrees (my guess). The pizza was good, the music classic rock and the service good (behind the bar only). Cashier short-changed my wife by a dollar.

Typical beach casual restaurant ambiance. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and tables. About 25 well-behaved patrons were there on pre-Christmas weekend afternoon.

Plenty of street parking is available in the neighborhood. It's easy to get there off Coast Highway, across from the Amtrak station, and to find with GPS.

Brought the kids in for lunch at Pizza Port as there was a little playground right down the street by the beach. Worked out great. We strolled in right as they were opening, first people in. As such we may have caught the staff unprepared. The first two people we spoke with were behind the registers and were unwelcoming and acted as if it was an inconvenience we were there. Turn-off. However, as the bartender showed up and the cashier came over they were very helpful and pleasant, though I have to rate as 3.0 due to the initial impression. Bartender went out of his way to help a foreigner from Colorado ;) Ordered a pizza while the kids ran around the open area with long benches. Cool vibe. Brewery right behind the counter. Guy was taking a hydrometer sample while we sat, pretty cool. Plates, silverware, and boxes along the wall, very do-it-yourself. The other guy behind the bar hooked up a free One Down Brown as he was obviously hung over and poured the wrong beer. Kind of him. Overall, if I lived near by I'd be here all the time. The kids destroyed the pizza, which was pretty good. Enjoyable. Great beer.
