Was very eager to check this place out. Really nice spot 1-2 blocks from the beach. The atmosphere is fairly cool with picnic tables on the inside and some outside seating. The place is quite small and very cramped. It's more than easy to spill your beer while trying to return to your table. The picnic table idea is a nice one but it doesn't really suit for those people who want to have a pint or two in peace. You'll more than likely have to share your table with a few other people.

The pizza, well, it's incredible. Probably the best pizza I've tasted and it's with very reasonable prices. The service lacks, basically only because you order your pizza, pick up your pint, and then go pick up your pizza when it's ready. So it's not really a knock on their service.

Their selection of beer is quite good. Guest taps ranging from Russian River to Ballast Point in addition to their own house tap list carrying their Ghost Ride the Wit and Dawn Patrol (which was served on cask)

Surely will check this place out again when I'm down in the area. Can't really go wrong with it!

I am a big fan of the pizza ports not only for there great beer, which I find to usually be tastier than their guest beers, but also for their incredible pizza. Good pizza seems to be a rarity down in southern california, but this place makes a veggie pie like none-other. There selection is smaller than in Carlsbad, but they do seem to have cask ales on a lot. The last time I went they had two, and they were both really fantastic and fresh. The service is always dependable and I've never had to wait long for a beer or a pizza, and both have always been quality. The atmosphere is little bothersome, though. It's smaller than the Carlsbad pizza port and feels more cramped. The televisions can be right in your face, and the games that tend to have children running around them are very close to one of the long tables, which can make enjoying your beer a little frustrating. Other than that, the solana beach pizza port lends a consistently enjoyable experience that I will miss dearly when I move next month.

This place is pretty cool. The Solana Beach area is very nice and the atmosphere is really laid back. The seating inside consists of picnic tables w/ a few TV's on the walls and arcade games in the back. The brewing equipment is next to the kitchen. You wouldn't expect this place to brew beer at first glance. It doesn't have the traditional look or feel, but that's a great change.

I didn't try the pizza, but I've heard it's really good. Some of their pies looked great.

The staff was young & attentive. The brewer was walking around and seemed nice, he was talking to some locals. I really appreciated a sample of RR's Pliny the Elder, which was served at the right temperature and was one of the greatest Double IPA's I've ever tried.

The selection is very good. About 6-8 of their own beers on tap as well as about 10 guest taps. I had a hard time deciding between so many great brews like Hop Rod Rye & Red Rocket or their beers, but I was in their own brewpub and decided to have their Pale Ale. I really want to spend more time along the Southern California coast and this would be a place I would return to a few times a week.

I have to say i Love Pizza Port. The atmosphere is very California beach culture. Long benches to sit on, surfing on TV, boards on the wall, video games in the back. it is family friendly too. Lots of families there enjoying the food.

The beer though is the reason to come here. Port Brewing makes some of the best around. They usally have about ten or so of their own rotating offerings as well as 5-10 other California Brews, like Bear Republic, Russian River, Stone. The beers Port makes are all fantastic. They really make beers true to style. The Seaside stout tastes like Guiness does in Ireland, the Hefe tastes like a true Bavarian hefe. They truly do outstanding work here.

Foodwise the pizza is not horrible, not particularly good either. I come for the beer which is decently priced.

If you are in the area and a beer lover, you have to check this place out. I love to go often to try the different seasonals they produce.

Just hit this place for the first time on Saturday with the wife and friends.

Atmosphere- I really like the Solana Beach area. Very cool atmosphere that is somewhere between the cultures of ritzy La Jolla/Del Mar and the classic surf culture feel of PB/OB. Tough place to park, but we parked right at the front door (I was constantly looking outside to make sure I didn't get a ticket). Very laid-back atmosphere; order your food, grab a seat at the picnic-style benches, cozy up with your neighbors (very crowded locale).

Quality- Very nice quality of food and drink, especially given somewhat lowered standards due to the atmosphere. A whole host of great beers on tap, very nice for a casual night out.

Service- Staff seemed pleasant and prompt. A distinct hippie/surf style to many workers which fits the scene.

Selection- Started off with a PP CA Honey Ale pitcher my friend had bought, which was a decent start. Went next to a RR Pliny the Elder, followed by a pitcher of PP Shark Attack Triple Red which was quite tasty. Noticed a wide range of national and local microbrews on tap, including several Stone, Alesmith, and Green Flash varieties.

Food- Everyone split a Large Pepperoni/Hawaiin Pizza which was so good that we got a Sausage pizza. Very fresh ingredients and not too saucy or oily. Can't vouch for any other food, but the pizza is very good.

We had a blast at Pizza Port, highly recommended. Will return in the near future, possibly on a less hectic night so that we can have more space and time to enjoy the experience.

I was at this place and at Carlsblad. This is clearly smaller, 5 minutes from the Solena Beach hotels where I was staying, and right at the ocean. There is less beer taps, it's a scale down from Carlsblad. I had to stand. But what a great time I had - it was one of the best "beach" party places I have been to, and I have been down here since grad school 30 years back. Lou was tending bar, he was pouring beer every minute and said he was at 25% capacity on a Tuesday night. So he had a lot of time, was an athlete of a bartender, and he brought out for me extra pints including a 2003 Cuvee de Tomee that was one of the best beverages ever. His knowledge of the operation was excellent-his passion for beer impressive- he is an up-and-comer and I got after going to an after-hours (after 10 in California) bar with some of the crowd, after 1 am (4 am on our time). There is different bottles to sell here, different brews on tap. I am glad that I stayed up here, took the coaster around, instead of staying like a typical tourist downtown.
I can see why this place is copied but never equalled.

To start with , it looks like a run down store front. The atmosphere is exceptional laid back, bench seats out front, arcade games, and soveniers hanging on the wall. Quality is what you expect from Pizza Port. Service was average, for you had to go to the counter to order, then wait there. Selection was small when I was there, they had like ran out of six beers minutes before I walked in. Food did not have any here. Value was inexpensive. It is a nice little joint. You can see the brewery almost as you enter. There even is a plank to cross to get to it. Brewer was sitting in bench having a pint. Talking with patrons. Nice. highly recommend if in the area. Train from LAX stops in front of the place

After the big letdown that was my visit to Stone (closed, we couldn’t even drive up to the plant and take a picture), my girlfriend was itching for some beach action. We drove around Solana Beach and couldn’t find a hotel (we totally missed the holiday inn, lord knows how) so we settled in the adjacent town of Del Mar. We were feeling limber, so after a stroll on the lovely seashore, the pints I had knocked back in Carlsbad were already halfway between my liver and bladder, so we walked the 2-3 miles over to the other Pizza Port to refuel. Too bad, we missed the farmer’s market by mere minutes.

Even more of a beat up beach cabin look than the other locale, it looked more like a fast-food teenager hangout than a brewpub. Scratched-up picnic tables, old-school arcade games and a few TVs were showing both baseball and football, much to my lover’s chagrin. Fortunately for her, the seating section inside was completely full of college kids and young families with screaming children, so we sat outside. No problem, it was warm and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. A calendar of events was printed out in colored paper, some cool activities were lined up such as group trips to see the Chargers, with plenty of grog and grub included. Apparently their festivals are not to be missed as well.

The line for Beer was shorter than the one for food, so I decided to get some pints first. Two affable dudes were manning the dozen taps, and worked diligently but in a very leisurely fashion, taking time to chat a little with everyone in front of the procession. After a few Beer runs, they gave me a freebie and called me a cab, so big props to them. The selection wasn’t as extensive as I expected, but still had a few really interesting Beers, including a Belgian style and a fresh hop ale. Quality was top-notch, this chain of pubs really lives up to the hype.

I eventually accepted the fact that the pizza line wasn’t going to shorten any time soon, so I sucked it up and got in it. Thankfully, it went pretty fast, since people just order, pay and go. When asked for a name I used my girlfriend’s moniker of “Minou” (pronounce Mee-New, it means kitty), as I warned her about how they call up your name when your order is ready and she said she would be embarrassed to hear hers belted out on the PA system. I must have said it too fast, on the bill it said “Mimou”, which turned into a running gag between me and her for the rest of the trip. Loosely translated, it means “semi-soft”, which was what I getting around the stomach area after all the junk food I packed in since we got to the States.

The pizza was excellent, we went with the Roma with whole grain Beer crust. I’m not in a position to pronounce it the preeminent brewpub pie, American Flatbread in Vermont still holds the belt on this one for me personally, but it came pretty close, so as a consolation I’ll bestow upon it the title of “best in the west”. We were looking forward to splitting a Beer float for dessert, but their fridges were broken down so better luck next time.

As far as overall experience goes, I thought Carlsbad was a bit better on that given day, but I’m sure it must vary wildly depending on what’s on tap at each particular location. Both are highly recommended in my book.

A- this location sits right on the Pacific Coast Highway. Parking sucks, considered yourself warned. When you first walk up, this place looks pretty cool, i like the front patio seating, then you walk in and its like two really long rows of pinic tables. Pretty crowded whether or not there's people there or not. Just not much room. Even after all that, it still feels like a place that you could have a great time at.

Q- i remeber the portzels bing bigger, but at only a dollar i cant complain. The pizza is always awesome, i cant get enough of the stuff. No beer on this trip, but i have had plenty of their beer before, and its good.

S- ever notice that some places just hire people that are interesting and fun? Pizza Port seems to be one of them. Seems like the management doesnt ride the employees hard and lets em have some fun. Love to see that, makes me wanna return.

S- some guest taps, but majorly house taps. All in all i believe there was around 11 give or take a few.

F- again, food is awesome, maybe one day i'll beak my portzel and small cheese pizza addiction and try something else.

Sought this place out on a recent trip to San Diego. I had expected it to be a Rock Bottom or BJ's kind of brewpub. Wrong! This is a truly unique establishment that I would characterize as California beach town grundge. We were there on July 28 when it was 95 degrees at the beach and walked in to find that the place was not air conditioned. When you walk in, you have to order your food at the counter on the left and the beer just beyond. The place is set up with picnic tables to the right and video games in the back of the room. Lots of kids running around. The pizza was way too doughy - like eating a loaf of bread with your pizza - still haven't had a decent pie west of the Hudson. The beers, however, were terrific - I had a Hefe and an IPA to wash down all that dough. The bald guy pouring the beer was especially helpful and gave me a few samples to compare different styles. In the end, it's all about the beer. Try to transcend the crappy pizza and the surroundings. Close your eyes and sip the beer!

Our first stop in SD after a long ride from the mountains, this place is just a terrific BA stop. Casual, fun athmosphere, outstanding house brews and guest brews, mostly other SD area micros, tasty salad to start and outstanding pizza to finish, friendly folks enjoying life all around us, LOU P.LIN2x IPA, wow, what outstanding stuff! ...Yeah it was crowded, but the salad and beer held us over till the pizza was ready, and we were able to squeeze into a few seats... Go, relax and enjoy an outstanding brew destination, they even had the METS game on!

Its hard to give a fair score to the atmosphere of this place but I have to say that it is unimpressive. Doesnt look like anything special as you're driving by and in fact it is easy to miss. It does have outdoor seating and pinball and other video games which I enjoy so that counts for something. Seems like a pretty nice town also.

You walk in and u have steel counters all around. Off to the left is where you order pizza when it gets busy but I am one of the first customers so I proceed directly to the brewing area. They had so many fine beers on, I wanted to try all of em. Unfortunately, I only got to try 3. They were all great. I had the honey ale, session pale ale and an amber I beleive. It shoud also be noted that they had about 12- 15 different beers of their own plus another 8 or so guest beers. Very cool. They also added 2 new beers to the draft list while I was there. I didnt see them taking any out of rotation . The beers are pretty cheap too. They also have happy hour I think.

I got the bbq cheeseburger pizza which was excellent. Service got friendlier after I tipped them which is fine. This place doesnt seem to be set up for a lot of tipping but the people still appreciated it. I would love to go back to this place tomorrow. This place is classic !!

Late May 2006-

Went here after a trip to the San Diego Zoo. Nice atmosphere...crowded as hell, but nice. Crowded even mid week. Lots of picnic style tables set up full with people. Video games in back for the kids. Very loud, so be prepared. The quality of both the food and the beer is great. The pizza was some of the best I have ever had. Their salads very good as well. And, their beer speaks for themselves. You order at the counter seperatly for the beer and the food. The pizza lady was nice and even let me borrow a pen and paper for reviews. The beer guy seemed a bit gruff (looked alot like Bam Magera from Jackass). But, when I got two sampler platters he gave me a free one on each tray. Good prices for both food and beer. They had about 10 of their beers on tap and another 6 or so guest taps including one from Russian River...nice! All in all a place I would go back to in a second.

By far my favorite Brewpub in Southern California. Pizza Port Solana Beach never ceases to make my mouth happy and my belly full.

Pizza Port - Solana Beach is the original location for the Pizza Port Franchise. The brewer has been there since I have been going and makes some pretty exceptional beers. My favorites being the Shark Bitten Double Red, Cuvee De Tomme, Santa's Little Helper Imperial and the Lou P. Lin.

I always order a veggie pizza of some kind with the wheat crust. It is totally and completely worth the trip to this brewpub just for the food. The pizza is actually pretty good and better than some of the other places you can go to for specialty pizza.

The atmosphere is great, especially on a Saturday when all the local cyclists stop in for a beer and pizza at the end of their ride. It is set up family style and you end up sharing rather large tables with strangers. Makes it great to meet other people who know good beer.

If I lived closer, I would spend more time than I should hanging out at the Port.

Went to this Pizza Port location at the end of a long weekend. A great place to wind down and have a few beers and pizzas while reflecting on an amazing weekend. Pizza was awesome - had the Roma and the Carlsbad. Pesto, sundried tomatoes, chicken, feta cheese....delicious. The beer was top notch too. I had the Cowabunga cream stout and doc morgan's XPA both were very fresh and tasty.

One of the busier local hangouts. Hard to find a table at peak hours. But once we sat down, we didn't get up for a few hours. Definitely recommended.

Pizza Port is a hard place to rate. It is almost unfair to rate several of the categories. First, it is not a fancy place. It is a pizza parlor, after all. The brewery is small so there are a small number of PP beers on tap at any time, but there were also about 10 guest taps with CA micros, including Pliny the Elder. I had a bottle of their SPF 45 Saison, which was excellent and a pint of the Trippel Overhead Golden Ale.

The unfairness comes in the category of service since this is a self-service pizza and beer parlor, the only real service is handing you the food and pouring a beer. The beerman was friendly knew what I would like after a couple questions and was generally friendly. We were there for a mid-week lunch so it wasn't busy.

The food was excellent. Pizzas and salads were the only thing on the menu but the pizzas were huge, had all kinds of toppings available, and had an excellent thick crust, obviously freshly made.

I would definitely recommend Pizza Port and will returning next year when I visit San Diego again.

1st trip to the San Diego area so I made the Pizza Port pilgramage on a Friday night.

Atmosphere: Very unique but it worked. There was a crazy mix of surfer dude/young couples & families in the place. A zillion little kids were running around & the place was loud. Seating at the picnic tables was Darwinism at its best with a move your meat lose your seat philosophy but it only took about ten minutes for our group of 5 to scrounge some space.

Quality: As expected the beer was great.

Service: The cafeteria style line to order beers was a first for me but the lines moved and the bartenders did not mind me getting four growlers (just two for my carry on home and the rest for my crew) to go over a period of two trips in line.

Selection: PP taps plus a few sweet guest taps like Pliny the Elder were available. I was hoping a Double IPA was on but I was happy with my Swami's and Pale along with trying pretty much everything else from the PP taps from our group.

Food: The Pizza was excellent but realize that there is not much to order besides the Pizza.

Value: Very reasonable. Since I am East Coast, $13 for a new filled growler is not bad.

Worth the trip for sure & the train is right across the street.

A great place to hang out and try the house brews. You can grab a pint or a pitcher. Take a seat outside along the PCH and check out all the cute surfer chicks with their dogs. It's also right around the corner from the world famous Belly Up Tavern music venue.

The pizza at Pizza Port is great! The beer selection is even more awesome! The Shark Bite Red and the California Honey Ale are a couple of my favorites. One of my favorite places to grab some good beer and pizza - especially when I'm on my way over to the Belly Up for some live music.

As a long time Pizza Port customer, this one is not nearly as nice to visit as the Carlsbad location. It's not really their fault, but it's just too crowded all the time. I guess that's what happens when you offer great beer at great prices! The people in Carlsbad seem friendlier too (customers and staff). The house made beers are usually great although I've always thought their house IPA was really bad (especially by San Diego standards), and don't understand the raves it gets. On the other hand, when they have their Frank Double IPA available, it's awesome and definitely recommended.

Definitely worth checking out, but if you can, make it up the coast a bit to the Carlsbad Pizza Port. Better atmosphere for sure. Also, what's up with Pizza Port's growler prices? $11 for refills is $2 or $3 more than anyone else charges including Ballast Point, which is my favorite brewery in San Diego.

Atmosphere – The epitome of west coast. Big picnic tables, video games, surf boards and paper plates. An eclectic mix of music, man I wish there was a place like this near me.

Quality – When the brewer is sitting the next table over and gets up to stir the mash tun you know the beer is fresh. Everything I had was fresh and delicious.

Service – Slightly sarcastic, but a bit slow, or laid back as some might say.

Selection – Great selection of house brews with a surprisingly solid selection of rare local micros. I like a brew pub that isn’t afraid to put their beers up against the area has to offer. They also had bottles of SPF 45 for sale, I haven’t cracked mine open yet.

Great place, I envy the friend I was visiting because he lives within easy walking distance. I hit it twice during my four day stay, and I’m mad at myself now for not working in a third trip.

Pizza Port Solana Beach is conveniently located on Highway 101, not far from I-5, and across from a commuter train station. There is on-street parking and a free parking lot a couple of doors down from the brewpub.

The inside of the brewpub is similar to the Carlsbad location with ~18 picnic tables for seating (and a few more tables outside on the sidewalk in front). The front of the pub has large windows looking out onto the street. There are some TVs, and there was music playing (CDs?). There are a few arcade video games in the rear of the pub. You order your food and drinks at the counter and bar (no seating at the bar). There is a surfing motif, but not as predominant as at the Carlsbad location. There is one steel brewing kettle visible next to the bar area, but most off the brewing equipment seems to be downstairs.

On my visit they had 10 of their house brews on-tap as well as 10 guest beers, which included Russian River ESB and some Stone beers. A very good selection. Pints were $3.75-$4.00, and samples (3-4 oz) were $3.50 for four. Pitchers were also available. Growlers, 750 mL's, and t-shirts were for sale at the front of the pub.

The service was good and friendly. I visited on a Thursday afternoon, and saw the brewer Tomme Arthur there (who apparently bartends on Thursday evenings). As you might surmise from the name of the pub, Pizza is a large part of the food offerings, and the pizza is very good. There are a lot of interesting pizzas to choose from. Great food, great beer, comfortable atmosphere -- what more could you ask?

A little Pearl Jam on the juke, young folks, old folks, surfer dudes and dudettes cramming pizza in their faces and sloshing around pitchers of great beer... yeah, this has got a pretty hoppin' atmosphere, even on a Monday night. This place is definitely for groups or couples, though, as I came here a single business traveler looking to sit at a barstool and chat it up. There aren't really any bar stools, just a bunch of tables filled to the max. That's OK, though, because I really just came ot get some limited edition bottles, of which they had a few. I also had a chance to try a few pints after scoring a big table all to myeslf out front.
Nice selection of house beers and guest brews, all with a REALLY attractive price tag. Eg. Pint of the night: Alpine Ale... $2 per pint. Wow

Didn't get to try the food. Looked decent enough, though.

I think next time I'd either really like to try the other locations to see if they are any more conducive to the single business traveler, or hit this place with the SD BA's.

Stopped in for a beer and to check out their bottle selection on the way home. Had about 8 PP offerings on tap, 2 on cask, and another 8 or so guest taps. This is the smallest of the Pizza Port locations - one long room with long picnic style tables. Video games in the back, and a good jukebox. There is also a small patio area out front. This place was pretty crowded, but that should be expected on a Saturday night. Service was good - I ordered from the bar but despite the crowd he was corteous and answered my beer questions. Beer was, as usual, fantastic. Definitely worth stopping in - it is interesting to see where Pizza Port started - but given the choice I would hang out at one of the newer locations.

My girlfriend brought me here on my birthday and it sure hit the spot. this is the kind of place that you wish every pizza bar was like. Great selection of beer, both house brand and local micro brews, good food, and a friendly atmosphere combine to make this place one of my favorites. i had the veggie pizza, which was loaded with garlic and pretty hearty for a veggie pie. the house brewed SPF 8 was a dark, smoky belgian with a hint of tartness. it was very good, but we had a hard time finishing that pitcher.
the coaster tracks are right across the street in case you don't feel like driving.

Mike, the GM at Solana Beach, could not have been more cordial or knowledgeable. True, he was wearing a Sox hat, but he was utterly without arrogance despite having one of the ultimate pizza and beer spots in the universe. Full disclosure: I might love pizza even more than I love beer, so this place is heaven on earth. Bought the Frank's Double IPA and Mo Betta Bretta to bring home; drank many including Wipeout IPA, Sharkbite,High Tide IPA( on cask and on tap)Dawn Patrol Dark, Switchstance 2002: this is the place for some serious enjoyment, all of this right on the beach.
