Thanks to BobSacamano12 for this bottle, I've been on a mission to drink these Voodoo beers, since they've been almost uniformly fantastic; plus, I have an unhealthy love of a good port...I'd like to return to Portugal for more sampling. 22 oz. red-waxed bottle, #067, dated 9/20/13.

Pour is a very light but very opaque orange with minimal carbonation. The nose is light, more alcohol-soaked pears than anything...& no, I've never soaked pears in alcohol. Yet.

Gran Met - Port Barrel Aged is a big step down from the rest of Voodoo's Barrel Room stuff. The underlying tripel is nice: sweet, slightly yeasty, with that pear note from the nose coming through again. The barrel is a rumor of a long-vanished ghost: a touch of wood, nothing else. As in the other Gran Met beer, the alcohol comes by with a 2x4, especially once the beer begins to warm. A little big, bruising, low-carb & simple to do more than sip slowly.

After the amazingness of the Apple Brandy Gran Met, perhaps my hopes were too high, but this beer is too simple, too lacking in the barrel to be more than a pretty good tripel. Ah well. For the other astounding Barrel Room brews, Voodoo, I forgive you for this one.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Pale orange. Small white head. Thin collar.

Smell - Lots of pale malt. Wine aroma. Slightly acidic.

Taste - Fruity. Red wine. Apple. Grainy with pale malt sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Sweet. Too sweet. Boozy.

Overall - This version lets the base beer show more, but it doesn't help. I prefer the overwhelming apple brandy.

Bottle #203 poured into a matching 22oz barrel room collection snifter. The brew pours a clear amber color with a finger of tan that fades down to a thin film across the top with spotty lace sticking to the glass.

The aroma is like apple core with some yeast spiciness that is faintly like clove and crushed black pepper. Some earthen raw oak and vinous tang like strong red wine come out when you really bury your nose in this. It almost has a spicy cinnamon note that comes out more as it warms up along with a hint of cider.

The taste is apple core with apple skins and pear-like fruity quality. Some clove and crushed black pepper spiciness is all across the middle. The barrel provides a bit of must and raw oak that adds another earthen layer and dry spiciness. Across the back are some dirty vinous notes that emerge with more sips. A little touch of oxidation is present that is mildly paper-like and as the brew warms it gets a bit of a cider feel to it.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. It is an interesting and perplexing execution of beer and barrel aging. I think the base works so well with apple brandy barrels but this is quite different. I am not sold on it really being a success but it isnt a failure either. The overall barrel presence is quite faint in comparison to other barrel aged voodoo offerings. Other than a dryness to the base and more earth, this was a subtle nuance mixed with a cider sort of feel that I wasnt crazy about.
