Thank you to the kind folks who enabled me to have a hearty pour of this on Saturday. Its black in color with a lighter brown and fine ruby clarity when held to the light. A dark khaki head rests atop and fades quickly.
The aroma contains a pleasant smoked inclusion that ive never picked up on before in the barrel aged versions. Plenty of roast, chocolate, anise, earth and layers of alcohol character.
The taste is roasty with an earthen char, smoke, chocolate and a bitter sweet finish. Some anise towards the back with leather. Each sip of this beer is seemingly perceived differently on the palate depending on whether you wanna focus on the sweetness, the smoke, the alcohol or the roasty/bitterness.
This is medium to full bodied with a modest to lighter amount of carbonation. Not sure on the alcohol level of this but all things considered, I assume its in the 12% or better realm and really does not drink like its that high. I would tear this beer up regularly if it was possible but unfortunately this was a rare treat. Black magick has always been one of my favorite beers and this was an awesome experience to taste the "naked" version of it. With a base beer this complex and enjoyable, its no wonder the barrel aged versions are coveted so highly.

Really nice smokiness to this that was surprising and delicious! Amazing base stout. Glad I got the chance to try this one. Thanks Curt!
