This is an Imperial Stout that is of great strength and complexity. We then gently age that beer in Elaigh Craig 13 1/2 year old Bourbon Barrels for 6 months to 1 yr. and then primed and bottled to bottle condition for continued aging and celler life. Black Magick should be able to be aged up to about 5 years, to heighten the complexity and smooth nature of this beer.
First Black Magick brewed in Feb 2007. Released 2009. = 15% ABV
Second Black Magick brewed in 2009 and released 2011. = 15.5% ABV

This bottle has gotten very familiar with the darkside of my basement. This particular bottle has the "official" Black Magick label and not the label shown in the picture. I am uncertain of when this was bottled, but must be somewhere in 2008-2009.
A: Poured into a 12 oz Caracole snifter (an odd glass, as it has a man with a snail helmet on) and I couldn't believe how much carbonation there was. The head rose with a great level of ferociousness that made it audible, but it quickly dies down. Carbonation is visible, more active than I would have imagined. The body is the darkest of brown and there is a ring around the top the width of dental floss or Jennifer Lopez's g-string. Unfortunately not a lot of lacing, but @ 15% ABV I do not know what else to expect.
S: Just from opening the cap one would think, yep that is bourbon. The nose is intense and strong like the finest of Kentucky warriors. Except this one bathes in vanilla and uses wooden bars of soap with some bad coffee breath.
T: The taste has a lot more wood to it and get a a sense of the malt used in the beer. It's certainly dry and tastes less sweet than the nose would suggest. The one thing I can say is, I can believe this is 15%. The taste of it is apparent and it's well suited for a nightcap. The alcohol is obviously discernible and makes up the majority of the taste. It's not harsh or astringent though and is dried out with a kiss of mild sweetness. It's still big alcohol though.
M: The carbonation died down quickly on this one. It's pretty silky for it's ABV.
D: This is a really big beer. I actually can't think of a beer other than Utopias that comes close to matching this ABV. An 8 oz. serving of this would be ideal. I like the woodsy nature of this beer, but the alcohol is too big to want more.
Curious to see how the hand labeled bottle I have tastes in comparison to this.

Super black, thin brown head. Aroma was bourbon for sure, but really hot like they dumped some actual bourbon into the beer itself.
Taste actually wasn't hot, good amount of chocolate malt yielding toffee like flavors and barrel goodness. Pretty impressive mouthfeel to hide this amount of heat. Dare I even call this underrated.

Still drinking well, showing some Sherry (oxidized) notes.
