Formerly PILZILLA.

Pilzilla is a beer that I've been brewing for years. Each year it gets bigger and bigger. Nicknamed "The beer that took over Tokyo". It is an unfiltered Keller Bier. Nicley hopped at this point with 6 to 7 different kinds of hops and about 6.25 % ABV Each year we will add another variety of hop and bump the alcohol a bit. This is not your average pilsner, get it before we drink it all! Prost!!

Pours a pale yellow with a huge chunky white head that leaves amazing lacing and completely covers the top for most of the tasting. The smell is crisp and clean with a hop bitterness, bready and doughy malt and a spice and lemon that almost hints of mint. The taste is very spicy upfront with a biscuit malt and a nice hop bitterness. This is my first time with this style and I love it. Obscure, German beers tend to be my favorite. The mint hits the back of the throat after a nice dry finish. The mouthfeel is creamy and thick. There is a lot of body to this beer. Voodoo makes some good beer and I think this is now my favorite from them. I could drink this one all night long and I will be looking for it on tap while I am out.

i wanted to like this, and all of the voodoo beers really, more than i did. i found this a little safe for what they call it, flat, and not even fresh tasting which is a weird observation to be forced to make in this style, just middling execution overall, wondering how it could be rated as highly as it is here on BA, perhaps my experience was not the norm. its hoppy sure, but it seems a bit faded, and its strong seemingly for the heck of it, clearer for a keller type, brassy toned with a short lived white head on it, a lot less carbonation on the palate then in wants. a little dishwater thing in the nose, some pine and green tea bitterness to the hops, but overall this doesnt present as vibrant and robust it presents as sort of incomplete and ageing at the same time, some european grain character which is not that light might be its best feature aromatically, the lager yeast is there too. the flavor has nice hop bitterness but less of the nuance than i was expecting, smells more german to me than anything else, a little oxidation in it, and really lacking in texture, it has body but very little life. i get some metallic sting as this warms, some breadiness from the malt, and a lightly soapy thing. i can see where they were trying to go with this, a fusion of pils types with lots of hops, but the execution just isnt there. the jury is still out for me on voodoo, the quality has been a little shaky in my limited experience...

16oz, older can.

On a hard pour 1 finger of white, slightly fizzy head formed before quickly receding to a thin bubbly covering. Body is strangely hazy for a "pils", or even a zwickl, this is reaching NE levels of haze.

Aroma is light but what us there is a very fruity citrusy hop. Other than that however the aroma is quite crisp.

The flavor brings some nice traditional, crackery lager malt, with some craft beer type hoppage, but the hop flavor isn't overwhelming for a pils type beer.

Feel is drinkable amd crisp, with a medium long finish. The ABV is not noticeable. Very smooth.

Overall this beer comes of as a bit sweet with a couple rough edges, but is incredibly unique and enjoyable.

Look: Pours a very pretty golden yellow color with a two finger, satin white head of dense foam that laces the glass well. Average head retention.

Aroma: Slightly floral and fresh, with light hints of toasted grains/caramel and maybe even some white grape notes way in the background.

Taste: Doughy and sweet. Upfront flavors of sourdough pretzels complemented by hints of confectionary apple strudel, goes slightly floral with some raw notes of unfiltered honey and beeswax. Moderate hop bitterness, not in a resinous or overtly sappy way; more so in a flowery way.

Overall: I liked this a lot. Very enjoyable.

The thick, dense white foam head provides a soft intro to this clear, lightly burnt gold brew.

Yet the flavor profile kicks off with a mild bitterness that accents a touch of golden wheat and corn before exhaling a hint of herbal, savory allium. It keeps coming back to that mildly sweet, bready wheat, making for a slightly sweeter than typical pils, which is amplified by an accent of white grape, but is enjoyable otherwise. It's maybe a little more approachable because of it.

The medium body is slightly round with a firm but delicate carbonation that finishes semi-dry.

This is another brew that, years ago, I thought didn't quite work so well. But again, clearly, they seem to have stuck it out and improved upon KillaPilz, even if it's still only mildly off style. I've deleted and replaced my old review.

Review 1479

After looking back on how many beers I have drunk from this style, I learned that I might need to improve that number. I did receive this beer from a BIF, and a thank you is in order, yet I do not know who to thank. Anyways, thank you, somebody, for giving me this beer. Voodoo Brewing has produced above-average beer. Thus far the beers I have tried were better than the average. I enjoyed the brown ale they created. On with the review, this beer is around 44 degrees and served in a 20-ounce nonic glass. The pour of the beer created a monster two-fingered head with excellent retention. The creamy airy head left bright white lacing on the glass as it dissipated slowly. The lacing left on the glass is standard nothing too extravagant. The color of the beer is SRM 12, a medium amber color with dark straw yellow hues. This beer is clear to brilliant. The overall appearance of the beer is excellent, with high marks.

The initial aromas in the beer are floral, lightly toasted malts and a hint of herbal. Nosing further, I detect cracker, a hint of cook veggies, and a bit of earthiness. Other than the hint of veggies the aromas in the beer are appetizing.

The flavors in the beer are floral, toasted crackers, herbal, cooked corn, a hint of earthiness. minerals akin to limestone, and a touch of pharmaceutical. The beer has this interesting flavor profile that makes me wonder what direction was they were intending.

The mouthfeel of the beer is chalky dry and oily.

The mouthfeel of the beer is medium, low carbonation, and a medium finish.

Overall, I do not care for this beer. I was expecting this crisp refreshing lager that is simple yet complex and refreshing to drink. I did not get any of that on my wish list. This beer tastes off to me. The cook veggies and dry chalky mouthfeel, does make this beer hard to consume. I check the best by date and I am well within that date. By all accounts this a fresh beer. I will not revisit this beer. I do not care for it.

16 ounce can poured into a snulip glass.

L---Slightly hazed, rich golden color. Medium, slightly off-white head. Retention was good. Lacing was very nice.

S---It's both hoppy and malty. Floral hops and bready malts. Nice.

T---Follows the nose. Floral hops, lemon, light honey & doughy bread.

F---Nice carbonation and a medium+ mouthfeel.

O---A very nice beer. I'd get this one again.

L: Very foamy. Transparent golden amber. Looks good.

S: It's Kellerbier alright.

T: Unlike anything I've tasted. The can is huge, the ABV is huge. I don't have the time or inclination to unpack this. I might pour it out.

F: It burns. Not a pleasant experience.

O: Brewed for REAL MEN!

Poured into the tall weizen from the bottle, best by 20191201 on the mix pack box.

A: slight haze, as per style. Thin head goes away quickly into a 1mm collar. light signs of carbonation escaping very slowly.

S: Little bit of the homebrew twang on top of a fairly grassy euro-hop front of nose and back of nose is super light crackery malt.

T: Follows nose, but wow is this HOT on the palate and back of the throat. Goes down hot. Heat lingers. Earthy hops and spicy yeasty cracker notes eventually break past the heat.

M: starts out slick, pretty filling. Dries out pretty quickly, then a sense of wetness is left behind. Hot outbreath lingers at the ultimate finish.

O: This packs a big wallop, and it definitely delivers the goods if you like to have some heat in the imperial range and enjoy a big pilsner-style experience. The hops and yeast stand up to the heat and leave pleasantness all around.

Pours, clear, gold in color with one third inch head. Taste is grass, medicinal grain, and doughy malt. Very light bodied, bitter, with moderate carbonation. A little too bitter and light bodied for the style for me. Have had way better examples of style. Rare miss from the brewery.

Poured a cloudy, yellow-orange body with minimal head and foam/lace patches down the glass. Aroma is grassy and lightly hoppy with a dry hoppiness as well. The beer has a mixed taste of mild, citric hoppiness with an earthy, grassy feel and crisp finish. Not a bad pils but nothing stands out.
